I was going to mention that you were in this thread as well, Fred Barclay! I seem to be about 6 months behind you in my interests in this stuff. Cheers!

Re: Tor anyone?

I found a good thread on the Software and Applications forum dealing with encryption. It seems to have originated several months ago, so is fairly current.

Re: Downloading .iso is forbidden; how to get Mint .iso?

Yeah, not quite enough information to know what your situation is (in some library). I do know that libraries on college campuses with public computer facilities generally have restrictions on access and use of their networks for security reasons. This goes all the way back to Napster network cloggi...

Re: Tor anyone?

I have downloaded and tried out Tails - certainly very secure in that it is non-persistent by default. I've run it mainly out of curiosity, its main drawback being the slowness inherent in a live USB based system. If I were involved in critical security needs for communication, something like Tails ...

Re: Tor anyone? [closed]

Thanks much for the advice! The snooping into everything internet seems to be an unfortunate reality these days. I'm interested in learning more about encryption and obscurity. Thankfully, I'm no longer tied to Microsoft. Windows 10 looks like a nightmare. - Curt

Tor anyone?

I just renewed my ATT Uverse internet connection and bought a $30/month discount by allowing ATT to monitor my browsing links for perusal by marketers and advertisers. Having read up via Glenn Greenwald in the meantime about ATT's habit of allowing NSA to snoop on their ISP data, I am considering ma...

LMDE 2 Chromium freezing; requires power recycle

I plan to do a bit more investigating on this one, but on a lark thought I'd post. Over the last month or so I've had my laptop touchpad mouse freeze up while using Chromium on LMDE 2. Forces me to power off and reboot, though there may be more sophisticated ways of rescuing the session. I also run ...

Re: how set default boot to other system?

I am glad you got it worked out ! Please go to your first post, click EDIT, and add [SOLVED] to the title. By the way, I quit using Grub Customizer a long time ago because I didn't like what it was doing to my grub files. Out of curiosity, what was it doing to your grub files that was objectionable?

Re: Pushed over the edge . . .

Like others here I welcome you too. Please make time to read this http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm (Linux is not Windows). When I was a newbie to Linux I wish someone had suggested it to me because it helps answer some of the frustrations in switching from MS systems to Open Source. Good luck,...

Re: LMDV, anyone?

I consider it badge of honor when people want to turn every other distro into a LinuxMint 'spin'. And rightly so! Mint flavors of both Ubuntu and Debian - but especially Debian - give me the best of both worlds I care about: user "friendliness" from a very usable desktop environment, and ...

LMDV, anyone?

I know this is a bit off the wire, but as a follower of the mailing list for the Devuan distro project I have to wonder: if the Devuan developers somehow bring to fruition a first production version of Devuan as an easily distributed ISO, would there be any interest among the LMDE developers of perh...

Re: Which version of Mint for what hardware?

Hi, there. Great you are enjoying GNU/Linux as an operating system. It's a good one, and you certainly have a hunk of hardware to accommodate about anything out there! Before posting too much more stuff, just a suggestion or two. Google search information about the history of Linux and Linux distros...

For programming help on Linux distros in general, I'd recommend going to the Programming Forum at the "linuxquestions.org" website. Here's the link:

Ah, thank you! That pretty much explains it. My next step was to try doing the same for my LinuxMint 17.1 partition. Should have done that first!

[SOLVED] error in trying to load PPA repository

Hello. I am trying to install the repository as seen below, and get the error response as shown: curt@curt_lmde2 ~ $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer [sudo] password for curt: Adding PPAs is not supported curt@curt_lmde2 ~ $ This has probably been answered before, but so...

Re: Problem installing LMDE2 on netbook: can't resize dialog

Not exactly relevant to local issue, but my old age computer claim to fame is that I'm running Mint Cinnamon 17.1 on my 2005 MacBook Pro. Apple no longer supports the computer for OS updates, so new life came via installing Mint. Just had to install fan control software. Linux gives old hardware a f...
