Re: Dual Monitor set up not working

Thanks Larry for the reply. I haven't yet done what you suggested because here is an update in case it changes your recomendation: After doing some googling, I found an article that suggested checking BIOS and seeing if there is a monitor or graphics setting that may be affecting things. In the BIOS...

Dual Monitor set up not working

I have two monitors connected to my computer. (One on the vga port of my motherboard and another on a graphics card - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti). When I was running the live Linuxmint USB both monitors were working ok. Upon install, only one monitor is being recognised by LM (the one connected to the vga ...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Thanks Cliff. I hope my reply wasn't a little too abrupt. Maybe I am still in my microsoft Windows thinking regarding updates etc. I am moving all my machines (5 or 6) away from any and all forms of windows, especially as windows 7 nears its so called end of life. Hence my eagerness to get various d...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Can anyone explain what I did to make this right? Colin Simple: you updated. It's good practice to always update whenever you are notified. Yes indeed. But I don't understand why I have had to go through so many loops just to install this albeit on an old laptop. Why wasn't whatever the "fix" was, ...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

UPDATE: I ran update manager and it took a while. There were probably 60 or more things that needed updating.. Once this was done I first rebooted and went into the grub menu using shift. I edited out the nomodeset that I had permanently added to the grub file to allow me to get past the login loop ...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Hi, I have no longer used the encrytion for the home folder etc. I reinstalled a few times after that. Regarding nomodeset, unless I make it permanent by modifying the default\grub file then I can't get past the log in screen. It simply loops back to it each time I log in. https://askubuntu.com/ques...

Re: LinuxMint Xfce is not using my full laptop screen.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Firstly, I went into Driver Manager and after entering my password it updated the cache. Once complete the Driver Manager window was empty and all it says at the botton is "No proprietary drivers are in use". In the Settings > Display screen I only currently have onc...

LinuxMint Xfce is not using my full laptop screen.

I was having a login loop and couldn't log in to Linux Mint 19.2 xfce on my old sony vaio laptop following a brand new install on a new hard drive. I was given advise to edit a file to add nomodeset at the boot up. By doing this I was able to login after entering my password instead of reverting bac...

Re: Linux Mint Keep Asking For Password Over and Over Again

Search the installation section. I had a login loop and by adding nomodeset I was able to get through this constand loop and actually log in for real.

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

What I have just done is to sudo edit the grub file under etc/default/ directory. In the grub file I changed the following line from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" This seems to stop the login loop from happening and I can now login i...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Hi all, A quick update as I try some things: I am trying to follow some of the links mentioned above...After hitting shift after rebooting I got into some kind of menu and from memory I think I hit e (perhaps short for edit) and I was able to change "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" on the page. Then hi...

Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Thank you for the reply pbear. I will get the time a little later this afternoon to have a go at some of these suggestions. Re: Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Many thanks for the reply. I think the disc is fine based on my limited knowledge. After i hit ctrl,alt,F1 I am able to get to command line etc. The linuxmint files are there on the new disc, approximately 8GB of them after install. I have also been able to create some dummy text files and save them...

Login Loop - 19.2 Xfce - Should I give up?

Hi. I'm fairly new to linux for PC's, having just a basic knowledge of running LAMP etc for web development. Having said that I have successfully migrated a number of PC's away from windows 7 onto Linuxmint cinammon 19.2 and this has been quite smooth. Based on the above "success" I decided to try a...

How to make a bootable cd/dvd - What size does it need to be

Apparently there are no such things as "stupid" questions....so here goes ;-) I have an old Sony laptop (7 years old) and want to put Linux Mint 17.1 onto it. I have successfully installed linuxmint onto a few PC's using a bootable usb. However, the old laptop will not boot from a usb. I can only us...

Re: Can't send emails when using linuxmint as a local server

Thanks for the replies! I think I have come across a way to see the emails being sent and received without involving any external smtp services, or without modifying any drupal or wordpress installations. It involves setting up a "dummy" sendmail program (basically a mini script) which acts like sen...

Re: Can't send emails when using linuxmint as a local server

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Basically, I am trying to create (as close as possible) a local web development server where I can test various web sites and modifications, etc, before making these changes on live websites. I have no idea on how to manage a full blown server and the security implications ...

Can't send emails when using linuxmint as a local server

Hi, I have installed the latest linux mint on a little server in my house. I am doing some web development work and have set up apache, mysql and php on it. I have created some test websites and some are in drupal and some in wordpress. All local websites seem to be working fine apart from email. Ne...
