SOLVED:Laptop with 2 hard drives: Windows 10 & Linux Mint 19. There is never an opportunity to boot into Windows

I know this is a Linux forum but this problem does have to do with Linux. Please hear me out. This all started when I got an Alienware 15 R3 last year. Here is what I have done over the course of a year in order: 1. I took the HDD out of the Alienware and replaced it with a 1TB SATA SSD. I never onc...

Installing Mint on M.2 SATA 3? Is this possible? Is there any advice you can give?

I hope I'm using the right terminology. I ordered this for my Alienware 15 R3 with the objective of using my SATA SSD (the original SSD) for Windows and this new SATA 3 for Linux. Then it occurred to me: is this even possible? Can I SATA 3 be used as a boot drive? If it can, that will be terrific si...

Re: Node.js... I'm doing something wrong and I can't figure out what

Hi James_Smith, Although this might be in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), there is a Linux deb file link in the link below, save and double-click to install it. Download & Find your devices | Get Prey's Anti-Theft for Free https://preyproject.com/download/ How to Install and...

Re: How do I create special characters or assign keys to do different things?

Suggestion: The next time you post specs, enclose them in Code Display tags. That's the </> icon on the toolbar. It keeps everything in one block, and is much easier to read. I usually type out "code" when doing that but this time I clicked the "c" to the left of "rimg" thinking it would display ev...

Node.js... I'm doing something wrong and I can't figure out what

I'm trying to install a program called Prey. It tracks your computer if it gets stolen. I have it installed on all of my devices (including a LM 17 machine) and I never had a problem before but I'm missing something this time around on my LM 19 computer. It requires you to install Node.js first whic...

How do I create special characters or assign keys to do different things?

This is kind of silly and frivolous but I think it would be fun to learn. I have an Alienware 15 R3. Here are its specs: System: Host: mac-Alienware-15-R3 Kernel: 4.15.0-33-generic x86_64 bits: 64 gcc: 7.3.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 3.8.8 (Gtk 3.22.30-1ubuntu1) Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara Machine: Device: l...

Re: Importation of passwords, bookmarks, etc. doesn't seem to be possible with Firefox on LM19 Cinnamon

Are you sure that Synch is turned on for your machine? I've been caught in the past when re-loading (either Windoze or FF), and forgetting to set up synch properly. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "turned on for [my] machine." I think I do, but let me say this: I've just uninstalled Firefox...

[SOLVED] Importation of passwords, bookmarks, etc. doesn't seem to be possible with Firefox on LM19 Cinnamon

I don't understand this at all. Maybe it's something I'm missing or doing wrong but, in the past, I have had no trouble with my Firefox account new computers or computers with new OS. Normally I sign in to my account whereupon it tells me to complete the process by checking my email. The email conta...

What is Linux used for? Are jet airliners using Linux OS?

The reason I ask is that I was on a plane some years ago and they rebooted the entertainment system. Soon enough Tux pops up on the screen and I said "Oh, Linux!" Now, at that time I didn't really understand exactly what Linux was but I knew the penguin. Well, I hadn't even realized I'd said it out ...

Re: Fresh install of LM19: after logging on I only see blank screen & CANNOT get into Terminal

There is some relevant information about your situation in the Mint 19 Release Notes. Please read the section "Solving freezes during the boot sequence" https://linuxmint.com/rel_tara_cinnamon.php This worked. Before I started this thread I had tried it but I must have missed a step or messed somet...

SOLVED Fresh install of LM19: after logging on I only see blank screen & CANNOT get into Terminal

The machine is an Alienware 15 R3. I had LM 18 Cinnamon on it and it worked just fine. I didn't see an easy path to upgrade. I had some issues with 18 (unable to do certain upgrades) so I decided that the best course of action would be to create a LM19 Cinnamon boot drive and start fresh. The instal...

I found this on github. I'm terribly jet-lagged right now. When I get some sleep I'll go through it and see what I can figure out.

I have the same machine and I just installed LM 19. Did you find a solution elsewhere?

I'm using my MacBook Pro to reply to this post but I'm using a USB mouse and keyboard :(

I need to edit some bits out of some videos. Some are avi, some are mkv, some are mp4, etc.

I am all for artistic integrity but I work part of the year in a country that has very strict religious laws so there are some sections of some movies and TV shows that I'd like to cut out.

What is a good program for doing this?

I checked that first. It looks like it's not set to clear cookies or do anything when the browser's closed.

Try running chromium from the terminal and copy/paste any error messages you get from the terminal here. mac@mac-Alienware-15-R3 ~ $ chromium-browser Using PPAPI flash. --disable-new-tab-first-run --enable-user-scripts --ppapi-flash-path=/usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libpepflashplayer.so --ppapi-flash...

Chromium has suddenly started logging me out of everything all the time

...including Chromium itself. This just started just before the last Kernel update and the last Chromium browser update, so it doesn't have anything to do with that.

It's so bad that if I close this window right now and re-open it, I will be logged out of—not just this website—but Chromium as well.

Hey James, you could try "Brightness controller" http://www.noobslab.com/2017/06/are-you-using-linux-on-laptop-if-yes.html . "It lets you control the brightness, Color temperature of the display and RGB as well". If you decide to try it be sure use the "sudo apt-get install brightness-controller br...

Re: My laptop won't boot: it might be because it overheated

That is good news. It sounds like perhaps a corrupted graphics driver. Try rebooting to your hd and get to grub boot screen. Choose the second choice 'Advanced options'. Then with the top kernel highlighted press e (for edit). Use the arrow keys to scroll the curser down to the line that begins 'li...
