What is a good, very basic, photo (jpg, png, bmp) editor?

I just want to be able to crop, cut/copy all or part of the pic and past, adjust contrast, maybe add text, arrows, etc.

Cannot switch from Cinnamon to Mate.

First, the basics of my system: System: Host: mac-Aspire-V5-122P Kernel: 3.13.0-37-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca I I started out with Cinnamon, but I wanted to try MATE because, as you can see, I'm not running much of a computer (1 GHz processor, 4 bits RAM)....

Re: Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

I can't stand Win 8 as it looks like something made for a smartphone and not a PC. I still have a few laptops that are dual boot with win 7/Ubuntu 14.04 or Linux Mint 17 or Ubuntu 14.10 and even one with LM 13. There are some downsides as Windows will always have better hardware support just becaus...

Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

I am new to Linux and I like it (despite some newbie issues, that I've been resolving as I go), but I wonder why you (yes, you) went away from Microsoft products and embraced Linux?

For me, Linux looks cleaner, and doesn't seem as clunky as MS Windows.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: How do I run a program if it doesn't show up in the menu

Thanks for the help, but I had other issues as well. My computer was runnng slower and slower and slower, every day. And, when I plugged my 4T-byte external hard drive up to my computer, everything froze. Nothing worked, whereas, it worked before (right after I installed LM17) and the hard drive als...

Re: How do I run a program if it doesn't show up in the menu

You might have bigger problems than you thought :? I hope not, although, my computer has been running very slow for the last week or so (I installed Linux Mint 18 only about 3 weeks ago). I don't know if this issue is related. Does this return the file listing ls -lh /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubun...

Re: How do I run a program if it doesn't show up in the menu

Usually when I install a program, I can click the start menu, fund the program and run it. Sometimes, I can't find it in the start menu. In this case, I installed recoverdm. I can't find it using the search function in the start menu and I don't know how to run it using the terminal. Any help you c...

Re: How do I run a program if it doesn't show up in the menu

If it's a terminal application without graphical user interface, you can only run it from the terminal. What does running "recoverdm" from the terminal yield as output? In the terminal: recoverdm Press Enter. Pjotr, this is what comes up: recoverdm recoverdm v0.20, (c) 2003-2004 by folkert@vanheusd...

Re: How full is my hard drive? I don't know!

Hello, James_Smith. Inside the Mint menu there should be a sub-menu named "System Tools". Inside "System Tools" there should be a launcher item named "Analyze Disk Usage" (provided my translation from German back to English is correct). The application behind the launcher item "Analyze Disk Usage" ...

[SOLVED] How full is my hard drive? I don't know!

Using Windows, with one click, I could see how full my hard drive was. With Linux, I don't see a "My Computer" that I can click that shows my internal hard drive, and other plugged in storage devices, and how full they are. I know this is the newbiest of newbie questions, but I really need to monito...

[SOLVED] downloaded Google Earth. Now I can't find it.

Being a former Windows guy (and not a very enthusiastic one), I thought that I'd be able to search for it and find it on my computer, or that I'd be able to find something called "Programs" wherein I could find the program and launch it. No such luck in either case. I went back to the Software Cente...

Is there a way to erase history in the terminal?

It's handy, of course, but it's slightly annoying having to scroll past mistakes I've made whilst figuring Linux out.

If this doesn't make sense, I'll try to explain it better.

Re: Acer Aspire V5: no screen brightness control

Well, I have a clue: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 7&p=983185

It's a whole lot clunkier than using the Fn keys, of course. There has to be a solution to this.

Acer Aspire V5: no screen brightness control

I've searched the forum and some threads come close, but no solution has worked yet. The problem appears to have something to do with /File Systems/sys/class/backlight/radeon_bl0 but I don't know which file to edit, or how to edit it (that is to say, what parameters to change or how to change them)....
