Re: My mom is 70 and is thinking about going with Linux Mint. She's on the fence. What should I tell her to convince her

She has a Dell desktop from 2009. I don't know much about it other than that it has Windoze 7 and Office (I'm not sure which edition). Her computer usage pretty much breaks down as follows: 1. Surfing the internet (watching youtube vids, Facebook, doing genealogy, looking up stuff about knitting, p...

Re: Is there any advantage to installing Linux on an Apple machine?

1. Yes, that is true. Firmware updates do require using macOS. However, you can get a USB drive and install the latest macOS version your Mac will run. I have an external 1TB USB drive with Mountain Lion on it. I can boot to it at any time. If I need to do a firmware update, I can boot into Mountai...

Re: Is there any advantage to installing Linux on an Apple machine?

I have an iMac 9.1 with Mint 18.3 Cinnamon installed. Works perfectly. The install was different than 18.1 and 18.2 in that running driver manager to use the Broadcom wireless drivers worked fine in 18.1 and 18.2 but failed in 18.3; I had to connect via wire to the network to get driver manager to ...

Re: Is there any advantage to installing Linux on an Apple machine?

Ok, I missed out on the 11 inch I mentioned above but I just bought a used 2017 MacBook Pro. It's on the way to my house right now. Wish me luck  :?

Is there any advantage to installing Linux on an Apple machine?

I have a chance to buy a used Mac 11" laptop for $800. With the Apple iOS it starts up in about 1 second and it's faster than any computer I've ever had. So, as the subject line above says: is there any particular advantage to running an Apple computer with Linux? It seems to me the answer would be ...

LibreOffice: "No templates installed" when I try to create a document.

I'm running LM 18.3 Cinnamon and this is my 4th Linux machine. For some reason, I was able to figure this out on my previous three machines but cannot figure it out on this one. It's a little embarrassing. First let me explain what should happen: On Windows, and on my first three Linux machines, whe...

I thought that might be it after I posted this. I have Adblock Plus. I just turned it off and still I get a blank page.

Chromium issue: I can't access certain websites with Chromium but I can with Firefox, with my Android phone & my iPad

This is the website: https://www.jetcityamplification.com/

I can access it with everything except Chromium. I can even access it with Chrome but not Chromium. In fact, with Chromium, I can't even access the cached version of the site or any page on the site.

Ipad Mini 4: not able to transfer files to or from

I've tried three things: 1. Just plugging it up and hoping that the computer saw it as a storage device (like it does when I plug my Android phone up to it). 2. Downloading Dukto on the iPad and the laptop. 3. Connecting the two with Bluetooth. None of these work. Fortunately, Linux does recognize t...

Re: HP OfficeJet 8715 plugged in via USB but not detected. Simple Scanner says No Scanners Detected. Can't scan or print

thanks James; so it seems to me you still just have the 3.16.3 version of hplip installed; so this page from HP suggests how to install hplip https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/install/install/index and it's here for completeness; but if you are happy to copy the commands below...

This will definitely be green.

To reverse this and get back to normal:

Code: Select all

xgamma -r 1.0; xgamma -g 1.0; xgamma -b 1.0
Ah, ok now I understand. Thank you.

What am I doing wrong? Nothing. You're using nvidia prime, which is used to support hybrid Intel and nvidia GPUs. That would explain why you don't get the tab. You'll have to wait for someone with experience in that setup. Sorry, I can't help you further. Ok, well I appreciate you trying. Thank you.

Re: Weird question: how can I make everything look green? I mean everything. Everything on my display. I want it all gre

I clicked on the program and didn't see any place to select my monitor nor could I find anyway to do a color correction. Select your GPU and monitor in the left panel. There is a colour correction tab in the right panel. I've clicked everything and I can't see colour correction anywhere. http://ist...

Re: Weird question: how can I make everything look green? I mean everything. Everything on my display. I want it all gre

You can set the screen rgb in the terminal using xgamma: xgamma This will show the present rgb values--most likely 1.000 for each. These can be changed and you will probably want to reduce the setting for red and blue. man xgamma will explain how Ok, I can't figure out how to do it. I found this, o...

[SOLVED] Weird question: how can I make everything look green? I mean everything. Everything on my display.

I get migraines. Sometimes I have them 20 or more days per month. Then again, sometimes I go for months with none. The worst I've ever had was 27 days of migraines, one day of relief, and then 27 more days. That was back in 2010. What does this have to do with Linux and the color green? Well, it tur...

Is there a program that automatically adds/corrects metadata in audio files?

I have a lot of audio files that have names like 01 track 1.mp3 with no other information.

It would be a bonus if you can use it to manually change or add metadata.
