Mint Debian for Tablets?

OK, this 'Debian-rolling-release-Mint' distro is catching my interest, and here is my first question about it: Is there anything known right now that would disqualify this distro as being useful for the (near?) future crop of Atom/ARM-based tablets being released? I am thinking specifically of Ubunt...

Re: Installing PAE Kernel

I had mentioned this in a couple of similar threads in the past: http://techie-buzz.com/foss/how-to-lift-ubuntu-linux-ram-limit.html When I installed Mint 9, I just did what that link says: sudo apt-get install linux-generic-pae Is this what you guys meant? I did not need to figure out which kernel ...

Re: Webcam Recommendations

I am currently running Mint 9, but I think the advise to go for 'UVC' webcams would almost guarantee functionality with Linux, and with Skype under Linux. So, for instance, I successfully used the recent crop of Microsoft 'Lifecam' webcams with Skype on my Mint system (Lifecam Cinema and Lifecam HD-...

Re: How to enable Remote Desktop via a configuration file

That is a great question! I was curious myself, so I did some hunting, and here is a pretty good reference page for how to do this: http://www.samlesher.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-704-enabledisable-remote-desktop-from-the-command-line HOWEVER, it doesn't appear to work for me at all! Here is an Ubuntu user t...

Re: How to make Microsoft LifeCam work in Mint

could you please provide a proper command lines, I have to use, to get that camera working. this introduction didn't help at all.. libv4l-0 was already loaded, but rest didn't gave me anything to go on with. Have you already tried the 'cheese' app (which is included with Mint, AFAIK)? Are you sayin...

Re: Cannot install Mint 9 on Acer aspire One

Sorry to keep you hopping, but does your Acer Aspire One have an Intel video chip of the 8xx series? If so, you may want to follow the path that I used to work around the problem I had on my old Dell Inspiron: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=47825&p=276340#p276340 I would suggest se...

Ah! This thread is the hint that I was looking for! I had previously issued the following problem: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=47031&start=140#p273791 After seeing this thread, Google led me to here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1471605 ...which led to here: http://...

Re: Cannot install Mint 9 on Acer aspire One

I don't know if it is related or not, but I reported something similar on my old Dell laptop: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=47031&start=140#p273791 It would be interesting to know where in the bootup sequence you are having trouble. Why not hit the 'escape' key while it is bootin...

Re: How to make Microsoft LifeCam work in Mint

As suggested, more info is required to assist with the original post. However, I can report that I just received my ordered Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000, and it *appears* to work OK (image shows up in Cheese and Skype, and audio plays back in Skype test call). I was not able to determine ahead of time ...

Re: Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" RC released!

I don't want to look foolish here, but I thought I would mention something strange about the behavior of one of my PCs with the new Mint 9 Isadora RC release (386)... This ISO boots fine on two of my PCs (desktop Gateway SX2800 with flash drive, and old laptop Fujitsu P2120 with burned CD), but hang...

Re: Only 3gb of 4gb memory detected

I read and did this: http://techie-buzz.com/linux-tips/how-to-lift-ubuntu-linux-ram-limit.html ...and now my Quad core Gateway SX2800 is seeing all ...

Re: MythTV and Mint 8

I am certainly no authority on the use of MythTV, especially with Mint, but I can confirm that I do use it: my MythTV 'backend' is currently running on a Fedora 10 Atom 330-based PC. and when I switched my desktop distribution to Mint, I was also able to run a MythTV 'frontend' there as well. For me...

Re: Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro: Skype Problem

The solution to this problem can be found here!! http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/52261/ :D Thanks for this! For me, at least, the problem mostly went away on its own, but I guess if this is a 'timeout' problem, then it would suggest that that there is some leeway for it working/not working for so...

I am having the same problem.

How would I force the 'Helena' version of xsane to be installed rather than the stock Ubuntu one, if that is (for some reason) the problem?

[invalid] Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro: Skype Problem

[Newbie here with a bug report...be gentle] My "Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro" (ID 046d:08b1) works fine in Fedora 10 with Skype 2.0.0.72 and kernel 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686. This is a 'PWC' webcam. Mint Gloria Xfce works fine with this webcam with Skype 2.0.0.72 and kernel 2.6.28-11-generic. M...

Re: help in my career

It is tricky to suggest what to focus on in such a short time, but IMHO, I would concentrate on the following: 1) Learning to use the 'vi' editor -- a universal (?) non-GUI editor for every Unix-flavored OS that I have used 2) Learn how to use the 'command line' and the most common utilities availab...
