Re: cannot mount USB hard disk in Mint XFCE

Dear Mute Ant, thank you for your reaction. I do not dare to change members of system groups, because I do not know the consequences for the system. I solved the problem, or better: worked around it, by removing Mint XFCE and replacing it by Mageia 6 XFCE. Everything works now as expected, and I am ...

[Worked Around] cannot mount USB hard disk in Mint XFCE

On a Toshiba Satellite computer I installed Linux Mint XFCE 18.3 64-bit. The computer is old and slow, but still acceptable. There is a aggravating problem however: it is impossible to mount a hard disk via USB. Thunar sees the partitions, but trying to mount them I get the error: GDBus.Error:org.fr...

What happens when you choose another channel for your wifi?

Re: Opinion: What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"?

I asked the owner of a computer shop why he refused to sell computers with GNU/Linux installed. He gave two reasons: 1. He is fully conversant with windows and can do anything with it. He does not have the time to learn handling Linux. 2. He must make a living for his own family and for his assistan...

Re: Cannot open Terminal in Caja

Dear administrollaattori, I tried all your suggestions, but no joy. So I took a "violent" measure and deleted .config, .cache, .local and linuxmint hoping that all desktop settings would have to be installed again. I logged in with a brand new desktop, made my personal adjustments, and now all is we...

Re: Cannot open Terminal in Caja

administrollaattori, thank yo for your reply. I do not want to open the terminal as root. This is what I get when I want to open an ordinary terminal as user. Some setting must have changed, but I cannot find where. I know that I can start any program via Alt-F2, but I want to open a directory selec...

["Solved"] Cannot open Terminal in Caja

I am using Linux Mint Mate "Serena" 64-bit. Today I wanted to open a directory in a terminal. So I selected it in Caja, right-clicked and chose "Open in Terminal as I use to do. But today it did not work. I got another window in which I could type a command and execute it as root or any other user, ...

Re: nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

Dear Hinto, I reinstalled Linux Mint Mate 18.1 on freshly formatted partitions and, mirabile dictu, the problem is solved. Everything works as expected: the nfs directory opens at boot! I have no idea what I did differently now, but all is well. Thank you very much for your support. Greetings, Erik ...

Re: nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

Dear Hinto, thank you for all your help. User ID and group ID are the same on all computers that are connected via NFS. I have given up. I believe that there is some change of policy in Linux Mint Mate 18.1 compared to 17.3. I do not know how to change this. I had a look at the polkit-1 files in /et...

Re: nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

Dear Hinto, I followed your advice, installed autofs, edited /etc/auto.master put a new directory in root, /net, and booted again. Still no joy. To my surprise I could not find the program "autofs" anywhere, so I don't know what happened. I had a look at boot.log and found: ~ $ systemctl status mnt-...

Re: nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

Thank you all for your suggestions. I tried them all. I found that in my case "auto,x-systemd,automount" works fastest during boot, but did not start the nfs-share on the client. Searching the internet I found the suggestion to start rpcbind via the command: "sysctl enable rpcbind && sysctl start rp...

Re: nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

Today I installed Mate 18.1 on another computer and to my dismay I cannot get nfs share working. The solutions that I had found before (see first post of this thread) does not work. I searched on the internet but I did not find a solution. I cannot believe that no one else using Mate 18.1 has tried ...

[solved] nfs parameters in Mint Mate 18

When Mate 18, "Sara" came out, I installed it on my Acer Inspire One netbook, because version 17.3 had become slow like melasse. I do not understand why. I installed "Sara" on newly made partitions in order to be certain that there are no allocation tables problems. After installation I could not ch...

Re: How to change superuser password

Thank you all for your advice and help. I appreciate it. I am always touched by the friendliness of those who help out at forums. I myself always do my system management the way you describe and advice. I have been a user of Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia for about ten years now. In these systems I have t...

Re: How to change superuser password

I have been looking around with the help of Puppy Linux and found that in my home directory there is a hidden file "gksu.lock" that renews itself every time I delete it. So maybe one of my questions ought to be: What setting do I have to change to prevent this file from renewing itself after each an...

How to change superuser password

Dear Linux Mint Mate fans, I am new to Linux Mint Mate and am quite enthousiastic about it. However there are a few problems I encounter: Today I added another user to my fresh Mate 17.1 installation. I gave him the authority to shell out to root permissions. I reduced the former user's permissions ...
