Re: mouse cursor becomes invisible after chaning users on cinnamon 18

I have the same problem. This is a fresh install of LM18 on a DELL laptop with a USB mouse, trackpad and a rubber button thing in the middle of the keyboard. A user switch makes the mouse cursor invisible (but still active). A ctrl-alt-esc brings it back straight away, even before the Xorg has time ...

I'd start a new thread for that. Also post the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F
and probably

Code: Select all

uname -a; lsusb
so people can see your hardware and usb devices (I'm assuming your bluetooth module is on the usb bus, it might not be).

Re: Mint on Mac

I do find that boot sound annoying but what I mean is if we can control that sound from Mac why not from Mint ? Actually that MacOS installed on that camp is in some other language, perhaps chinese. and I do not have a superuser password for that OS so I do not want it to waste space on that comp. ...

Re: Mint on Mac

(1) When a Mac Book starts it makes a starting music. To stop that I found some forums suggested that I need to use some command like sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00" IN THE MAC terminal ! Does that means I still do not have full control over my computer ? For some hardware control I might have t...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy (SOLVED)

A quick update on this thread. Video playback was really smooth when using the "xv (1 - Intel(R) Video Sprite)" output option, but I found that it crashed Cinnamon after a system sleep/wake. The video window was floating on a slightly blue background, and it showed OVER the cinnamon screensaver pass...

Re: System lock up still not solved

tomC; OK, the short story is that your computer is underpowered for the taskS that you are asking it to do. If you are interested in the specs on your CPU, you can find them HERE . I have a first-gen i5 CPU from 2011 and that seems to run things fine with 4GB RAM and the 64bit cinnamon version of M...

Re: EPSON XP-235 / Image Scan v3

Hello all, I just got this printer and have it set up to use WiFi. I got it on the wireless network using my Windows10 laptop and a USB cable (WPS didnt work on my router for some reason...) I only installed the printer driver, following instructions here: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02/Dri...

Re: Update error The following packages cannot be authenticated!

I was installing from the command line and saw this error. I cancelled, then ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
The install then went smoothly. Phew!

Re: PLS advise on how to get a working system back after freeze

If the computer reacts at all - my understanding of your starting post is, that it does not - the first try is to press ctrl-alt-esc for restarting cinnamon. If this does not work you might try ctrl-alt-del for logging off. Next try would be ctrl-alt-backspace to restart the X-system. Thanks Cosmo ...

Re: PLS advise on how to get a working system back after freeze

Try sudo service mdm restart Thanks cosmo, i will try that. I still think that logging off the user sessions will be helpful, any suggestions on how to do that? Would this do it? killall -u user I was thinking that killing the 'broken' user session and afterwards restarting MDM might be the best wa...

I use LuckyBackup to save a copy of my /home/ to a linux-formatted hard drive.

Its always a good idea to make a backup, but especially before you go ahead and start installing/re-installing an OS.

Re: Where is Linux Mint 18!!!!

@Zorba: your exclamation key is stuck. Please fix it before replying. LOL, yes and by the sounds of it we should all be VERY patient. LM 17.3 is working very nicely for me and I am going to try hard to stick with it for as long as possible. I might move up to 18.1 or even 18.2 - by then all the ".0...

PLS advise on how to get a working system back after freeze

I'm running LM Cinnamon 17.3 and have 3 users set up on my machine. We spend most of the time using "switch-user" to jump between each others logins, which generally works nicely. BUT, every so often (and I cant spot any pattern to it) the screen is black after a user switch. Sometimes switching acc...

Re: System lock up still not solved

I installed Mate 17.3 32 bit and it is working fine. Mate gives you the ability to switch between compositing and window managers, so if you have any issues with screen tearing etc then try playing around with them. On my DELL laptop I found that Mate with Compiz was a good combination in terms of ...

Re: System lock up

Thanks everyone for all your help. I installed another 2 gig ram and so far no more problems. I now have the maximum ram this board will take (4 gig) so if it does lock up again I will just switch from 64 bit mint to 32 bit. I will wait a few more days before I mark the thread as solved. I have LM1...

Wow, that is odd! :) It's probably just a temporary graphics bug. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again. Yeah, tell me about it! Text was replaced by coloured blocks - any ideas?

I was using Firefox this afternoon and all the text in the web page and also the application became scrambled! I quit FF and then saw the same effect in the file manager. I managed to grab a screenshot and rebooted. Everything seems ok at the moment, does anyone have a suggestion on what happened? :...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

Well, the newer versions have that support for vaapi that I talked about earlier, in addition to the usual fixing of bugs and improved features and so on. I did not initially recommend you install PPAs, because 1. That is not safe practice in general, and 2. It is an extra step and 3. I couldn't re...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

No, 0.8.6 is not the version of Smplayer I use. I use version 16.4.0. I do not use mplayer 1.1. It is old, and you should delete it. I instead have configured Smplayer to use mpv git-3353923 (C) 2000-2016 mpv/MPlayer/mplayer2 projects, built on Sun Mar 20 13:52:21 UTC 2016. Review again my blog pos...
