Re: screen brightness

Hello, I think I have a similar problem. I can not regulate the screen brightness at all. I have a Dell Laptop with an Nivida Card and when it works at battery, the brightness is to low to see anything and I can not change it. My Dell has intel graphics and the Fn keys work great for brightness. It...

One question - did you see it happening with mint 17.1? I didnt on my Dell Latitude, ran an upgrade and have since seen the problem.

Re: Laptop screen brightness keeps dropping down

I'll be monitoring this. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=202085 -- Mike Hi Mike, I have added the following command to my "application autostart" list in the "Session and Startup" preference tool. I havent seen it dim yet, but its too early to tell if this is a fix. xbacklight set ...

Re: How to fix LibreOffice PPA not installing newer versions

LibreOffice version 5 is a big improvement over the 4.x series. Loads faster and is very smooth.

Thanks for the help getting the PPA working!

Re: Laptop screen bightness keeps dropping down

OK.... Please generate an overview of your system Hi Pjotr, thanks for your help. After my posts yesterday, I remembered I had already dried some suggestions from @Cosmo - temporarily adding the following to the linux parameters in grub: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor I rebooted without those...

Re: Laptop screen bightness keeps dropping down

Don't remove the Dell folder; it's safer to let it be. Editing the Dell files looks like a good idea, though.... Afterwards, reboot your computer. even as root, it wont let me edit the files. Either by pico editor or echo... DELL dell_backlight # sudo echo 93 > max_brightness echo: write error: Inp...

Laptop screen brightness keeps dropping down

Since upgrading to 17.2 from 17.1 (I *think*) we are having problems with the Dell laptop i am using. At regular intervals, often after a user logs in, but sometimes 5-10mins after login, the brightness drops down from max to almost nothing. I am using XFCE and the power settings are set to "never" ...

The only issue I am seeing is that the brightness keeps dropping to zero - hitting the brightness on the keyboard brings it back up, but it is a bit annoying...

An interesting idea, one step up from just running the live environment. One issue it might not cover is testing whether the laptop will sleep properly... I tried booting off USB on an old Mac, but USB power gets cut off when sleeping and this forcefully unmounted the stick.

Re: Moving From Win10 to Mint

I'll check that out, and thank you both for the welcome! I do have a question, since I'm here, and still working out the transition. When I go to my login screen, I see this: http://s26.postimg.org/wrd4oibw9/My_Login_Screen1.jpg Should I have two usernames listed? you can change how the login scree...

Re: Does the MATE desktop run on any other distributions?

Other than Mint? I have been using Mint with a MATE desktop because I really like the MATE desktop - but with 17.2 I just can't take the wonky boot issues any more. I have Dell desktops and Lenovo laptops and the boot process just keeps getting worse and worse with every release. You can search on ...

Re: Moving From Win10 to Mint

Welcome to Linux! Mint has been my first real excursion into Linux and has been pretty good so far. No operating system is perfect, I find. In addition to the old DELL running linux in the kitchen (set up for family use), I have a Macbook running OSX and I still use windows 8 on my work laptop. Wind...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

Mint 17.2 Xfce hasn't been de-prioritized; it's quite simply not released yet (should be any day now). :) Ok, I see - I just ran an upgrade from 17.1 and assumed we were at RTM because mint update offered it to me! Phew, everything is working BTW! Regarding the web site the Cinnamon and MATE versio...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

When Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce final iso will be available on the website? I really like the Xfce version of Mint compared to the MATE edition, but it does seem that Xfce has been de-prioritised on the website... - The main download page only features Cinnamon and MATE http://www.linuxmint.com...

Re: [Partially SOLVED]Switch user doesnt go to MDM login man

I have installed dconf-editor and set the "disable-screen-lock" setting in my kids account, hopefully this will let them go straight in (no password needed on their account) Nope, that didnt work. Going back into dconf I found another setting, Or two, actually: (1) org.gnome.desktop.screensaver - i...

Re: [Partially SOLVED]Switch user doesnt go to MDM login man

OK, I am changing the thread to "partially" solved as I have done the following work arounds: 1 - gnome-screensaver has a nice button on it to "switch user" so that when you get dumped onto a random other session when logging out, you can at least hit a button to take you to MDM if you are not looki...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 - Re-Install or Just Update?

To test further I dl'ed the mint 17.1 xfce live iso and booted. Same problem ... severe video tearing. It's not the DE. BTW it's intel integrated hd video ... yup, that's the only designation ... but it's the successor to the intel gma 4500 series. For my laptop Dell E4310 Latitude with intel hd gr...

Re: XFWM4 tearing fix. 17.2 should use latest xfwm

Read a while back, I think it was the roadmap at Segfault iirc. That the Mint Xfce devs were going to look at upgrading to Xfce 4.12 in Xfce edition 17.2. Just have to keep our fingers crossed. :) Xfce 4.12 is indeed included in the 17.2 version of Mint Xfce, so hopefully you will see an improvemen...
