Re: KDE,-- possibly best choice?

Debian-based distros can't run appimages or portable apps. A huge deal breaker for people who use Krita and Blender whose latest builds are in portable form. Even these apps' (Blender and Krita) devs don't use Debian-based distros. One Krita developer openly says she uses Ubuntu, another famous Blen...

Re: Mint 18 - the besk desktop. Period.

Frankly, I never read reviews about Linux at length, good or bad. Many times the features they cover don't match with what I'm interested in. I've waited for years and years and I feel like it finally arrived. I'm not going to wait another decades and stick to something like Debian that to me is sti...

Re: Linux Mint 18.0 is *AWESOME*

I just wish reviewers would specify what they are reviewing. Mint has four flavors. CInnamon, Mate, Xfce and KDE, which is yet to be released. All four flavors have very distinct workflows, menus, look and feel, paneling system, etc. I'd probably just assume they're talking about Cinnamon until othe...

Re: Mint 18 - the besk desktop. Period.

Very good reviews and Mint's future is looking very good. I mostly prefer Ubuntu-based distros, anyways. The amount of support is staggering, which is good for people like me who doesn't have to know everything about Linux. Don't even know how to make, change directories in the terminal, yet I'm usi...

Re: Mint 18 - the besk desktop. Period.

So Mint 18 to the reviewer is Cinnamon. Nothing wrong with that because it's Mint's flagship.

But I'm enjoying Xfce more and have yet to try KDE's next version or release.

Re: Xfce 18?

BTW, I do have a large NTFS partition for media: music, ebooks, photos, etc. to be shared between Win my Linux installs. I haven't experimented on making everything Linux on my machines. My Linux Mint OSes still co-exist with Windows. Windows can't read ext4 drives, while Linux can read ntfs drives...

Re: Xfce 18?

I do not know if this is a factor with other versions of Microsoft's OS or not. But I learned that Windows 8.1 (I think that's the version) has an issue where its "shut down" is actually some kind of bastardized suspend function instead and that it did not properly close the NTFS partitio...

Re: Xfce 18?

I multi-boot my machine, so adding Mint 18 xfce is not an issue. I can move my data over from my primary OS (currently Mint KDE 17.3) more-or-less as I need it, and load the programs I use fresh. As I get familiar with my new OS, I will gradually stop using the old one and can recycle its partition...

Re: Xfce 18?

Not yet. Betas have a way of working fine when you install and then breaking after a software update. I can't believe so many noobs are running the betas and it's not actiuvely discouraged. Maybe there just aren't enough really experienced users? I have multiple backups of my computers. Three have ...

Re: Xfce 18?

I don't even have new hardware but I'm not getting these kinds of issues like you guys are having.
I mean like almost zero issues. It doesn't even feel like it's a beta.

"On the KDE front, things are progressing slowly. There are so many differences between KDE 4 and Plasma 5, we’ve had to work on this edition as if it was a brand new product, inheriting very little from the past and with each component being added one at a time. Most of the critical issues wer...

Re: Xfce on mapping graphics tablet on dual monitors...

Greetings! Since there hasn't been any feedback, i googled your problem and found the following solution @ http://askubuntu.com/questions/51445/how-do-i-calibrate-a-touchscreen-on-a-dual-monitor-system I admit that this is merely a suggestion -- i don't have a tablet to configure for my dual-monito...

I hope the Mint team adds an option for this and include it in the regular updates.

Re: I want Mint 18 KDE! Nooooowwwwwww!!!!

I don't really know the exact association between KDE and Plasma, but it seems to me whoever is behind them they're trying to experiment on something. What I see is they're trying to emulate Windows 10 as shown in the simplified stick icons or breeze theme. They're also trying to integrate desktop a...

Re: I want Mint 18 KDE! Nooooowwwwwww!!!!

I'm predicting 2 months or more before the next Mint KDE is released. Seems to me Plasma 5.x needs tons of work before becoming a serious player in the OS arena. I have tried latest Kubuntu and other KDE-based distros with latest Plasma in it and they're basically in betas. Kubuntu's driver manager ...

Xfce on mapping graphics tablet on dual monitors...[Solved]

Mint Xfce 18 has been providing me all I need in a OS, except this one single item. The option to map your tablet on a particular monitor is missing. Are there any workarounds on this? I saw one in my google search and I've been trying to figure out how to make it permanent. Start menu > Settings > ...

Re: On dual cores - 32bit or 64bit?

For the first time in years I decided to install the 32bit iso (with Xfce 18 as an experiment) replacing 64bit beta I installed earlier. I was thinking maybe this PC (which got one of the earliest dual cores) is not really designed for a 64bit OS. And so I discarded all the setups I've already made ...

Re: On dual cores - 32bit or 64bit?

Because I expect that more and more applications will become 64-bit only.... I used to use 32 bit Mint on my 1Gb netbook but I reinstalled 64 bit when Google announced they would drop 32 bit support. The writing was on the wall. 32 bit Chromium is supported, yes, but how well and for how long? Thos...

Re: On dual cores - 32bit or 64bit?

General knowledge is obviously lacking, lol. There have been dual-core CPUs that were 32-bit. I know, because my old laptop had one. It was an Intel CPU, T2250 IIRC (but I would not swear to it). Thanks. I stand corrected. Let me just conclude by saying I won't be replacing these still very usable ...
