Re: Ubuntu drops Unity and moves back to GNOME

I'm guessing "Unity" means unifying desktop and tablet interfaces, which didn't make sense to me from the very beginning when the obvious difference in screen size is vast. Or the assumption that all desktops would eventually move to touch screen technology and users would all be touching their scre...

Re: What DE to drop?

You don't have to drop any if you know how to multi-boot. But having four distros in one system would start to get wieldy overtime and you end up spending all your time with one or two Mint flavors. Mate is the only one I spent little time with. I'm not a fan of its menu system and I felt whatever f...

Re: How Come I Don't Have Any Questions?

Any Cinnamon theme you found nice-looking?

I haven't gone through all of them but I've been using Glass Wheezy Classic and I like it. I also replaced the Shutdown, Logout and Lock screen icons, in addition.

Re: This is a wireless wifi adapter that works out of the box in Linux Mint!

You can simply blacklist the kernel module of the internal wifi chipset. :) I would try that at some point. Thanks. The list of signals emanating from this neighborhood is quite long, there's not even a scroll down arrow to get to the top where yours is listed. So it would be nice to remove these u...

Re: This is a wireless wifi adapter that works out of the box in Linux Mint!

Same for me here. My built-in wireless card on my laptop always has a weaker signal that my Belkin USB wi-fi. One of the 2 machines with built-in wifi I mentioned is a laptop as well. It even has a button for turning on/off wifi signals. Strange part is the USB won't work if it's turned off, so 2 w...

Re: This is a wireless wifi adapter that works out of the box in Linux Mint!

Reality is most of these wifi adapters work right out of the box. The real issue is is it producing the signal strength it's supposed to produce? Most users would rather assume what they bought is cheap and would think of replacing it with a more expensive one. Most times the signal is tolerable, wh...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

ahh sorry didn't catch you were using 10 year old computers, sorry about that, maybe mint and the old krita might be a better fit for you, it might work better on older computers, the main thing you'll be missing is the guides but if you can handle not having them it should be alright and it also d...

Re: This is a wireless wifi adapter that works out of the box in Linux Mint!

I bought a Netis wifi USB worth $10 about a year ago and it took a while for me to figure out why it's not getting strong signal. I even thought of buying a PCIE wifi adapter or a more expensive USB. Don't know which forum I came across with where another user was having the same issues, then applie...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

Which one might that be? I used it when I paint and draw in Krita. http://www.pureref.com/download.php It's not the only one. There are others which I have to recall like a board game I use when relaxing, which can be had in Mint's software center in GUI. I'm at a stage where I can't be influenced ...

I don't know if you know David Revoy or deevad he changed for the same reason he wrote a good write up to give more details about it in the comments also https://www.davidrevoy.com/article316/ubuntu-16-04-for-my-digital-painting-workstation I have seen that one a year ago and I did exactly how he a...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

Hi thom_A I am using manjaro right now and have krita running on it I use the appimage which krita provides now so you get the latest updated version which also has guides now and runs on qt5 which manjaro has, the software center in mint has the older version (I know because I used it) and I tried...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

I used to try out every distro that piqued my interest. I pretty much have settled with Linux Mint 18.1, Xfce, Cinnamon, KDE. And I only try out Ubuntu-based distros because that's what I'm familiar with, not to mention the massive amounts of resources and support. Every time I try out non-Ubuntu di...

Re: Do you use LibreOffice?

There are .deb files for this (testing or beta?) and the 5.2.6 (stable) versions on http://www.libreoffice.org :) just download the appropriate version for your hardware (x86 or x64) and click the .deb file to launch the installer. I didn't see a PPA but there probably is one, if you want to go dow...

Re: Do you use LibreOffice?

Apparently, LibreOffice's latest version 5.3 was already released.
How do I upgrade this version I have in Mint? But I'm in no rush. I'll soon find out.

So how do you guys find the LibreOffice's version of the MS Ribbon?

Is the enthusiasm gone on KDE/Plasma?

Yeah. I think so. There used to be threads all over the place and some of them are in caps filled with excitement about the next release. Same sentiment here. I'd just rather use Cinnamon or Xfce. When everything works, you tend to just pick the better looking ones. This KDE simplification thing jus...

Re: BUDGIE DESKTOP on linux mint?

To me, I see no more point in re-inventing the wheel. The only new OS desktop that I would appreciate is something that has extras or additions, not something where items I am familiar with are no longer there or eliminated. I never understood why they keep minimizing the power of the right-click mo...

Re: Former distro hopper settling down with Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon

I used to do the same thing. I dual boot with Windows and there is this multi-boot utility called WinSetupFromUSB which allows you to add any number of bootable ISOs in one USB stick, limited only by its capacity. I have settled with Cinnamon and KDE. It could have been Xfce, instead of Cinnamon, bu...

Re: Grub Customizer

Grub Customizer has been an extremely useful tool for me. I'll be lost without it as I constantly add/delete and install distros, Mint and non-Mint, to my crowded multi-boot system. I don't ever change the default theme. I leave it the way it is similar to EasyBCD; just plain low resolution system t...
