Re: Simplification of icons...

The only thing I could complement The Document Foundation for is that they're trying to accomodate all kind sof UI preferences with their Project MUFFin concerning LibreOffice. Project Muffin is a laudable project. It's something all developers need to take a lesson from, and that is the desire "to...

Re: Solus operating system - the future...

Everyone has his/her own individual preferences. I simply can't stay with an OS or app that take less advantage of the right-click for context sensitive menus. When I click RMB on a panel, for instance, I expect to see options to edit, add, configure, etc. This Solus OS wants you to change your ways...

Re: Simplification of icons...

Been doing some intermittent research whenever I have the time mainly finding out the directory locations of these icons. I'm only interested in changing some panel icons and start menu ones that are visible. Not all of them don't have to be changed to your liking. This is what I got for now. xfce_2...

Re: Simplification of icons...

Minimalism has been the design trend in the last years. As with all trends, it will wear out some day. I'm not sure how long until 3D-esque icons will make a comeback, though. Minimalism may be applicable to monochromatic Kindle-type devices. It's a trend, I agree. Just think of it as one of Micros...

Re: Simplification of icons...

It is total degradation of designers mind. Also there is feeling that all designers was fired out and now icons is drawn by preschool children of managers. Or monkey for a bananas. I'm sure a preschool child could come up with better, more discernible icons. You don't have to ask what it is, whethe...

Re: Simplification of icons...

I'm not sure how long until 3D-esque icons will make a comeback, though. They will come back. That's always been my prediction. They will come back when they get tired of these squared/rounded icons. Why, because it's disingenuous to ignore the advantage of transparent background. Icons don't have ...

Re: Simplification of icons...

Please don't change my square icons!!!! Squared icons are not going to go away anytime soon. If you look at your cell phone, icons are squared. That's obviously where design decisions are made nowadays. It will always be linked to them. As if you look at your desktop the same one-feet distance away...

Re: Simplification of icons...

I really don't know the idea behind this simplification thing. I can't even tie it with efficiency when hardware is getting more advanced than ever. (It's like they're designing for old computers.) It's usually one individual that initiates this kind of thing who thinks it's cute like the guy who de...

Re: Finally jumped completely off the Windows ship

I didn't have to jump completely. All I did was to add Linux to make it a dual-boot system. More precisely, it's a multi-boot system with 3 mint flavors, Xfce, KDE and Cinnamon, booting alongside Windows 10. I use Grub Customizer to clean up the boot mess whenever I install a distro. You can grab th...

Re: Simplification of icons...

I use the Faience icon set. It's colourful, distinctive and uses shading. Much quicker to identify at a glance than many of these flat themes. I haven't really explored anything outside of the main Mint OS. I just pick and choose whatever is available. Which Mint are you using, KDE, Cinnamon, Xfce,...

Re: Simplification of icons...

Look at the icons on the MATE panel:
mate_panel_icons.png
Some are distinguishable, but some are not and look similar.

I usually pick the adwata, hicolor, gnome icons, but adwata is not even installed. Seems an indication they're about to be phased out. I don't know why.

Simplification of icons...

Whether you approve of it or not, it seems clear that that's where Linux is going. KDE sample: kde_01a.png Linux Mint's idea of simplication (haven't checked other distros for this) is square-ification of all icons. cinnamon_01a.png It's not a big deal when they're accompanied with descriptions or n...

Re: Switched to XFCE =D

Xfce is simpler to customize especially when populating the panel with icons, then move them around with RMB, remove, add, etc. You can also add an additional panel on the side, control it's length and orientation. Not to mention being able to add new items on the panel like Action buttons, Places, ...

Re: Linux Mint Arch Edition?

I keep telling people I would love to see the Mint Team get completely away from Ubuntu base. Canonical/Ubuntu is/has turned into another Microsoft. They will eventually screw everyone over! I guess what I would really like to see is the Mint Team dropping Ubuntu completely and focus 100% on their ...

Re: Linux Mint 18.1 codenamed “Serena”

Looking forward to Xfce's 18.1 release. The value of these point releases is having a new ISO that is updated, which means it is a refined version of the previous one. It consists all the updates that you have to run when using the earlier one. I don't mind reinstalling the distro, although you don'...
