Re: I'm posting this in a text-only browser!

at any rate, it keeps you safe from that virus known as Adobe flash-player. (Or is it actually spyware, or malware, or... ?) All of the above. I just tried Links. It's very interesting. Blazing fast, too. Some of you may not know that the terminal included in your Linux Mint installati...

Re: Linux Mint is cool in more ways than one!

I noticed that whenever I try to browse the web in Windows, it sounds like a jet engine. Mint, silence. Would Linux make the computer last longer, since it isn't abusing parts like the fan as much? I would assume so, but I don't have too much experience with the hardware part of computers. mrdachshu...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

5th thing: Go to the forums and tell everyone how terrible Windows 10 is! After Windows 10, coming to Linux feels like walking in from outside on a hot day. :D Updates when I want (not when MS wants), reasonable loading times, customizability, an interface that actually looks good... cool and ...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

Windows 10 just seems like an enormous downgrade after running LMDE 2 Cinnamon. I can match Windows feature for feature and LMDE 2 Cinnamon beats it hands down in every way. For Windows users Windows 10 might be a big improvement but for someone that has ran Linux for 15 years it really has nothing...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

I hope for Windows users sake they get the updates for free for the life if the product. It still does not entice me in any way to use it myself though. I hope for Microsoft's sake that users get updates for free until the machine dies. I don't think they want 1 billion angry users with torches and...

Okay, so Microsoft hasn't completely lost its mind. There's still the loss of user control, and ads. There's still "gotchas".

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

I'm not convinced that this is impossible. Despite hard rumors, Microsoft has still not communicated on this. :? Microsoft's silence is stifling. If they wanted to, they could put a huge announcement on the Insider forum about "FREE UPDATES FOR LIFE". Instead, zilch. I gotta say, I was running the ...

Re: Firefox blocks Flash

Good riddance. Unfortunately, it is only disabled , not gone from my computer since there are still some sites that didn't get the memo that Flash needs to go (looking at you BBC  ). As an added bonus, when Flash dies, it takes all those stupid, annoying, flashy ads with it. RIP Flas...

Actually, i wouldn't make any assumption that the information in that article is at all accurate...it is really more speculation then anything else...you know, sensational stories always attract a lot of attention...nothing that it said has been confirmed...actually, it doesn't sound very logical t...

Re: How is a newbie to choose? Manjaro XFCE vs. Linux Mint X

Hi lingben. Manjaro, while certainly more user-friendly than Arch, is probably not as user-friendly as Mint. Manjaro is more bleeding edge, compared to the more conservative Mint approach. This also means that there may be more breakages. Since I'm a newbie the first thing I pay attention to is the ...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

mrdachshund86, that was a nice overview. I however can not agree. any and all OS have issues. Pick one and you can find some things that you and other people do not like. Windows have it's faults but it is not as bad as some people make it sound. I give you that win ME was a disaster, but Vista was...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

Think about this though, entire countries are now moving to open source. Android and Apple dominate the cell phone and tablet market. What does Microsoft really have left? The only country Microsoft has any dominance in is the United States and that's just on OEM desktops and laptops. Microsoft has...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

sounds like MS double talk, they are still intent to have windows OS on phones, but who knows? I read today that they want to have 2 to 4 year subscriptions on Win 10 depending on what version you are running. ie, ( Home Edition 2 yrs. and Pro Edition 4 yrs. ) I would take any news or announcements...

Re: Cinnamon panel weather applet not working

Hi bpeary, 1. In the list of applets, select the "Weather" applet. 2. Next to the "Add to Panel" button in the bottom left, there should be a "Configure" button. Click that. 3. Near the top, click "Get WOEID" 4. The website should explain how to get the WOEID for your area. 5. Copy and paste your WO...

Re: Peppermint 6

Hi robert.thompson. Does this mean that I have done "something" which makes my LinuxMint slow down? Not necessarily. The default desktop environment of Peppermint is LXDE, which is noticeably lighter than the DEs that come with Mint. Also, Peppermint is designed to be lightweight, whereas Mint prior...

Did anyone really believe Windows was going to be free for life? :) I guess you're right. But I do wonder what the pricing is going to be. Are there any pricing details yet? Also, once the lifetime expires, then what? Will it be like Windows XP, where you don't get any more security updates, or wil...

Surely you knew there would be a catch! And here I thought the catch was the spyware and adware present in Windows 10. Just when you think MS couldn't sink any lower, it always finds a way. Re: Where is the Screen Saver Timer ?

Hi vencij, While in Screensaver, if you click on "Setting" in the top (with Screensaver, Settings, and Date), you will see the option "Lock the computer when inactive". This is the timer. If you select 30 minutes, for example, the computer will show a screensaver after 30 minutes of inactivity. mrda...
