Re: Is Upgrade Worth the Time, Plus, BackUp Software...

Hi eagleshadow, The upgrading process is pretty much painless. The new list of new features depends on what desktop environment you are on. If you have MATE, here is the list: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2864 If you have Cinnamon, here is the list: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2863 If you have KDE ...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

originally, they gave the impression that parts of the 3gb download would be put on your system in the updates over time, so that on the 29th, you'd already have everything on your drive to make the install without needing to reach the servers...but apparently that is not the case... Probably the r...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

I joined the MS Insider program only because I like playing around with beta software, you really learn a lot. You know you can always point LMDE to sid. It makes life, ahem, more exciting. Just don't do it with your main PC. I think Cortana has potential for the future There are two ways of ...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

...and it is getting much better. The million dollar question is, will it be better than both Windows 7 and Windows 8 by July 29th. Microsoft is billing Windows 10 as an upgrade, so it better be better than what users had with 7 or 8, or Microsoft could very well be in a PR disaster to end all PR d...

Re: What can I do Java and Linux?

Hello Responsive, For Python, I would suggest http://www.codecademy.com It gets you to the basics of Python, in a very nice way. C/C++ If you want to work on Mint, most development, especially with Cinnamon, is done with C. While it is also good to learn C++, you do need to be aware of the differenc...

Re: How to make Mint MATE as WIN7 like as possible?

Hello bigJohn. Mint "start menu" is kinda nice, but, I like more classic XP style - cascading folder/menus... is that an option? 1. Right click on the panel. 2. Click on "Add to Panel" 3. Scroll Down, click on "Main Menu" 4. Click "Add" Since the new menu is most likely now in the middle of the pane...

Re: Are these guidelines legit?

I have tried out all four of those tweaks, plus many of the others on his website, and can confirm that they should be completely safe. Of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting to double check and make sure the website is legit before copy/pasting "terminal gibberish" and hitting Enter. Only re...

Re: haven't used Mint in a while; updating

Hi there. I haven't turned on my Mint box for a long while What version of Mint are you running? Only 13, 17, and 17.1 are still supported, since they are long term releases. If it is any other version, then you might need to upgrade. If it is an outdated version, see here: "Still using Linux Mint 1...

Re: Clean Window?

Unfortunately when I followed your instructions my Home folder disappeared but all the other folders remained. I wasn't thinking. That option only gets rid of the Trash, Home, etc. icons off the desktop. As far as temporarily hiding folders on the desktop, I'm not sure if there is an easy way to do...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Cinnamon released!

Thanks Clem and the rest of the Mint team! I'll try my best to be patient. Dum de dum de dum. I know the feeling. I feel like a kid on Christmas. :D I've already tried Cinnamon 2.6 on another machine running LMDE, and it is excellent! Sadly, it's a tad slow (the machine, not Cinnamon), so ...

Re: Clean Window?

Hi chuck.

Are you referring to the icons on the desktop?

In that case, you can go to Menu -> Preference -> Desktop Settings -> Desktop, and just disable everything except "Computer".

Sorry if I misunderstood you.

Re: first impressions of Cinnamon: Wow! but...

This is bad! I hope the developers will improve memory usage in the future. I wonder if some of the "heaviness" of Mint comes from upstream. If the Ubuntu layer is overly heavy, how much can the Mint devs do about it? As far as memory usage goes, I think the lightest you can get with Linux Mint is ...

Re: So is there going to be a XFCE 17.2

Hi jbander, Great, now I got to find the difference between 17.1 and 17.2 , The major difference is that 17.2 xfce will probably be running xfce 4.12 instead of 4.10. Also, the KDE and xfce editions usually come about a month after the Cinnamon and MATE ones. Most likely, 17.2 xfce will be released ...

Re: first impressions of Cinnamon: Wow! but...

Another bad thing I've found is memory consumption: in my laptop with core i5, 4MB ram and an Nvidia dedicated graphic card, at idle memory usage is around 500MB. With a Conky on the screen and Dropbox in the tray. I'm shocked! Is this normal? I'm afraid it is. Running just Firefox with two...

Chromium is essentially Chrome, expect without all the nasty bits, like spyware. Chromium devs care for your privacy, whereas Google... Come to think of it, why would anybody use Chrome over Chromium? You can either have a feature-rich browser without spyware or a feature-rich browser with spyware. ...

Re: first impressions of Cinnamon: Wow! but...

Just a word: Wow! So polished, beautiful. That pretty much sums up my first impressions of 17.1 Cinnamon. Before that, I has used Qiana with MATE, which was elegant in many ways too. I can see that the developers have done a lot of effort to give to the customers a nice, polished DE. What else can ...

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=500922 In light of this issue, we have decided to remove the hotwording component entirely from Chromium. As it is not open source, it does not belong in the open source browser. Chromium builds from r335874 (version 45) onwards will have hotwordi...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

Wait...some users may have to pay for Windows 10? :o It's kind of sad, really. I really thought Microsoft had the solution to end piracy once and for all: make a product so repulsive even $0.00 is too much. How long will it be before they offer 2 different versions of their OS - a commercial v...
