Re: Anyone completely Un-Googled?

if you were using any Android 'ph or Tablet, then you'd have issues in avoiding using their service(s). yet, it would be possible, to use that device, without using their service(s), just as you could avoid using any Apple service(s), but - - that would severely limit your use of that device, would...

Re: Why cant we emulate drivers?

While WINE isn't necessarily an emulator, any software I use (Cinebench for example) detects my system as Windows XP. This might explain a lot of the software woes people are facing, especially with newer games running on newer versions of DX (Win XP can't run DX11). Considering how hard it was to r...

Anyone completely Un-Googled?

So in this day and age, most everyone who has a smartphone has a Gmail account (unless they get an iPhone or Windows Phone). Considering Android is running on the Linux kernel, it would only make sense for the die-hard Linux-ers to opt for this platform over the others. Of course, some Linux fans ar...

Re: Non-Windows laptops?

Aside from Chromebooks has anyone been able to find laptops that didn't have Windows preloaded onto them? Also has anyone here loaded Mint onto a chromebook to replace the ChromeOS? If so, how did it go? Did it all work out driver compatibility ect? I replaced Chrome OS with Mint on an Acer C720 bu...

Re: ..Epson no longer

I've had nothing but trouble with Epson (especially how it won't let me scan documents until I buy colored ink). They're basically up there in my 3 most hated companies (just under Verizon and eBay).

Re: No Joy in Mintville Flashing Freezing and Crashing

probably a shot in the dark, but wouldn't you benefit from installing some Nvidia drivers for your GPU? Look for the driver manager in the Mint menu.

Screen Tearing on my HP 840 G1

Running XFCE 18.1, I'd rather not switch to compiz because for some reason it messes up my workflow (keyboard shortcuts don't work the way their supposed to because certain elements wont request cursor focus on Compiz the way they do on xfwm4). I tried disabling the compositor but that doesn't seem ...

Re: Another Mint 18.1/ NVidia question

All the driver gui does is install the nvidia package. It's the package itself that does the rest, and that's made by nvidia.

When it comes to card I've used, 375 is good for newer stuff, 340 is better for older stuff. Your mileage may vary.

Oh and don't forget to reboot.

Re: PhysX?

The version of PhysX used in Borderlands 2 is older than the version that supports Linux. It is unlikely that the games will receive an update to PhysX for Linux support, as that would require updating the base game, rather than just the port (which was done externally). So you're basically saying ...

PhysX?

so I got myself an Nvidia GTX 1050 FTW, and all this time, I thought it didn't have PhysX support because the option was greyed-out in borderlands 2. Apparently it DOES have PhysX. Which begs the question, how to I actually 'use' it on Linux? The Nvidia control app doesn't have any particular toggle...

Re: League of Legends trouble

Haven't played league but when I try to run Oblivion through wine, at times it would crash until I go in and change the screen resolution along with some graphics settings. It's really hard to pinpoint an issue based on what's given. Do you have the appropriate graphics drivers installed on the Linu...

It specifically says "audio driver". Considering they all ship with Windows, any Linux users need not to worry. If I'm not mistaken, everything just uses pulseaudio right?

Multiple simultaneous users on one desktop?

Where is a good place to start learning about running multiple simultaneous sessions from one desktop? Basically, I'm likely to be getting my hands on a Xeon rig, and I figured it'd be cool to hook several monitors, keyboards and mice into it for an all-in-one, multiplayer type of LAN party set up. ...

Re: ZDNet: why-windows-must-die-for-the-third-time

I doubt it's a personal attack on Google more than Windows RT 2.0. That being the case, Developers developers developers developers, or something. It won't get far. If people really wanted their apps on the Windows store, we'd have 3 competing mobile platforms instead of the current duopoly. I doubt...

Re: LTS 4.9 Kernel

Tries to be a different type of Linux? Look, if a team decides to use the Linux Kernel of their choosing and make a full fledged OS with it, you're stuck playing by their rules. If you don't like that, feel free to download Ubuntu Mini, Debian, or Arch and build your own distro. Nobody is stopping y...

Re: Substitute for Flash

Not that I know of. Most of the bad press Flash gets is less about spyware and more about just how horribly vulnerable it is. Most, if not ALL mobile OS developers just got rid of flash altogether. The big hope was HTML 5, but that fell flat on it's face because it wasn't as fast as everyone thought...

Google to dump Linux kernel with new mobile OS

So I read up on this here: http://bgr.com/2017/05/09/google-fuchsia-os-leaked-images/ However, this wasn't the first time I heard this news. I actually remember reading about this last year and dismissing it, but it seems like Google wants to separate itself from Linux. Do you all think this might i...

Re: A few "stupid" questions from complete newbie about a fresh install

Especially about swap files and SSD's. I'm not sure I understand the issue there. Since you seem to be interested in Cinnamon x64 version, I assume you have 4+GB RAM in that machine? If so, you probably don't need a swap partition at all. Waste of space, if you ask me. I have even moved Chrome's ca...

Re: How often to update the installation

My Linux experience isn't too far reaching, but I typically don't install new kernels. A kernel at its core is code that lets the software (Mint) talk to the hardware (computer). Considering all my stuff is working properly, I typically find no reason to install a newer kernel (especially since I ty...

Legacy wallpapers

I've been using Mint since 17.1 (I know, SOOOOOO long ago) and I remember it having some pretty cool wallpapers. As I'm typing this now on Mint 18.1 KDE, I'm noticing that a lot of my old favorites have been removed (the city skyline, the metallic-green with raindrops, etc). Is there some kind of an...
