Re: New to Linux - X Server won't start after fresh Mint + NVidia driver Install

MOST machines I've installed the drivers on work fine. However, I have one desktop that has this very issue: an AMD APU machine. I have an AMD A10 7700k with a GTX 570, and after installing the NVIDIA drivers, I couldnt get the thing to boot right. There's two ways to fix: 1. when you get to the GRU...

Re: New to Linux - Looking for Recommendations on Software

Jaydemir, Super helpful thanks! I will try BlueFish, based on your description it sounds exactly like what I want. Unfortunately EVE is not a spaceship shooter, there is no replacement for it but I'll worry about getting it installed on my own once I get the rest of the stuff working. Fair enough. ...

Re: New to Linux - Looking for Recommendations on Software

- Chrome has an installer for linux. When you download it, it automatically detects your OS and offers the appropriate .deb file. - HexChat is available for Mint by default on all desktop environments EXCEPT KDE (they have their own IRC app because they're special or something). I forgot HexChat eve...

Re: Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64-bit Freezes at least once a day!

In my experience, Mint 18.1 xfce has been the most stable for me, to the point where if I even install the Cinnamon desktop (apt-get install cinnamon), and log into the session, it still works flawlessly. I have had minor issues with Cinnamon 18.0, and haven't really gone back to try again since. Ob...

Windows comedy hour

So there's times having to deal with Windows is frustrating, but there's also times where Windows is just so darn broken that it's downright funny. This particular instance is happening as we speak. I'm trying to get an old Gaming PC ready for resale, and Windows has a feature to wipe the drive and ...

Re: Front loading everything into RAM

As the usb boots and you see the countdown screen press tab to get boot options, then press tab again to edit. Navigate to the words quiet splash using the arrow buttons. Backspace through 'quiet splash' and replace with 'toram' without the quotes. It will take a little longer to boot than normal--...

Front loading everything into RAM

So I'm thinking about making a minimal usb/cd distro using the Ubuntu mini base, strictly for personal use. Obviously, continual read/write from these means arent exactly the quickest. I'm aware some random distros just load the entire OS onto RAM so everything loads quick during use. Is there a spe...

Re: A small but controversial suggestion

Fair enough, the color 'mint' might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Still, even getting closer to the color on the actual plant would be more visually appealing than the current choice.

A small but controversial suggestion

So Linux Mint is awesome. It is. However, there is a design aesthetic that makes absolutely no sense to me: The particular shade of green. Upon a simple Google search, you can see what Mint green is 'supposed' to look like: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/3d/9e/c5/3d9ec57462be4aaebfc30daa0...

I appreciate the feedback for my rant. The Newegg thing was a good call.

I scored an amazing HP i7 refurb for less than an open box machine with lesser hardware.

Thanks!

Re: This is a wireless wifi adapter that works out of the box in Linux Mint!

I bought a cheap Ralink adapter years ago that works just fine on Linux.

TBH it isn't hard to find a wireless USB adapter that's Linux compatible considering the popularity of the Raspberry Pi. They're almost as plug-n-play as USB mice.

I avoid Lenovo laptops because I hear it's difficult to install Linux on them (something about the hard drive format. Don't remember exactly).

Laptops suck.

OK so I've been shopping around for a new laptop because I just want a bit more processing power than my t7200 can offer. Of course, I'm trying to spend the minimum because it isn't that much of an upgrade I need. My options all suck. 3 trips to best buy and I just don't want anything. Everything is...

Re: Installing Linux Mint 18.1 on Macbook Pro & Macbook

I have a 2006 MacBook (white plastic shell) that gave me a hard time installing anything. a. Nothing boots from USB b. I burnt cd images, and the only thing that booted was Mint 13 XFCE. Anything newer refused to work. What I ended up doing to get Mint 18.1 on this macbook was actually popping out t...

Re: Using a laptop in shell only

Sounds good. It shouldn't be too much of a difference between tty2 and 1 right? I changed a file to boot me into shell once but when I ran startx, my whole panel setup was set back to default I still plan on keeping the gui for the sake of videos and such, but other than that I can get work done in ...

Using a laptop in shell only

I'm just curious. I do want to force myself to get more accustomed to the terminal for general use.

My question: is there a significant improvement in battery life for my laptop if I just run Mint in the shell (ctrl all f1), or is it still running a whole bunch of stuff in the background anyway?

Re: WiFi stops working every once in a while

My Macbook 2006 has the same issue when I close and open the lid (although not consistent). I just run the command 'sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart' and it works fine. Other stuff does break, however, sometimes it's video playback, others it wont shut down unless I force it. A restart alway...

Re: Connecting Android

Which Android version? Usually Android devices are just plug-n-play, but my experience is only limited to stock devices and custom Roms (not Samsung so much). Your error sounds like you just don't have the right file option selected (there's MTP, photo and charge on the phone). Alternatively, you MI...
