Re: Enable Mint 17.3 XFCE system sounds

For anyone having a problem with this age old issue, i'll put all the steps required in one place to get system sounds working. That worked somewhat. Doing all that got the annoying click and "buthump" sounds on almost every click of the mouse on anything (sometimes more than one sound at a time), ...

Re: Enable Mint 17.3 XFCE system sounds

ByeByeXP, I did all the above in Mint 17.3 Xfce, except I set "/Net/SoundThemeName string value = freedesktop" because that is the sound theme in "/usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/". I also tried "default", and "LinuxMint" which also did not work. I still get absolutely not a single peep from an...

Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem

file-roller_3.10.2.1-0ubuntu4.1_amd64.deb will update it to a working version with no drastic changes. Also fixed is the problem of file-roller refusing to create an archive output to another folder other than where the files being archived are. Direct links to the files from archive.ubuntu.com than...

Re: Camera Kills my usb

My first thought was something to do with IOMMU, which gives me problems on my Gigabyte 970A-UD3P, but that is more to do with USB 3 and I'm guessing your board is not USB 3. I have to put "iommu=soft" in my grub config to get both usb 2 and 3 working. I'm assuming everything works fine until the ca...

Deborphan will break Totem (Videos)

Just a heads up. Deborphan will remove libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid and that will break Totem so that it will not start any more. I imagine someone forgot to declare a dependency or something. Now I am afraid to run deborphan (gtkorphan) at all for fear it will break something else too. I figured ...

Heck, I am on the other side of this fence. I wish they'd get rid of the bits and pieces of the DEs I don't even use. there's bit from Cinnmaon and KDE in my Xfce install!

Re: Is Thunar Stable in 17.3?

You can always get newer versions from PPAs. I've dabbled with a Manjaro and Xubuntu but always wind up back on Mint 17.x because something or another doesn't work on the other ones and I'll settle for older media players to have a working filesync tool or whatever else didn't work elsewhere.

Re: Is Thunar Stable in 17.3?

I'm not sure what determines if things are updated or not, but yeah, a lot of applications are quite old. Like VLC 2.1.6 and Audacious in the repo is from 2014? Pretty old. Even file-roller (archive manager) is a very old version, which wouldn't be bad except that it is a very broken version, and th...

Re: Which music player sounds the best?

Agreed on the 24 bit thing. I record in 24/48000, but when playing back a 24/48000 wav file, I can not tell any difference in that vs the same file converted to 16/44100, as long as it's not compressed. I find DeadBeef has just the right options settings that I want and none of the crowded UI. Audac...

Re: Is Thunar Stable in 17.3?

Hmmm. I've toyed with Xubuntu 15.10 and didn't notice anything (that doesn't mean much, I didn't use it more than a day or two). Maybe a program crash or two, but nothing major, nothing I don't get in Mint as well. I really liked the darker panel and whisker menu in Xubuntu though, instead of all th...

I just checked for updates and see chromium-browser and oxide-qt sitting there. Both show an old version and new version, but...um...I don't think they are even installed? They shouldn't be! Re: Which music player sounds the best?

To Quexos, You really wouldn't want a music player to be able to convert a WAV file to a FLAC file because that is not the function of music players. *snip* Oh, I know about all that...I think? DeadBeef, for example can convert file formats easy as right clicking them in the playlist, but I imagine...

Re: Is Thunar Stable in 17.3?

I have only had one oddity in two installs so far with my /home/username folder being root instead of user (on one of the installs), but I do not have a clue what caused that. If you can think of some things for me to do to test Thunar, I'm game, but so far it is behaving just like 17.2 did for me.

Or the Firefox addon "Video DownloadHelper". Some youtube videos fail with it though. Another method that worked for me where Video DownloadHelper failed is to use KeepVid.com. Re: Which music player sounds the best?

Thanks for the Audacious tips. I thought I'd give it a whirl and see if I like it more than DeadBeef. So far...maybe...good player, with just the right amount of features and not too bloated or overly "featured". The only thing I'm seeing so far that is missing or I just have not found yet, is conve...

Re: 17.3 xfce upgrade now available in Update Manager!

The ISO links are up now too! Here we go! I did the upgrade last night and it seemed to go smoothly. The kernel stayed at 3.16.x. and GIMP still reported 17.2 when booting (dual boot screen). I'm mostly done with a fresh DVD/ISO install on my backup/second PC and it is also going well so far. I'm an...

Re: make ISO image?

Depending on which flavor you have installed. Brasero (may already be installed) can do it. I use Xfce and it comes with Xfburn that is said to be better and/or more reliable and stable, but as far as I know, can not make an iso image, so I toss Brasero on for that job. It's in the repos. That is as...
