[Solved] Archive Manager (file-roller) Problems.

I'm running Mint 17.2 Xfce and it appears Archive Manager (file-roller) is the GUI for all the archiving stuff. I have a problem with it not being able to create an archive where I tell it to and am wondering if there is a fix/workaround for it. Example: Say I have a 20 gigabyte folder full of files...

Re: Xfce13 Can't Move Items in Panel?

Haha, yeah, I experimented with several distros and desk top environments, Cinnamon, two types of MATE, Xfce, and I started to get confused which options and behaviors are from which DE. I've decided I like Xfce the best now though, so getting pretty used to it and digging into it a bit more than th...

Re: Virus or Glitch?

It is becoming my 'old reliable' as well. I like it much better than Cinnamon or MATE. Cinnamon is a little crashy and just not quite to my liking, though it's not bad. MATE absolutely refuses to let me change the wallpaper without crashing the whole OS hard, rebooting, and then failing to boot back...

Re: Virus or Glitch?

I did get 17.2 Xfce installed with no problem. Ran the driver manager but it didn't offer anything, which is fine because everything is already working fine. Wireless connection, touchpad and all. If I remember correctly, it's just an onboard intel graphics chip. The lap top belongs to a relative, a...

Re: Xfce13 Can't Move Items in Panel?

there should be a separator (with expand box ticked) right in the middle of anything you want on the left and what you want on the right. The "expand" will make it push everything after it all the way to the right. Like so: Whisker Menu Launcher (terminal) Launcher (Thunar) Launcher (Firefox) Window...

Re: Change Desktop Background hangs in LinuxMint 17.1 MATE

In Mint MATE 17.3, I still have this problem. In my case, it is not just slow to respond, it will freeze, then completely crash the OS and reboot. Upon rebooting my bios reports a "Boot failure" and gives me options to enter bios, reload defaults, etc. Very, very bad bug...still. Update: since i del...

Re: Virus or Glitch?

That would not surprise me either, since it has that vertical line. Bad display/cable I assume. There was a bunch more text that continued scrolling at the bottom, repeating over time, something about "rem apple ][ screen saver" and a bunch of numbers and what appeared to be color settings. I am not...

Virus or Glitch?

A relative brought me their Asus Laptop to be repaired. It was Windows 7 and was infected with some nasties of unkown severity. I Looked at it enough to know it was malware/spyware/virus infected (it was screwed up too bad to do much else without much pointless cleaning), then shut it down and boote...

Re: Instruction on how to convert lossless .wma to .flac

Just FYI: If you want a music player like Foobar2000 on Linux, I've found DeadBeef to be the ticket, and it can convert formats by simple right click > convert. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:starws-box/deadbeef-player sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install deadbeef To add support for converting form...

Re: Media Player classic or similar Media player for Mint?

I'll second the VLC Player suggestion. I like MPC-HC a lot better, but VLC is as close as I've seen to it on Linux. For music, I really like DeadBeef. A very Foobar2000 like music player. To get it: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:starws-box/deadbeef-player sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install deadb...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I am judging it from it's current state. In the past I got to the desktop and that was it. Now I am starting to dig into it a bit more, now that most things work well out of the box without compiling your own drivers and the like. It's pretty darned solid these days, except for a few things. Bluray,...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

Much (most?) of the blame on that one goes to whoever built your computer. Some hardware works better - and has better support/drivers - under linux than other hardware. (And then there's the class of hardware that has a "Made for Windows™" sticker on the package  ...) I, err, believe that in...

Re: Nvidia GTX 950 (no driver)

You're right about that. The drivers direct from Nvidia failed hard, and so did all the tips in tutorials that I read on how to get them to work. This is a fresh install, with a full backup image before the risky stuff, and the graphics-drivers ppa did not work (broken dependency) until after I used...

(solved) Nvidia GTX 950 (no driver)

EDIT: Disregard, there is a driver in the repo now. I recently got myself a new GTX 950, but can not find any way to get a driver installed. Mint's Driver Manager is completely empty. No Nouveau or Nvidia drivers shown. So I tried the following: 1. Download from Nvidia and use their instructions = E...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

Hi Quexos, Here is some more music and audio information. Excellent stuff. Thanks again. I will definitely look into it again soon. I can't now because I just got a GTX 950 and there is no Mint driver yet to my knowledge, software mode only (PCLinuxOS won't even boot with it, just halts on a black ...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I too could go on and on about how wonderful Linux Mint is... Hahaha, so could I...in spite of my last post. I could go on even more about what I hate about Windows, but sadly, it does the things I NEED. There are many, many things I really like about Linux. A lot of the "problems" I have with it a...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I don't do any music recording or production but Macs seem to be popular for audio and video. Have you tried a Mac? No. Too expensive, and I always build my own (and everyone I know) PCs. I've never bought a brand name PC. Never saw any advantage to going with Apple stuff. I still dual boot Linux a...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...

I am not resisting the change, but trying like heck to get to it. I would love nothing more than to completely dump Windows, and have been trying out Linux off and on for probably 10 years waiting/hoping for the day. It is getting better, but there are still many things preventing me from fully swit...
