Re: Linux Mint 18 Working on Chuwi Hi12 Tablet PC 64 Bit Cherry Trail Quad Core

Check out Linuxium's latest blog posts. Specifically about the Realtek RTL8723BS wifi NIC which I think your tablet uses. And also the second post that tells how you can build a custom ISO. This might allow you to create a custom Ubuntu live-USB using the very latest Kernel (4.11 or 4.12?). It could...

[SOLVED] excessively slow startup > 3 mins in "userspace"

I have had this problem for a long time, many kernels have been installed/removed since. I think this problem was caused by Grub Customizer which I no longer use. How do I understand what/why 3 minutes is being used in "userspace"? ideas? How can I capture more detailed logs? brad@G50 ~ $ systemd-an...

Re: Laptops suck.

Laptops are the bomb. Especially gently used Thinkpads. Yes, Lenovo. I know. :P I avoid Lenovo laptops because I hear it's difficult to install Linux on them (something about the hard drive format. Don't remember exactly). I have two Lenovos with LM 17.3 (Xfce and Cinnamon) and both works very well...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

To be honest I find XFCE something from the past. Plasma 5 is sparkling, it is shining, the programs delivered with it work great. Take for example Dolphin the file-manager. Superior to all others. You can configure it just the way you want it, it has double panels which make it very easy to move o...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

My partitions: 30 GB Arch (the boot is here) 30 GB Debian 30 GB Manjaro 400 GB data 10 GB swap. I guess a backup OS will never hurt anyone. :) Note: during Manjaro install, I chose manual partitioning as always. True, but on the other hand I have a full backup of my Manjaro setup and place it back ...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

I hit a problem installing multi-boot of Manjaro 17.0 Xfce along side Linux Mint Mate 18.1 - a Grub incompatibility problem between Mint and Manjaro that I think is fairly well known now on the Manjaro forum... https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=228974&start=40#p1289548 True. I also ...

Re: What other distros have you played with recently?

Manjaro. Why? It is fast: ... Very happy I discovered Manjaro and took the plunge. Yep, Manjaro is a super-nice distro. :) Personal opinion question here, DeMus. I've used Manjaro and Arch several times over the past years, but I've always shied away from sticking with 'em long-term for a few naggi...

Re: Can't suspend/hibernate while using NVIDIA Driver Version:367.57

I have had the same probem for a long time and gave up looking for a solution. I think, but not sure, that the problem is an update of the BIOS that Lenovo did around mid-year in 2015 that broke it on the most recent kernels. A long time ago on older versions of Linux Mint it used to work. I suppose...

Re: [SOLVED] Please HELP me create a Live USB Mint 18 MATE with persistence

Below pic is what my 32GB USB drive looked like on Gparted after the Manjaro 17 install - and after I shrunk the swap partition from the 8GB partition the installer created... [Edit:] FYI, word of warning ... It works without issues installing onto an external USB drive, and does not touch your exis...

Re: [SOLVED] Please HELP me create a Live USB Mint 18 MATE with persistence

Guys I fought with this for a while. My latest attempt with Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce - it corrupted my SSD grub file even though I told the installer to install onto the USB drive. There is a bug there. Anyway, the short answer is to try Manjaro 17 Xfce . I think you will like it. It has a completely si...

Re: an alternative to Mint for a *netbook*?

Elt, I just installed the latest distro of Manjaro Linux Xfce 17.0 (kernel 4.9) on an 8GB USB stick and it works just fine on my Lenovo notebook. USB 3.0 recommended. Finally a version of Linux that runs well from a USB thumb drive! Easy to install (though requires two USB drives - one for ISO/insta...

Re: Please help - Grub repair v18.1 Win10 dual boot.

So I would think that grub-install would need to determine which partition is the boot partition before it can install. And since I did not specify which sda1-sda6 but only told it "sda" I am guessing it looks at which partition is marked with the 'boot' flag (boot partition) and installs there. No...

Re: Please help - Grub repair v18.1 Win10 dual boot.

Hi, I have a Windows8.1/Mint 18.1 MATE dual boot using EFI. There are topics that advise to install grub in the EFI partition (in your case /dev/sda2) instead of the disk (so not as you did on /dev/sda). I followed that advise and that works and shows Mint 18.1 and the Windows Boot Manager as a boo...

Re: possible to clean out "grub customizer" changes?

The bits in /etc/grub.d/ come from the grub-common package. Wouldn't clearing out that directory and then reinstalling grub-common with the right dpkg switches (--force-confmiss and/or --force-confnew if I'm not mistaken) get rid of anything grub-customizer did? After that, an update-grub (possibly...

possible to clean out "grub customizer" changes?

I have read that it is not recommended to use the Grub Customizer app because it greatly complicates your Grub setup and potentially messes things up and the effects/changes are not restored upon un-installing it. Is there a way to reset one's Grub configuration completely back to post-fresh-install...
