Re: Getting a new 2 in 1 in a couple months. Touch-screen, can fold into a tablet, etc. Can Linux Mint make full use of

Linux Mint 19.1 has supported touch screen, backlit keyboard with the usual functions on Yoga laptop. You will have to install it on your machine to test. I wasn't (mostly) asking about hardware support. For example, in Windows, I can (theoretically, as I don't have the machine here to test) open u...

Getting a new 2 in 1 in a couple months. Touch-screen, can fold into a tablet, etc. Can Linux Mint make full use of it?

Current Linux Mint 19.1 user, on my desktop. OneMix will soon release a pretty powerful 8.4" UMPC that I want. Nice bright 2K screen and backlit keyboard, fingerprint sensor, Intel Core m3-8100Y, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD, M.2/42mm SATA3 expansion, USB 3 and C ports, pressure-sensitive drawing...

Re: Firefox 67 and widevinecdm - Crash!

Hm, Widevinecdm seems to have a long history of mal-functioning and causing problems, at least based on the hits returned by a Google search. Anyway. I could imagine that in the current case, the problem is the one found in this Launchpad bug report: firefox plugin libwidevinecdm.so crashes due to ...

When I try, I get a yellow bar at the top of my screen stating that widevinecdm has crashed. Over and over.
Is the error message actually
"The WidevineCdm plugin has crashed"
?

Firefox 67 and widevinecdm - Crash!

Greetings. I was trying to uninstall un-necessary media codecs (like flash, along with java), and I think that I may have accidentally uninstalled something that the DRM depends on to play content on sites like Amazon Video. When I try, I get a yellow bar at the top of my screen stating that widevin...

Re: Please help me choose a backup solution that meets my needs

Thanks for the recommendations. In large part due to choice overload (and clonezilla not even being an option unless I reboot my system every time I want to back up an image with it, plus having to have it explained via YouTube), I have decided just to stick with Timeshift and the built-in mintbacku...

Re: Is my SSD going bad, or is this normal for its age?

Thanks. I guess I'll try not to worry too much, and keep looking for a backup solution that suits my needs. Re: Is my SSD going bad, or is this normal for its age?

Sorry, that was a reply to lsemmens. That link is about magnetic drives, not SSDs, where it shows that SMART is not reliable early indicator for drive failure (making argument again for backups). Personally I'd not throw the SSD away for this one warning. I'd do what I said earlier; ensure good bac...

Are you trying to say that the SMART failure in my drive should be something to worry about, or not?

Please help me choose a backup solution that meets my needs

I have my drives laid out thusly: - 1 TB SSD. Main OS drive. Has /home and all applications on it. I am the only user. Whole installation is encrypted. - 4 TB HDD. Data drive. Has all my files. - 8 TB HDD. I want this drive to back up the first two. I'd like there to be a way to backup (and restore....

Re: Is my SSD going bad, or is this normal for its age?

Yeah, I'm still trying to understand Timeshift, as far as backups. I want an automatic way to back up the complete contents (home for all users and programs, etc) on my main 1 TB SSD, plus the entire contents of my 4 TB data drive, all compressed and put on my 8 TB backup drive. I had that running u...

Is my SSD going bad, or is this normal for its age?

What does "Pre-Fail" mean? That it has, or that if anything is there, the drive should be replaced? Etc.

Thanks!

<SOLVED> sudo update-grub frozen?

Solved: When GParted finished applying operations, "sudo update-grub" appeared to finish. I ran it again, just to be sure, and rebooted to test. There appeared to be no issues. Re: Unknown boot loop - Get a brief error, then reboots

How can I test my SSD (main drive, 1 TB, a Samsung 840 EVO from late 2014) to see how it's doing? The last time I was in Windows and ran the manufacturer-provided Magician software, the drive was fine. It's also nowhere near full, nor has it ever been (more than half the space is available), so its ...

Unknown boot loop - Get a brief error, then reboots

Linux Mint 19.1 x64, Cinnamon. First, my UEFI settings have not been changed for quite some time, and the system was operating normally.. until today, when I rebooted normally from inside the GUI. Instead of being taken to my disk encryption unlock screen, I got this message on-screen for about half...

Re: "The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package' failed to install into /target/."

Thanks, but way too complex for me. First, I'm confined to a wheelchair, and my computer case sits near the floor in a small carrier. To get it on the table/open it for upgrades, I have to get a friend to come over after we both have free time from work. Second, I installed Xububtu 16.04.2 LTS with ...

"The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package' failed to install into /target/."

I have googled, and any solutions I found, such as setting up my own partitions by hand, have failed with the same error message. For example, this was recommended in a similar thread. http://www.tecmint.com/install-linux-mint-17/ - It did not work for me. - Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon x64 "Serena". - ...

Re: Mouse stuttering or lagging, help please.

Just a quick update. After installing hwinfo and running it, I got the ID of my touchpad, and put it into Google. From my limited knowledge, it appears that a kernel update has somehow messed up support for it?
