Re: Kernels and Video Drivers?

I think I'm ok. According to: inxi -Sxx System: Host: dave-mint17-3 Kernel: 4.4.0-31-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 4.8.4) Desktop: Cinnamon 2.8.8 (Gtk 3.10.8~8+qiana) dm: mdm Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa the kernel is compiled with gcc 4.8.4 (agreeing with cat /proc/version) and I've got that installe...

Re: Kernels and Video Drivers?

I found one of the posts I had seen earlier talking about this: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/67633-Kernel-4-4-in-Linux-Mint-17-3-x64-installation-error/page4?p=1206210&viewfull=1#post1206210 Secondly, when you upgrade to kernel 4.4/5, you need to upgrade to gcc 5.3. 5.2 is bad. Because I...

Kernels and Video Drivers? [SOLVED]

I just saw the following blurb on Clem's "Monthly News - August 2016" article: After installing a new kernel, both the previous and the new kernels are installed. Your proprietary drivers (if any) are compiled against the new kernel... I'm not sure what he means by "proprietary drivers." On the vide...

Re: How to tell why freezes happen?

If you're on Mint 18, try opening a Terminal window and typing:

Code: Select all

journalctl
I'm not sure if it has to be sudo or not. But, that's the combined log journal that's part of the systemd thing they're using now.

Re: Code for Cinnamon applets?

I'm mostly clueless about this, but could the sound setting app be part of Cinnamon, itself? I did a search on Cinnamon's Github page and it looks like it's possible:

Re: Bind Doesn't Work with Samba/Cics? [SOLVED?]

I'm looking through that other link. Thanks. I also started looking at journalctl for systemd messages. I rebooted, did: sudo journalctl -b and found: Jul 24 17:06:45 dave-mint systemd-fstab-generator[1056]: Checking was requested for "//192.168.1.222/home", but it is not a device. Jul 24 17:06:45 d...

Re: Bind Doesn't Work with Samba/Cics? [SOLVED?]

Unfortunately, Mint 18 doesn't reliably mount my NAS (and all those BINDs) via the FSTAB upon booting (heck, once it didn't even mount the 2nd internal SATA SSD (my data drive). Even the BINDs are having issues. Once, even though the NAS had mounted and 2 of the 3 BINDs worked correctly, for some re...

Under Settings -> Windows -> Behavior -> Moving and Resizing Windows, try the Automatic setting (sounds like yours is set for Center).

What Are the 5 Green/White Dots During Startup?

Maybe it's a configuration difference. But, with Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon x64, I get five dots during startup that change between white and green. I didn't get those with Mint 17.x. Are those dots supposed to mean something? Or, are they just a random "I'm working" signal to us?

What to do with quasi-duplicates in Boot Order? [OBE]

EDIT (FINAL): I guess this has now been Overcome By Events (OBE). I downloaded, installed, and ran boot-repair from my Live disk and had it get rid of the Secure Boot option and generally fix things. The result seems to be that all that's left of my boot entries is (what was) Boot0006 and Boot0000 f...

Re: Kern.log Has a Lot of "UFW Block" Entries

Odd. I would have expected the Firewall application under Start | Preferences to have a simple option to allow local traffic through. But, I can't see it. So, after searching the internet, it looks like I want: sudo ufw allow in on eno1 from 192.168.1.0/24 to any Usually that "eno1", above, is shown...

That's pretty much what I thought. I guess I should just unblock all the local stuff.

Thanks.

Kern.log Has a Lot of "UFW Block" Entries

I've got a new, clean install of Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon x64. I turned on the UFW firewall at its Basic level (deny all incoming/allow all outgoing). I just took a look at my kern.log file and see that about every 10 seconds my TiVo or my Roku attempt to connect to my computer. I don't want that log ...

Well, Cinnamon is still on my system. But, looking at the list you provided, it seems that it wants to remove two packages with Cinnamon in the name, but update a bunch of Cinnamon-type packages.

Re: Re-install After Disabling Secure Boot?

The only thing I could find for forcing the re-installation of packages was: sudo apt-get install --reinstall packagename But, that's only applicable on a per-package basis. Everything I could find said that I shouldn't try forcing things to re-install all the packages that way. So, since my clean i...

GLib-CRITICAL Errors

I keep seeing these GLib-CRITICAL errors (and the org.freedesktop.... error) in my Syslog. Being clueless, I don't know if there's something I need to do to fix this or if it's normal. Any ideas? mdm[3551]: GLib-CRITICAL: g_key_file_get_string: assertion 'key_file != NULL' failed mdm[3551]: GLib-CRI...

Unable to Detect Character Encoding in Kern.log

I used Nemo to browse to /var/log, double-clicked on kern.log to view it, and got the following:

"Could not open the file /var/log/kern.log
xed has not been able to detect the character encoding..."

Is that normal? Should I delete kern.log and let the system re-create it?

Re-install After Disabling Secure Boot?

I've been seeing some odd behavior with Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon x64. So, I finally decided to turn off Secure Boot in my BIOS. Now that Secure Boot is off, should I re-install Mint? Or, will the mere change of Secure Boot's state "fix" anything that wasn't working because of it? And, here's another s...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 18 - 64bit - Cinnamon - Black Screen on login

Looks like I'm in the same boat. I had Secure Boot on when I installed Mint 18 (just like I did with 17.x). I've disabled it now just in case that was the cause.
