Timeshift: should these patterns be excluded in snapshots?

Hi all. I've just installed LM 19 and now I would like to properly configure Timeshift. I am no expert so I can't figure out how the following settings can affect the chance of a succesful restoration of my system should it go bananas: TS-exclude-patterns.png Can you please give me advice? And what'...

Seamonkey 2.49.3 doesn't send emails (smtp server)

Hi guys. I'm running LM 18.1 Cinnamon 64 bit. I need to use a second email client alongside Thunderbird. I've just installed Seamonkey 2.49.3 and I'm 100% sure it is properly configured. I can receive emails, but I can't send them. When I try to do that a popup window is telling me that: Sending of ...

Same PC, 2 Dropbox versions???

Hi. LM 18 Cinnamon on my laptop. I use Dropbox, installed via Mint's Package manager and I have two users on my system. When I log in as user A Dropbox shows version number 48.4.58 and it is working fine. When I log in as user B Dropbox version is 35.4.20 and it is no longer synching my files. Synch...

[Solved] DIN Is Noise: can someone help me install it?

Hi. DIN Is Noise is an open source software musical instrument that I really would like to try. It is in Ubuntu's (17.10) repos so I think it should work in LM too but I can't make it run. This piece of software comes as tar.gz archive containing a README file stating: To build DIN Is Noise for 64-b...

Thank you, catweazel!
It works :D but I'm not sure I understand your statement:

To increase the amount of host RAM allocated to the VM's video driver, not actual video memory
Can you explain that?

[Solved] Virtual Box: how to increase maximum video memory?

Hi guys. I run VBox 5.2.8 on my LM 18 Cinnamon laptop. The laptop has an integrated Intel graphic chipset and an additional Nvidia GT 635M card with 2 GB memory. I've set up my system so that Nvidia is the default chipset (with proprietary driver in use). Now, VBox allows me to set a maximum of 128 ...

How to execute sudo command in terminal window at startup

Hi all. When I log into my user's account on LM 18 Xfce I would like a terminal window to open up and have a certain sudo command typed. I WANT to type in my password every single time to execute the sudo command, I'm not looking for a "sudo-with-no-password" solution. In the startup menu ...

Re: aggiornare filezilla

Where is audio settings in Mint 18 Xfce?

Hi all. My laptop's sound output is a bit low. I already raised the volume to maximum using [fn key] + [volume up key] but I think that some system preference is keeping it below 100%. The problem is that I can't find an audio manager or something related to speakers in the menu  On another ma...

Re: Screensaver gets stuck switching between sessions

Thanks Pjotr.
I use LM at work and often I have multiple windows open and applications running at the same time, so the ability to switch between sessions without stopping what I am doing would be of great help to me.
Anyway, without a proper solution I'll just follow your advice. :)

safety of sudo apt-get upgrade vs. update manager

Hi.
If I run in terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
I get updates for every installed package on my system.
Could this operation potentially introduce errors a/o vulnerabilities in comparison to using the update manager, which I've set up to install only updates of level 1 - 3?

Re: BIOS lost after install + no boot device found

Hi guys, thanks for your precious suggestions. It turned out to be just a matter of hitting a different F-key: I can't understand why it has changed from F12 to F2  There is a specific info in the BIOS about the F12 key but now it just don't work anymore. Not a problem since I can access BIOS...

Swap automatically encrypted in LM18 Xfce?

Hi. I've just installed LM18 Xfce 64bit with an encrypted home partition + 2GB swap. I wanted to encrypt the swap partition too so I ran sudo ecryptfs-setup-swap but I got the following messages: WARNING: [/dev/dm-0] already appears to be encrypted, skipping. WARNING: There were no usable swap devic...

Re: BIOS lost after install + no boot device found

I don't think it's BIOS that's giving you the message, rather you need a partition marked bootable on your hard drive [where you install grub] =H Hi hinto. I've tried to 1) Make a custom partitioning with efi + / + home + swap 2) Make a default install overwriting previous partitions but I get the ...

Hi. I have an Acer Aspire One Cloudbook on which I previously installed LM17.3 Cinnamon and it was working well. Today I tried to do a clean install of LM18 Xfce but something went wrong. Re: Why does everything want to disable secure boot?

Does secure boot make a linux machine more "secure" too?
I just disabled it yesterday on my mini-laptop (which was meant to be running Windows 10) and now at boot I get a brief message stating "booting in insecure mode".
