Re: is the linux desktop environment still going the directi

Well, I could imagine some new users or people interested in Linux being quite overwhelmed considering how many choices and customization options there are regarding Linux desktops.. It might be more beneficial to focus development on the existing desktops instead of forking them over and over or bu...

Depends. That might be true for a low-end or mediocre processor, whereas a state of the art processor from that period could still be useful today.

Re: can't download games because of very bad connection

Well, maybe you could ask a friend with a faster internet connection if you can download the games unto a usb stick at his place?
Or perhaps there is a possibility to download your games in a university or internet café?

Re: Saying NO to forced W10---the Microsoft way

But for how long? Just wait for July then upgrades will stops by itself. What after? I suggest you will go to shop and purchase W10 (sooner or later). But this time for your own money. Well, Windows 7 is supported 'till 2020, so there's absolutely no need to "upgrade" to Win 10 any time s...

Re: Linux Foundation offers Free SysAdmin Tutorial

It worked with the second email address... This is very strange...
Or maybe it is because I used Chrome now instead of Firefox?

Anyway, I've received the first part of the tutorial ("Editing text files on the command line"). It's rather concise but contains useful information. :)

Re: Linux Foundation offers Free SysAdmin Tutorial

Thanks a lot for providing additional information, jimallyn. I've signed up for the course a couple of hours ago and I was told that a download link had been sent to my e mail address, but so far I haven't received anything. Well, maybe they need to validate my registration first to ensure it's legi...

I'd recommend the "Dash to dock" extension.. (you can add and remove extensions using the gnome tweak tool).

Have fun. :)

Re: Ubuntu 15.10 Gnome

I had already tried out GNOME for a couple of hours some months ago but I didn't like it too much (used Cinnamon and KDE before). Last week I thought I should give it another chance so I installed Arch with the latest GNOME 3. After getting accustomed to it and installing some useful extensions it h...

Re: OpenSUSE Leap and Fedora Workstation

@Fragezeichen I was talking Linux in general. You have to understand that, unlike Windows, Linux is highly inhomogeneous. There are different distributions for different purposes. There are some that are more user-friendly and some that need some manual tweaking. As far as the "easier" di...

Re: OpenSUSE Leap and Fedora Workstation

Fonts, DPI scaling, drivers, games, fonts are one of those issues Fonts? Look pretty good by default in Linux Mint and LMDE2. On top of that you can even install the Microsoft fonts. Drivers? Unless you have some really odd hardware, everything usually tends to work quite well on Linux Mint. And if...

Re: OpenSUSE Leap and Fedora Workstation

I've been using Cinnamon on Mint for a wee while now, and it's good an' all, but now I'm keen to give Gnome 3 a bash. I know Gnome 3 has been getting a lot of flak for the total change in paradigm, but y'see, I'm one of those weirdos who actually liked the Windows 8 Start menu *gasp!* Gnome 3 looks...

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu - Why Mint?

Yes, but that's because of aggressive expansion and heavy investments. Amazon was also making losses in the last years because of expansion and investments, but you can't deny they are a big company with strong financial means. Apart from that, Mark Shuttleworth still has a net worth of $500 million...

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu - Why Mint?

You seem to have a deep insight in the financials of Canonical. Would you care to share your knowledge about the huge profits they supposedly make on desktop Linux? Only provable facts please, no wild guesses. Use what you want. But the Mint project is more than LMDE. Their revenue in 2013 was US$6...

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu - Why Mint?

This is becoming a weird semantics issue.... You say: Ubuntu is *forced* to give back, so Ubuntu doesn't *really* give back. That doesn't make any sense to me. Forced or not: Ubuntu gives back a lot. That's what counts. Period. Please stop bashing Ubuntu and be grateful that Ubuntu exists. ...
