Re: Why I'm sticking with Linux Mint

Also I test other distro's a lot, just looking at Distrowatch and reading the stories about the latest updates which are announced there. Then thinking O, that one could be nice. So download it, copy a Virtualbox template to make a new machine with all the right settings and set it up. Then, sooner ...

Always had the blue theme already. I'm a blue guy so it fits me. Also I am using the KDE version of Mint which is ... blue.

I also had a (1) on the tab when I wrote the question. Didn't get any notification at that time.

Question about tabs when using Mint forums

Hi, I just noticed that I have some new texts in the tabs about the website when I use the Mint forums.

What do the numbers at the beginning of the tab name mean, what do they stand for?
Anyone an idea?

Re: KDE 17.3 Rosa - Slow boot with network

Hi, some installations ago I also had this problem, booting took a really long time. Found out it had to do with the order in which hosts are found. On this page http://www.tldp.org/LDP/solrhe/Securing-Optimizing-Linux-RH-Edition-v1.3/chap9sec92.html a sample is shown for the /etc/host.conf file. I ...

Re: Mint Hack Donation thread!

Is that including the €100 I donated, even though I am not so fond of using Paypal.
Please try to find other ways we can donate money.
Thank you.

Re: Donations by mail

I have had e-mail contact with Mint about this, telling them I do want to make a donation (€100) but not using Paypal. This is the answer: Anyway, unfortunately we can only use Paypal for donations. It's not easy to turn down money but each transaction has to be processed both to acknowledge that he...

Change doors with windows and it is even funnier.

Re: Mint Hack Donation thread!

Donated €100 last year and want to do the same now, but I don't want to use Paypal. I wrote Mint about it to ask if there are other ways to pay, but no answer yet. I simply don't see why someone wants to use an external company to get payments when you know this company also needs to live and wants ...

So, I am not the only one who does not want to use Paypal. Just visited the donations page and Paypal is the only option there, besides Bitcoins and mintcoins. How to donate if Paypal is no option for us?

Re: XFE, 'X File Explorer' works strangely

Just of curiosity: why do you want to use this file-manager? I installed in a virtual machine and worked a little with it but it looks very old fashion, something from Windows 95. I chose to see large icons (which are not that large btw) and got them vertically organized, although the setting said r...

Re: Booting Linux Mint 17.3

Hello, I've been away from Linux for several years and frankly, I am at loss. I have a XFX 790i Ultra SLI motherboard that was not being use for anything so I decided to re- acquaint myself with one of the newer Linux distros. I choose Rosa as my distro. It seems that I can boot up the MB with the ...

Re: Memory and swap-memory use

Thanks guys, I would have expected that with lower memory needs, after a large memory need, the first thing which would be freed would be swap, but reading your answers I started thinking about it and yes, your ways make more sense. Reason for my way of seeing things is that real memory is much fast...

Memory and swap-memory use

Hi, I just did a test to see how far I can fill up my RAM memory before swap kicks in. I have 16GB of ram and did not set vm.swappiness, in other words it is still at 60. The test I did existed of starting virtual machines with which I increased the amount of used RAM. At one moment I saw this: snap...

Re: Why Linux Mint seems more User-Friendly than Ubuntu?

Their UI is touch screen monitor oriented, tablet oriented, hight DPI monitors oriented. Imagine how will look Mate on 4K monitor or how to use it on tablet. So, Unity and Gnome3 is not such stupid things as it looks at first glance. It is necessity. Necessity on a tablet or phone maybe, not on a n...

Re: Reinstall

It depends how you have setup your present installation. Do you have a separate /home partition you are in luck because then you can keep all your documents, music, videos, etc. To find out what you have now is easy: Open a terminal type more /etc/fstab You will now see a list of partitions and the ...

Re: Computer related jokes

BTW: found this out from personal experience. The seatback displays for both Delta and Virgin Australia Airlines run Linux--IIRC it's Red Hat. I did too but on another airline, forgot which one it was. Something went wrong and they had to reset the terminal, which is not good. You should never ever...
