Ah yes, thank you, that was the word. I knew my version didn't sound quite right.
Anyway, now that you've found us, you may over time become your own 'friend who's good with computers'. :D

Re: Why did 17.3 Cinnamon not create the std directories?

Your friend seems rather opiniated! If he cares so much about having a separate /home partition, he should have taken the time to set one up. Personally I prefer it that way too, and while i do agree that it would be a great option or even default to have in the installer, it's perfectly possible to...

Re: Antivirus Linux Mint

No one is an idiot for wanting information. But some people can be called idiots, or at the very least bullheaded, for asking for information, getting that information, and then not using it. My computer runs the programs that I see a need for. It's my computer after all. In my case I don't see runn...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

What I would like to know is what made you pick Linux Mint and not Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Subuntu, Rubuntu, Tubuntu, Makulu, etc., etc. Well, that's easily explained in my case: I was interested in switching to Linux, for all the reasons mentioned above  So I started doing some re...

Re: F.lux / fluxgui - Blue Light Filter for night veiwing

I then installed once more through the Software Manager: Search for F.lux or fluxgui and install from the results. I tried that but I did not get any results so I could not install from them. I'm still wondering why your software manager finds it and mine does not. Is that because you added the rep...

17.3 Rosa with which desktop environment? Cinnamon, Mate, KDE or Xfce? That information is often useful too, so you might as well just mention it right away.

Sorry, it doesn't answer your question, but I'm wondering how you managed to install it in the first place... My software manager doesn't offer anything of the sort.

What j03k3rr said. And you can probably find the shortcuts for your newly installed software in the 'Other' category.

Re: Ignorance is Not Bliss - Storing users data -why??

I discovered in .cache, a dir called thumbnails that seemed to house / store every freaking image i have or ever looked at, including every book cover I have in Calibre. What is the purpose of this? I'm pretty sure these thumbnails are cached so that they can quickly be shown to you in your file ma...

Roundup of video editors

The Register features a nice roundup of video editing applications that are available on Linux:

Hello, and welcome! Yes, that is a kind of problem that we often see here in the forums: us former Windows users often make things too difficult for ourselves because we simply cannot believe that Mint already offers what we are looking for.
Glad you figured it out, and happy Minting!

So... this elegant menu that would not make you want to vomit. What would that look like? What features do you think it needs? Mine already has 'text to describe quick-launch icons', so that can't be it. Which one are you actually using, since you literally can't use the Cinnamon menu, and why is it...

Honestly, if something that's not even a part of the OS bothers you so much that you want to stop using the OS over it, then I don't understand that at all but I hope you'll be happier with a different OS.

Re: mint 13 installer mouse freezes at welcome screen

If I were you, I'd try the newest version. Mint 17.3 is supported until 2019. Mate is probably a suitable desktop environment for your computer. Cinnamon might be asking a little bit much. And if you suspect that the mouse might be a problem, it's easily swapped for a different one to test your theo...
