thanx again for the reply Austin texas, I corrected my setup and ran sudo apt-get update and it gave me a few error's, I tried going to the sites in my browser and sent a ping in the terminal, nothing :? I had a similar issue with 17.3 cinnamon and 17.2 XFCE, when I would shut down mint after my pc turned off a few seconds later it would power right back on :x the only thing I could do to break the cycle was to "restart" my pc and when it reached the bios I would hold down the power button hard kill...

it's been a few day's now since reinstalling and everything is still running smooth so I guess it really is the updates that was messing up mint :?

yeah I did that, and I removed it from the authenticated list in the the software sources as well, rebooted and tried again and I still have the same updates available, don't know if this is relevant to the issue but when I restarted my pc it failed to reboot giving me this error "could not write by...

mint 13 xfce requires 384 MB of RAM or more,
mint 17.2 xfce requires 512 MB of RAM or more ,

could it be that after installing all the updates for 13, 13 becomes as demanding as 17.2 since it's a "LTS"?,
I don't think that would explain the CPU being maxed or the HDD activity being so high :?

The place to start is more ram. You can get 2GB IBM Lenovo DDR2-667 DIMM memory for that for about $26 on ebay.
