Re: USB not listed in Devices

So now the USB on Mint Cinnamon 17.3 does show up under Devices after installing Mint MATE 19.1 on the USB. I've had to use Mint Cinnamon 19 "Make bootable USB". The 3 previous iso before MATE 19.1 would not show up under Devices on 17.3 but now this one does. I've never had a problem in 3 years unt...

Re: Some content Won't play in browser

Have a look here - It is likely that version 70 of libffmpeg is needed for opera 57. https://forums.opera.com/topic/23908/just-about-all-videos-won-t-play/60 Thanks for the heads up. Mint 17.3 is still using Chromium 65. I just downloaded Chromium on Mint 19.1 and it's version 71. I guess I can pur...

Re: Some content Won't play in browser

Last time I had this issue it was that Flash was blocked and Opera couldn't ship with a certain library (libffmpeg) that would decode the video. The way round it is it get the version of libffmpeg.so that chrome uses (you may need to install Chrome or Chromium) and copy the libffmpeg.so to /usr/lib...

USB not listed in Devices

In Mint Cinnamon 17.3 one of my USB no longer will show up under Devices in the home folder area. Inserting and removing the USB does play the appropriate sound to indicate it's recognized at some level. The USB contains a new OS to install. If I switch OS to Mint Cinnamon 19 the same USB does show ...

Installing Mint on secondary drive

A family member is using Win 10 on HDD but would like to try out Mint. I suggested getting a secondary drive, a SSD to keep the two OS's separate. The computer is about 4 years old, but at this time I don't know if it uses BIOS or UEFI. I would install Mint to the SSD and set the bios to boot from i...

Re: Not sure on Partitioning

Perhaps I should have posed the wording differently upon further analysis. Once I am in the partitioning window can I decrease the available Free space given to Windows and give it to the Linux partition without losing any of the Windows data? Also when I reboot Linux Mint from my USB drive into Li...

Re: Best Mint Edition for older laptops..?

If you're running a dual-core 1.8 Ghz with 3 Gig Ram then Cinnamon might be a stretch depending on what you're doing. It would probably be ok if you didn't open too many tabs when web browsing. My processor is the same speed but I have 4 Gigs of Ram and Cinnamon runs fine. You can always have a part...

Re: Updater not working

That sounds to be what's happened, but other my other two Linux machines haven't been effected. But worth a try - how do I switch it back on? Click on the User icon at bottom right. Click on System Settings. Under "Preferences" there is "Applets". Near the bottom of the list is "System Tray". Singl...

Re: VLC - Can't read NTFS partition [SOLVED]

The only way for me to get VLC to play files from a different partition is to use "Media", then "Open File" or "Open Directory" and find the files to load in to VLC. The song(s) will start to play immediately and will be on the Playlist. Unfortunately it won't save the Playlist and this has to be do...

Re: opml file ??? [SOLVED]

I hadn't used Firefox in a few weeks but kept up with the updates and now have version 64. It certainly did place an opml file on my desktop and also created a new tab with some sort of advertisement. I closed the tab and shut off the browser. I then opened Firefox again and it gave me another new t...

Re: Firefox Address Bar

I agree with AZgl1500

In fact, Opera and Chromium are the opposite. A single click highlights the entire web address on those 2 web browsers and I'm not sure how to reverse it.

Re: Updater not working

The last time my kernel was updated, my Update Manager shield disappeared from the system tray. I finally figured out that the System Tray applet had been turned off for some reason. I was able to get the shield back by reactivating the applet.

Re: Installation and partitioning with a limited SSD

LM 19 doesn't require a swap partition.

Here's a link that describes the new features:

https://linuxloves.com/linux-mint-19-cinnamon/

I would go with the newly released 19.1 "Tessa" just came out today.

Re: Trying to install kernel - broken dependencies

LM 17.3 the kernel should be 4.4.0-140-generic

Of course if dougal is still using LM 13 Maya (from his signature line) then best of luck.

Edit: Support stopped for Maya end of April 2017.

I've been a member here quite a long time, but inactive for most of that time. I think the last time I was active I was using, or fumbling around with Mint 13. Some time ago I purchased Mint 18,2 which I am using to write this in firefox browser. Anyway, I'll be trying to get back up to at least se...

Re: Transfer from Windows 10

I bought a used pc 3 years ago. It came with Windows 10. It ran ok but I couldn't figure out how to change the startup music. It was either on or off. So I did a search and ran across Linux Mint 17. I downloaded it and installed it on another partition and it was so easy. Pretty soon I was listening...
