Re: App for phone lost at home

@ AZgl1500 The idea sounds good. I installed MacroDroid and triggered a macro playing a sound when receiving SMS. As I do not have a second phone I used websites offering free SMS but SMS never reach my phone :( I tried several websites but always have an issue and SMS is lost on his way. I have us...

Re: UPS software/ Apcupsd still maintained?

Tnx for bringing this up, I have a big desktop that runs 24/7/265
and it has a 1500 Watt supply that can keep the monitor/PC/Modems alive for 20 minutes....

I need to hook up the auto shutdown feature so the Win7 HDD don't get screwed up.

Re: App for phone lost at home

I created another macro that sends back my Geo location to anyone who sends the SMS message "whereareyou"

the macro polls the GPS receiver, and then sends the Lat/Long in a message that can be tapped with your finger and brings up Google Maps.

Re: App for phone lost at home

I have just the thing for you, I have it on my Android. This requires you borrow another cellphone and send yourself a text 'FindMe' all in lowercase. Install MacroDroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arlosoft.macrodroid&hl=en the app comes with some Examples/Templates, and one of...

Re: Hello Mint people!

Welcome to the Mint community. last night, I finally after two years got a decent amount of recognition for Linux Mint. 8) I had an old Dell laptop, => 10 years, can't remember now. I put 18.3 Cinnamon on it and mailed it off to my sister up in Utah, a small piece of land from here, like about 1700 ...

Re: Perfecting an Aptik re-creation

Just to pipe up again. After the first few times I used Timeshift, I also 'paid' for it. Given the amount of time and tears it would have caused not to have a reliable system restore application that worked as well as Timeshift, it would have been rude not to. Same goes for LM and any other softwar...

AZgl1500: So I've been told about Timeshift. What you suggest might be a good experiment, I'll probably give it a whirl after I get this backlog Everest of computer chores done. But...could "dpkg" handle something of this magnitude? What do you think? Hot Flash From The Newsroom: Aptik has "gone pi...

Re: Install linux Mint on external SSD

my laptop has two internal drive bays. the OEM is a 500gB SSD Win10 the 2nd bay was empty, I installed a 128gB SSD ( had 4 of them in a drawer for projects ) as my laptop had the OEM drive set up as RAID, linux live session was not able to see it, so it would not install linux alongside Win10. when ...

Re: Perfecting an Aptik re-creation

AZgl1500: Yes, I tried it that way, and another by selecting sections. But in neither case did it transfer the number of desktop "workspaces", root log-in, password or the "allow manual log in" feature. While these were easy enough to re-create, something was missed. Basically, for future reference...

Re: Perfecting an Aptik re-creation

I use an extUSB drive as the Target to save the Aptik files on. I do not make any changes to the defaults as TJ has it set up. I let it run, and save the files to the ext drive. then when using that to restore to a different PC, I have to install Aptik on the new PC, and then point it the directory ...

Logitech M510 works fine with the USB dongle plugged in.

same here, I have 5 of them, one dedicated for each machine.
it is a PITA to move them around, and you risk loosing that tiny dongle.

Re: Corona virus (COVID-19)

I read today, that 70% alcohol is the best ratio for breaking down the virus cells and that adding some good soap, I prefer 'Dawn' as it is a good degreaser, helps to flush that virus cell down the drain. Today, our state governor issued a "Stay at Home" order: he modified that a slight bit, and sai...

Re: POOR VISION is very greatly ignored. ACCESSIBILITY instead.

I'm going to dip in here again. My new toy is a 17" screen UH-DEF, and the standard Grub menu is so tiny, that I was having a lot of trouble reading it. Reading a thread on the same topic, I used a suggested theme that made the fonts so huge, that I was unable to see 2/3rds of the lines in Options a...

Well,
he does have a point.
most installs start in a Terminal situation with small fonts, and as he mentioned, just a difference in contrast.

but, he put it in the wrong forum category, and posted it like it is all our fault? :?

Re: what are the Most Used keys on our keyboards?

A sexy lady at one of my previous employers that very long finger nails, and I could always her the finger nail snaps when she typed. She had grooves worn in a number of her key caps. Men do not have the finger nail wear as the ladies, but a keyboard protector can still be useful. Coffee spill...

no, it was not. I wanted to see what it would do, and that is what I came up with. a bit of knowledge... sure, I could have picked out only /home and that would have worked but, I don't like the older laptop, it was NOT worth the time to go thru with the experiment. I enjoyed seeing what TJ has don...

Re: LMDE 4 “Debbie” released!

I just installed LMDE 4 as a dual boot on my system, I ran into the following issues. 1. It would not let me install on the same drive as my LM 19.3, it wanted to erase the disk and start from scratch. I ended up installing it on one of my extra disks. 2 After completing the installation I configur...
