Re: Steam doesn't boot

Steam comes bundled with a bunch of libraries in case your system doesn't have them. Unfortunately, many are quite old and cause OpenGL compatibility issues. All you have to do is delete the Steam-bundled libraries to force Steam to use your (newer) system libraries. So, go through the error message...

Re: File Systems and Partition Size Reco

I don't mess around with trying to 'fix' Windows system problems, but instead just roll my system back to a previous system image snapshot. If my OS ain't working, I re-image. I learned a long time ago to stop the insanity of trying to fix OS based problems. This makes perfect sense...for Windows. ...

Re: Problem installing mint

Did anyone actually LOOK at the inxi report above?

He's got a 1TB drive, but the only recognized partition is a tiny 3.7GB one.

Reinstall Linux, and tell it to erase and use the entire drive, not just the free space.

"Hey dad look the login screen is ready in your PC you can start using it, Windows is so slow starting up." That! was hilarious I was    So I've asked, But slow? Re: I cannot convince my family to use Linux

At one time, a few years ago, I was supporting over a dozen Windows users, most my age (late 60's at the time) or older. Mainly because they attended the church I attended. They would complain about their windows problems and ask me to come over and fix Windows because they knew I wrote software an...

Re: I cannot convince my family to use Linux

I'm a full Linux user since 2012, but I cannot convince my wife and my sons to use it. [...] I'm a bit disappointed. I've done almost everything to promote Linux and Open Source in my family. What else can I do? Full time Linux user since the day Linus posted it on Usenet (23 years? groan..). Of co...

Re: 17.3 Cinnamon - X server failed, could not reboot

You say you lost the program "Videos" and re-installed it from the Synaptic package manager? I don't see any package named "Videos". There is a "Videos" folder in your home directory, but it's not a program you can install. What exactly was the name of the package you installed? I guessing you found...

Re: Uses for old computers?

Not worth messing with old computers in my opinion, especially desktop computers. They use too much power and very underpowered. With the electricity savings I can get a low cost mini PC like the Intel NUC, Chromebox, or something similar for $100-150. They use a lot less power and are far more pow...

Re: How do I install Broadcom drivers offline with terminal?

Can you try another live distro media like ubuntu or SystemRescueCd from here http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=systemrescue The trick here is to at least have wifi working from the live media. Then you can chroot and install the drivers from the repo. But nothing can move forward witho...

No, you need to reboot without the stick, else you'll just end up in the live session again.

Mine looks exactly the same for a wired connection :? That's the "disconnected" icon. Re: How do I install Broadcom drivers offline with terminal?

Ok Jim here's what we got Ok, looks good. So now when you go back to Driver Manager and hit the OK button, it should install. Does it? If not, go to /pool/main/b/bcmwl/ on the USB and double click the .deb file to install. There should be only one. On my version it's "bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.2...

Re: How do I install Broadcom drivers offline with terminal?

Ok, we miscommunicated the meaning of persistence earlier. When I said the install is not persistent, I meant that whatever you do in the LIVE session (installing drivers, etc) does not carry over to the INSTALLED system. Making a USB stick with 'persistence' only makes changes to the LIVE session p...

Hello, I would like to allow a standard user to use software manager, so they can install from there, but NOT allow any other types of install/apt-get, add ppa's etc. Is there a group for mininstall? Thanks! You can add ppa's, modify repo sources, and uninstall anything on the system from Software ...
