Re: Roland PC-200 MKII Keyboard

Suppose I just want to play at the keyboard and have the computer generate the sound. According to you, I will require a synthesizer. Can you recommend a specific synthesizer that works on LinuxMint and what would be required to install it. Do I need anything else ? Recommending a synthesizer is a ...

Re: bash SHELL environment variable not set

Two questions:

1. How did you create the additional user accounts?

2. How are you determining that the $SHELL environment variable is not set?

Another possibility is that you have the web browser set up to re-open all tabs at startup. Just find the tab with NPR and close it.

Thanks for the explanation, LinuxJim. So, ... is CUPS the preferred thing to use, since it's primarily for OS X? Or Foomatic? All these options are a bit bewildering when I'm just looking for a printer driver... Don't worry about it - they are all built-in to the system already. I was just ...

The culture of the government or the culture of the people? Seems like there's a difference. Culture is culture. The local government is part of what defines the culture. Who gets to decide what a country's culture is? That country, of course. I think I see where you're going, though. But atrocitie...

My favorite games are C, Assembly, Python, Lisp, Awk, Pascal, and Ada.

Oh, and Emacs.

I used to play Fortran, but the fun wore off pretty quickly.

Re: Screen turns black for few seconds after installing software

1. I looked up the website of Shotwell (https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Shotwell/BuildingAndInstalling) and figured I needed to install the dependencies first. So I ran the following code in the terminal: sudo apt-get install desktop-file-utils libgconf2-dev libgee-0.8-dev libgexiv2-dev \ libglib2.0-de...

" CNN reported that Apple had been accused of “kowtowing to the Chinese government” after “pulling from its China App Store a product enabling users to circumvent firewalls and access restricted sites.” This wasn’t the first time since 2011 that Apple had removed apps that people in China used to a...

Re: Screensaver - Excessive Power issue with 17 Rosa?

Beg to differ with you on this point, which I hear a lot. I use a screensaver, GLPhotoshow, on my big screen during dinner parties. It is quite awesome, picking a random image from a library of 16,000. So, while I agree there is not a technical rationale for a screensaver, there is an aesthetic one...

Re: Running DOS program on Linux Mint?

But, I have written DOS clone operating systems in the past, and have seen the source to both dosbox and dosemu (and FreeDOS, and RxDOS, and DR-DOS, and genuine MS-DOS). Dosemu is much closer to a 'compatible' DOS platform than dosbox - but dosbox has some interesting hacks to make certain games run...

Re: San Bernadino iPhone successfully cracked

While the article claims that the cracking method only works against one specific model of the iPhone, can we expect that to actually be true? Assuming that Apple can learn the identity of the person(s) who cracked the iPhone, they stand to make a boatload of money from Apple for disclosing the met...

Re: Which version?

A lot of GUI apps these days assume you have a minimum display size of 1024x768 (right or wrong, it is what it is). Dialog boxes simply won't fit on that little netbook with a 600 pixel screen. Usabilty suffers.

If you can put up with that inconvenience, MATE or XFCE would be the best choices.

Re: Screensaver - Excessive Power issue with 17 Rosa?

This is obviously not a good thing since it's bad for the processor while using substantially more energy than not using a screensaver at all. Screensavers were designed in the days when display devices consisted of cathode-ray tubes that could suffer from phosphor 'burn-in'. For the past couple of...

Re: Firewall rules set per application?

If Windows users want to jump ship and move to Linux, that's great - more power to them. We have a thriving community to help them and educate them through the process. This is an unfortunate attitude, I think. To be blunt it's a little arrogant. Linux and its community of users are not perfect, an...

Re: Running DOS program on Linux Mint?

Open and login to (Synaptic) Package Manager, search/locate dosbox , read the description (or go to their website), will it help you acheive your goal? Dosbox is designed for running DOS games specifically. While it may work for the OP, a better, general-purpose solution for running DOS software is...

Re: No scroll arrows in Audacity

Scroll bar appearance is a function of the window manager (part of your desktop environment). Audacity doesn't draw them. You can get the arrows by switching to a desktop theme that draws scroll bars with arrows.
