Re: Cron executed, but doesn't do anything

If you're trying to run a GUI program from cron, you have to tell it what display to attach to in the crontab:

Code: Select all

export DISPLAY=:0

Re: Is there aplace that explains Metacity, Compton, Compiz,

It can be very confusing at first, but most of the things you listed are just different window managers. Some are compositing window managers. Maybe start here to get a handle on what these things do: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_manager https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compositing_window_manag...

That's what it should do. If you want the whole desktop in a window, connect with vnc instead of ssh.

I'm not sure if Cinnamon's 3D renderer will barf at that - XFCE might be a little more sane... ;)

Have you looked into GnuCash? It's said to be good, and it can import your Quicken files. Here 's a blogger who made the switch and lived to tell the tale . Gnucash is *very* good. I installed it for my wife and she had it all set up and configured to her liking within 1/2 hour. Now, if Intuit woul...

I don't see any evidence that you've tried the first suggestion in this thread:

I can't think of a decent car analogy for KDE, unless you count fictional ones.

In that case, KDE is like the Batmobile - timeless, classic look, with every conceivable gadget you can think of. :)

-Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa \n \l
+Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS \n \l

This will get 'fixed' the next time you reboot as Mint overwites a whole bunch of files on every boot with its own 'branded' copies, including /etc/issue.

Re: How do I install Broadcom drivers offline with terminal?

the drive doesnt show up when I look at Files. This sounds suspect. I don't know what Desktop Environment you're running, but most (if not all) of them in Mint should automount USB drives if you click on one in the sidebar of your file manager. Perhaps reformat and reimage the stick? If you can't s...

Re: How to increase resolution on projector (two monitors)

Then all I can suggest is to look in your laptop's manual and find out what the max resolution is for the external VGA port. It may be limited to 1024x768, so that's all you get. Shouldn't be that low if the laptop is less than 5 years old, but I've seen such limitations on older machines.

Re: How do I install Broadcom drivers offline with terminal?

Boot up your system WITHOUT the stick. Once booted, INSERT the stick, then run the Driver Manager. EDIT: (I had that backwards. Should be run Driver Manager, THEN insert stick. Sorry.) It should then offer to install the Broadcom driver from the USB stick. From that point, you can get online and upd...
