Re: Kudos to Cinnamon developers!

For those who have tried both, relate your experiences to me and why you settled on the DE you now use. I like to switch up my desktop environment fairly often. Usually it's to test some program I've written with GTK+ or Qt to see how it behaves in different environments. Other times it is just out...

Run top and look at your load average. Perhaps you have more/heavier processes running under Mint than you do in Ubuntu?

Anybody using any integrated graphics, or any single core systems? No single core, but several dual cores and several with integrated graphics. What is the make and model of the monitor/projector?

Is there a problem with running the current version on Mint v17? I am wondering why the repo appears to be lagging by quite this much ... must be for some good reason? Re: LM17.3 Cinnamon - Full System crash !!

Alright, this may seem a bit out there, but have you checked the capacitors on your board? That is a good point. Nearly all electronics (computers, routers, TVs, anything) made between ~2004 and ~2008 have a max projected lifetime of 2 years because of that darned capacitor fiasco. I had a 2006 iMa...

Re: File transfer issue

Thanks guys, I guess I need to buy better USB sticks! Lesson learned. There are a LOT of grey-market USB sticks out there coming from China whose advertised speeds and capacities are nowhere near the actual specs of the device. There was a large number of 32GB "Sandisk" sticks distributed to Wal-Ma...

Maybe you can tell us why you need to log into the desktop as root.

Re: LM17.3 Cinnamon - Full System crash !!

Is it possible a software issue to bring the computer to a state that will not respond even to REISUO? If the kernel has gone to la-la land, then REISUO (or REISUB, or any of the other SysReq keys) will not work. Be sure to wait a few seconds between each key. Going too fast will not work correctly...

Re: nm-applet permissions problem?

I switched my desktop session back to KDE (by the way, the display-manager method of switching sessions is broken - endless login loop - I had to edit my ~/.dmrc file to make it switch cleanly). Now all the errors in ~/.xsession-errors are gone. So, I don't believe it is a permissions problem - rath...

Re: nm-applet permissions problem?

Permission problems are a necessary consequence of wrong ownership (which you reported for ~/.dbus); wrong ownership is near to always the result of wrong usage of the sudo command. Open a terminal and enter (or copy it from here and paste it into the terminal by pressing ctrl-shift-V): find $HOME ...

nm-applet permissions problem?

Hi all, I recently switched a laptop over from Debian to Linux Mint 17.3 KDE Edition. After one too many glitches (for me) in the KDE environment, I decided to try Cinnamon by installing the mint-meta-cinnamon package and switching to it. A couple of problems showed up - for one, my ~/.dbus/ directo...

Re: Which Mint version is ideal for an older machine?

On a lighter note, I am quite surprised that a 32 bit machine let me run 64bit windows OS for so many years without any problems! You didn't run 64-bit Windows. You ran 32-bit Windows. The Intel Core Duo processor is not capable of running 64-bit *anything*. It was not until a year after your lapto...
