Re: Scaling Display Properly

You're a genius! Of course I have a million questions about where do you find out about all those numbers. You had me worried for a minute when you opened with the W%$%$ program stuff. I'm off that stuff and loving Linux. Anyway it's not perfect but here's what I have: xrandr --output HDMI1 --transf...

Re: Scaling Display Properly

The over scan is both vertical and horizontal. As far as the TV settings go many of them are grayed out, I'm guessing because it has HDMI input. Anyway, there is a Display Area setting that has Normal, -1 and -2 settings. I must keep it at Normal because the other two settings make matters worse. I ...

Scaling Display Properly

I am trying to use an inexpensive computer as an HTPC. Software wise everything is great except for video drivers. When I go to the display setting all I have available are 1920x1080 (16.9) and 1280 x720 (16.9). Neither setting works well. The scaling is too large for the display so I can't see the ...

I agree. I'm a Mint newbie also and this is the place where I come for advice. I'd never know the problem was solved unless I saw it here.

Re: Latest updates broke Samba

Look at the post "Lost networking to windows after Samba updates 4-18-2016" see Xenopeek's advice on rolling back. I think the date was April 24. He included a script that got me back in business. Make sure t read the next few posts don't update Samba or ldb after applying the fix.

Re: Lost networking to windows after Samba updates 4-18-2016

May the Linux Gods smile brightly on Xenopeek for his code post my machine is back to normal!

Also to thank is Vilis for the warning about the ldb update.

So I think I may have to change my name from "JayBird707" to "MrUpdateParanoid".

Re: Latest updates broke Samba

I added my network storage to fstab to work around the issue. Had to change settings in several apps. I'm just surprised that it's been a week and no resolution.

Re: Reinstall Mint Advice Needed

Rene & Austin, Thanks for all your help, advice and giving me the knowledge and confidence to go ahead with the reinstall. The manual install worked perfectly just as I thought. Recognized my LVM set up and did exactly what I expected. Rene believe it or not I just installed the printer and it's wor...

Re: Reinstall Mint Advice Needed

OK how did I end up where I am. I hate W##### OS and being forced to buy a new machine every 5+ years. I was running the V#### versions and things were getting pretty terrible along with it not having support soon. So I went over to Mint. The sdb 500G drive you see is the original 6.5 year old drive...

Reinstall Mint Advice Needed

I am 3 months into Mint and find myself on the threshold of a re install (see Double Sided Printing No Longer Works in Newbie section). When I installed Mint I had only one HD and let Mint do all the work to do a dual install with that W### operating system. Now I have two HD's with LVM set up and a...

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

Oh Rene, I suffer from 'avoidance syndrome'. You don't know how many times a reinstall of Mint has passed my mind. It wakes me up at night. But the thought of all the program reinstalls feed my avoidance psychosis. Plus that 's going to be another post when I do get to the edge of that cliff. When I...

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

Thanks for your reply Rene. Yeah, I've tried "Administration | Printers" and the Cups webserver and they didn't help. I'm another couple of hours closer to divorce court.

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

Radish, thanks for turning me on to Boomaga. It is a nice application. Unfortunately, it didn't correct the problem. I guess next stop is divorce court because for the past week every free hour has been in front of this computer trying to fix the problem and my wife is pissed.

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

I tried it no difference. This method is too clean. I need a way to get all the files out and start fresh. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded. Need to get 185 kB of arc...

Re: Double Sided Printing No Longer Works

Linux Mint 17.3 64bit with Linux 3.19.0-32-generic Brother Printer MFC-J835DW I just found that if I change the entry BRDuplex in /opt/brother/Printers/mfcj835dw/inf $ cat brmfcj835dwrc I can get the double sided to work. The only problem is that then the printer will only print double sided regardl...

Entering Terminal Text

I see many posts where terminal output is posted in a scrollable window. How do you do this? It looks like it saves a lot of space when let's say you need to post a config file or something like that.
