Re: [SOLVED]Cinnamon crashes into fallback after kernel upgrade

Looking back over these posts of mine..... I remembered a few things (and forgot a few things). Step 1 became install 17.3 cinnamon 2 and 3 did get skipped and 3 became configure, compile, install 4.5(vanilla, from kernel.org) 4 is still latest driver compiled against new kernel and everything works...

Re: Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in fallback mode

I am surprised no one suggested using tty1 for this(Ctl+Alt+F1).

Re: Not Detecting Windows 10 on Mint 17.3 Install

I currently run 2 x mint computers, and a Arch laptop. In regards to swap space, Ive heard anywhere from 1.5X RAM, to no swap at all if you dont hibernate. The general consensus over at arch is like ~2-3Gb for hibernate. Sometimes, the "missing" win10 boot entry, can be "found" by updating grub(CLI)...

Re: Mounting error -- "NTFS partition is in an unsafe state"

This is a fairly common dual-boot problem. If i remember correctly, just go into power options(in Windoze) and disable hibernation(especially for those BIOS's without the option to disable "fast boot"), and again in advanced options(me thinks). I do remember it being in 2 places, however not entirel...

PSA: Kernel 4.6 and Nvidia

Nvidia drivers are not compiling against the new 4.6 kernel.
Several patches and workarounds are posted, but my luck is none whatsoever at the moment.
Suggestions are welcomed(other than the usual downgrade, or "use a supported kernel").

If you check the other security updates for Ubi, it isn't just 3.13 that got updated.

Re: Should I upgrade the kernel??

<Rant ON> This is a touchy subject for me. I always recommend upgrading the kernel(bug fixes, security updates, etc.), however I disagree with doing it the mint way. The mint way is "blindly" updating the kernel through update manager or Synaptics. Without checking the configuration(Ive even heard p...

Re: AMD integrated graphics, and speed.

Basically I agree with coffee. However,I think you should ditch AMD all together. AMD itself admitted "We cannot compete with Intel on the high-end". And even the 6700K out-performs the 9590. (AMD's greatest downfall: trying to do the same, with half of what Intel is using*). Although Intel is more ...

Re: Hardware Advice for Next Computer

Future proof the power supply. >750 watts, modular if you dont like hiding your cables. Which of course, costs more money. EDIT: pricewatch is your friend. http://www.pricewatch.com/ Very reputable, been around for a long time. Most are reputable vendors, a few are not, just check the reviews. And t...

Re: Hardware Advice for Next Computer

To be honest, IF you decide to play a real game, the <$200 needed for an Nvidia GTX960: http://www.pricewatch.com/price/video_cards/geforce_gtx_960 would be well worth it. :) EDIT: I use the term "real game" as I was searching for a way to distinguish between Flash/HTML, and higher-end games running...

Re: 47 seconds till Desktop

Thank you for the tip WharfRat.

It is amazing the simple things you forget after being away from linux for 10+ years :P

BTW: My system adds 16Gb of swap in ~1 sec (dont worry, I'll fix that oversized swap partition on next re-install,
I dont even have Hibernate compiled into the kernel!).

I'm not going to get into the "unsupported" kernel discussion.
But thank you for confirming this as "average" for a HDD.

47 seconds till Desktop

Like the title says, 47 seconds from pressing Enter on the bootloader, till I'm looking at a Cinammon desktop. As always -inxi -Fxz: inxi -Fxz System: Host: System-Product-Name Kernel: 4.5.2 x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.3.0) Desktop: Cinnamon 2.8.8 (Gtk 3.10.8~8+qiana) Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa Machine:...

Re: Installing windows 7 alongside linux mint 17.3 with a preexisting windows 8.1

formatting the win8 partition can be done with the win7 install DVD.
After installation of win7, boot the live mint media.

Re: Installing windows 7 alongside linux mint 17.3 with a preexisting windows 8.1

Install windows 7 to the Win8 partition. You probably will have to format the partition first(been awhile since i did a W7 downgrade).
You will have to re-install your boot loader, from the mint Live media.

Re: Hardware Advice for Next Computer

I have to wade in on this :P
As a devout Nvidia fanboy, lets look at AMD/ATI.
A CPU manufacturer, who admitted they couldn't keep up with high-end Intel, is now making video cards.
Enough said

Re: Update Manager list of updates

yes, if using 64bit, update google-chrome.list as suggested.
However, sometimes it creeps back, just make google-chrome.list read-only.

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 0444 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list

Re: "Could not refresh the list of updates"

@Jeff
Google Chrome has dropped 32 bit support for linux.
Either upgrade to 64-bit or remove the repo.
