Re: 47 seconds till Desktop

Thank you for the tip WharfRat.

It is amazing the simple things you forget after being away from linux for 10+ years :P

BTW: My system adds 16Gb of swap in ~1 sec (dont worry, I'll fix that oversized swap partition on next re-install,
I dont even have Hibernate compiled into the kernel!).

Re: 47 seconds till Desktop

I'm not going to get into the "unsupported" kernel discussion.
But thank you for confirming this as "average" for a HDD.

47 seconds till Desktop

Like the title says, 47 seconds from pressing Enter on the bootloader, till I'm looking at a Cinammon desktop. As always -inxi -Fxz: inxi -Fxz System: Host: System-Product-Name Kernel: 4.5.2 x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.3.0) Desktop: Cinnamon 2.8.8 (Gtk 3.10.8~8+qiana) Distro: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa Machine:...

Re: Installing windows 7 alongside linux mint 17.3 with a preexisting windows 8.1

formatting the win8 partition can be done with the win7 install DVD.
After installation of win7, boot the live mint media.

Re: Installing windows 7 alongside linux mint 17.3 with a preexisting windows 8.1

Install windows 7 to the Win8 partition. You probably will have to format the partition first(been awhile since i did a W7 downgrade).
You will have to re-install your boot loader, from the mint Live media.

Re: Hardware Advice for Next Computer

I have to wade in on this :P
As a devout Nvidia fanboy, lets look at AMD/ATI.
A CPU manufacturer, who admitted they couldn't keep up with high-end Intel, is now making video cards.
Enough said

Re: Update Manager list of updates

yes, if using 64bit, update google-chrome.list as suggested.
However, sometimes it creeps back, just make google-chrome.list read-only.

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 0444 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list

Re: "Could not refresh the list of updates"

@Jeff
Google Chrome has dropped 32 bit support for linux.
Either upgrade to 64-bit or remove the repo.

Re: Are the repositories working?

Adding to the confusion, ping by itself will keep pinging the address until you Ctl+C. You can add the -c switch followed by a space and a number(the number of times to ping). ping -c 3 www.google.com PING www.google.com (216.58.194.100) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from dfw06s48-in-f4.1e100.net (...

Re: Kernel Upgrade failed

Original post suggests what you have already said. Kernel 4.4 is installed(kinda), but update-initramfs
removed the entries for 4.4 .
Go ahead and uninstall in update manager, possibly change your mirrors, and try again :D
Or even with a different image.

Re: Kernel Upgrade failed

Which way did you try to upgrade?
Update manager seemingly works better, than synaptic or software manager.
Then there is the old-fashioned way, download source from kernel.org and configure, compile, and install it yourself.

Re: Flash player doesn't seem to work

Another thing, flash is stuck at 11.2 for linux(no longer getting updates), although there are security updates. A possible workaround is to install chrome, and use the pepperflash-plugin in firefox. However, in my installation, I wind up using chrome for flash videos and games, as the video is "stu...

Re: Hyperthreading?

I was disappointed in my Cpus Overclocking performance. I went straight for 5GHz and crashed it several times. Went back to a what I call a super stable 4.8. Prime95, Rhythmbox, forums running at same time. Took a tiny bit more voltage for stable LM vs win10 But as is well :) EDIT: an an additional ...

Re: Hyperthreading?

In the BIOS it shows 4841 MHz. In windoze(ugh) CPU-Z shows 4841.
cpuinfo and lscpu in LM shows ~4700, like its not counting the 103 BCLOCK.
Just an idle curiosity, at over 4 GHz i dont think 100MHz matters too much :D

Re: UN SOLVED --Software Update applet shows red "X"

Usually a reboot changes that line in google-chrome.list back to default.
Make the google-chrome.list file read only after editing with [arch=amd64].

Re: Hyperthreading?

Ahh,,, i got it 1 thread per core here. Here is another oddity, BIOS says 47 * 103 BCLOCK = 4.8Ghz cpuinfo again, running prime95 cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 42 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz stepping : 7 microcode : 0x28 cpu...
