Re: A brand new laptop for free!

Compared to most versions of Windows, Linux's footprint is pretty small even though it includes most, if not all, of the same features. On my desktop, when clean installing the OSes to their respective partitions, Windows 10 Pro x64 took up around 22GB and Mint 18 KDE x64 only took up around 13-14GB...

Re: Kernel 4.6

Also, I've read there's an issue with the Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers not working on the 4.6+ kernels requiring a patch.

Re: What is old oldest computer you saved with Linux?

I'm running Mint 18 XFCE on a Dell XPS M140 laptop that my parents gave me for my 18th birthday in April 2006. It originally came with an Intel ProSet Wireless 2200B/G wifi card, 512MB RAM, a 1.73GHz Pentium M with an i915GM chipset, and Windows XP Media Center Edition on a 5400RPM 60GB PATA HDD. I ...

Re: A brand new laptop for free!

From my experience, plenty of corporations run XP still; some disconnected from the network and some (yikes!) still hooked up. There's still lots of incentive for XP to be targeted. The company I worked for last year still used WinXP on one of the PC's that was hooked up to the network, and that PC...

Re: A brand new laptop for free!

That's a great story Moem! I also recently recycled a 10-year-old laptop that originally came with XP. I started with Puppy Linux, switched to Lubuntu, but ultimately decided to go with Mint 18 XFCE. I'm now using it for schoolwork since I've gone back to college. It really is amazing how well older...

Re: All Desktop Screenshots - Last Half of 2016

I decided to switch my recently overhauled 10-year-old Dell XPS M140 laptop from Lubuntu 16.04.1 to Mint 18 XFCE this weekend.

Re: Linux Mint Logo Reimagined

That's a great logo killer-j! I set it as my menu icon on KDE and it matches my colorful desktop and the flat icon set I'm using really well. Thanks for posting it. And sonopro, your logos look great too. They look very polished and they look like they would be perfect on the system info center in t...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE released!

There have recently been a few negative comments about LM18 KDE on here. So what are the compelling reasons that I should give it a try? Compelling reasons for LM18 KDE? Well, I would consider Dolphin a compelling reason, if it's root capabilities were not missing in Mint. KDE Connect is als...

Re: Can't adjust Plasma panels nor move desktop widgets

First, right-click and select "Desktop Settings." Go down to "Tweaks" and make sure the option "Press and hold widgets to move them and reveal their handles" is checked, then click "OK". Make sure the widgets are unlocked, by right-clicking on the desktop. If the menu contains the option "Lock Widge...

I think can help you out with a couple of those: -For the login clock, I wanted the same thing on mine. I was able to find this how-to from Kubuntu via Google here . I know this works for the lock screen login, however I'm not sure if this affects SDDM also... -To get the preview thumbnails in Dolph...

Re: What's your favorite native Linux game?

I'm really into re-living my childhood with emulators. I use Kega Fusion, SNES9X, ePSXe, and PCSX2. I find myself playing ePSXe and PCSX2 the most since I still have stacks of old PS and PS2 disks laying around. A lot of great games in those eras...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE released!

For me, it helped to turn off the Kwin script to enforce window decorations for GTK apps (Settings>Window Management>KWin Scripts: Uncheck "Enforces Window Decorations on GTK+ window") and also in the compositor settings (Settings>Display and Monitor>Compositor), a tooltip showed up saying that usin...

Unreadable tooltips on desktop

I am using the "Diamond" desktop theme on the new Mint 18 KDE release and whenever I hover over any of my plasmoid widgets, the tooltip that pops up is unreadable. It is a light gray font on a transparent background. Here's part of a screenshot showing what I mean: http://i1076.removed/albums/w450/M...

Re: No System Sounds

Wow, great find. I can't go back and test this as I've moved from 17.3 Cinnamon back when I first posted this, to 18 KDE now... Hopefully if some of the others who posted about this issue still have their respective installs intact this may help them fix their issues.

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE – BETA Release

I ran into a couple more issues: 1.Ark won’t open .zip files for me. I click on them and Ark opens, but nothing is listed there and the extract button is grayed out. I ended up having to use the terminal to unzip the folder. 2. KWin segfaults randomly sometimes when I open Google Chrome or Spotify. ...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE – BETA Release

How are you opening Dolphin as root? I do it with right-click on a directory and selecting actions > open as root. I have no issues with that. That's how I usually do it too. Sometimes it works fine, other times it gives me the error message. I also tried kdesudo dolphin in Konsole but that doesn't...

Re: Puppy Linux

I wasn't a big fan of JWM either. Going from WinXP to Puppy/JWM felt like a downgrade because JWM looks more like Win9x. I tried IceWM for awhile and liked it, but ultimately went with Openbox/LXpanel for the rest of the time that I used Puppy.
