Re: Seeking GUI File Manager that doesn't hide .desktop file extension
Thanks for the good suggestions. I gave XFE a spin around the block, and immediately encountered some UI issues. I'm currently chewing on the GTK2 version of SpaceFM. There's some real depth to the configuration options there which will keep me busy for a while. And of course, the thing that appears...

Seeking GUI File Manager that doesn't hide .desktop file extension
I would very much like to find a GUI file manager that displays files as they actually exist, with none of the annoying nonsense with *.desktop, theme (index.theme), and perhaps other types of files that most file managers habitually misrepresent. "PAR" is not a command, it's an environment variable. It's defined by the line that starts "PAR='winepath . . . "JanErik wrote:So I wonder if anybody will ever let me know what "PAR" is, what it does and how it should be used............

Re: HP Deskjet F4210 "All-In-One"
I'd recommend the packages "hplip" and "hplip-gui". This is the software HP provides for its printers on Linux. I have a Deskjet F4180 on Linux Mint 17.3 Mate, and it all works well except for the notification area icon. Instead of that, I put a permanent launcher icon on my task...

Re: Linux Mint 18, Synaptic "Mark for upgrade" menu item gone
Here's a website with info on how to fix LM's broken version of Synaptic, which I used quite successfully on my LM 17.3:

Of course you'll have to adapt the details to suit the LM 18 environment . . .

Re: folder doubled when copied to storage drive
The NTFS file system used in Windows supports "compressed" files and folders. So, if files like that were read and transferred to an
uncompressed format on a Linux filesystem, then they would certainly "expand" in disk usage.

No, the site is not showing the page linked to above in anyone's browser. It's showing a login page instead. Wget will not be able to access the link in

According to the specs I saw on a Brother site, the scanner only has WIA (Windows) and Twain (Windows and Mac OS) support. No mention
of Linux at all.

Right-click the Main Menu (Mint Menu) button. Choose Preferences. Most of the tabs on the resulting dialog have a box to choose icon size. The default is 24.
