Couldn't we simply use a wet towel or a sponge on a stick like the Romans used to use?
Years ago my dermatologist told me that the best thing to use on your dirty behind was a wet washcloth, but most people wouldn't do that because they wouldn't want to clean them (the washcloths) afterwards. :)

If that doesn’t work then I will hold my nose and install Win 10 unless someone knows of another flavour of Linux that reliably recognizes USB peripherals. I have a...

Been with it since it was called Navigator, and even then, it was 'better' than the other crowd.
Firefox peaked at version 3.6. After that it started going downhill.

That's it. imgur's tracking is being blocked. All good--as long as I know why.
Can you explain that please? (The tracking part.)

What desktop are you using, Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce? Does right clicking them give you the option to remove from panel?

I don't know if this is part of the problem, or if it would even help, but do you have hplip (HP Linux Printing and Imaging System) installed?

Except for browsers, don't expect the repos to have the newest versions of apps. That's not the way Linux works.
