Re: Scanning

I have Mint 17.3, and couldn't be happier with it, except for one thing. I have a Brother DCP-J525W printer/scanner: the connection from the computer is wi-fi. This works fine, with all types of printing and colours, but it won't work as a scanner. I have reset the printer and re-installed it sever...

Re: I'm not so sure about Mint lately.... :(

I run an Asus gaming laptop and 17.3 KDE is great. Only problem I have about LINUX is the battery life and that's it  -A good low-power system would be XFCE without COMPIZ (desktop effects). So go with Linux Mint XFCE. -The more recent the kernel, the better the power management, in general, ...

Re: Epson All-in-one printer/scanners

You have two main options: go to the manufacturer web site and check for proprietary, downloadable linux drivers, as I did with my Brother HL-L2380DW, or try it out of the box with the default drivers. Otherwise, Linux may not support that option. I threw an old scanner in the garbage can last year,...

Re: Do I need crapcleaner

One of the more useful utilities in my windows days was a program called Crapcleaner. It speeded windows up by getting rid of a lot of useless junk. Is there a mint equivalent of Crapcleaner, or can Crapcleaner be downloaded directly onto mint 17.3 ? Do I even need it ? Are there any other housekee...

Re: email from cron job failing

I have a very simple script that moves files from one location to another once a week. I'd like to send myself an email letting me know it completed successfully. Here's what I have: 0 1 * * Mon ~/TB/scripts/movefiles mail -s "CronJob is run successfully" me@mine.com Without the mail command, the s...

Re: Restarting gets stuck on black screen

I'm guessing this is some crazy unfixable kernel thing right?? Difficult to say without more information. The messages suggest something to do with RAID or the kernel. I'd try reverting any change made recently to the operating system, particularly to configuration files. Secondly, consider changin...

Re: Bleachbit

I found what I expected to find: the naysayers have no GUI alternative to Bleachbit. If you don't need a program, it's certainly easy to find fault with it. No need to learn its ways, figure out how to use it, or any of that. But when you service a large number of hard drives... Bleachbit comes in h...

Re: Bleachbit

Are we going to have again the same discussion that we had already fifteen times? Obviously, but not surprisingly. With a new appearance: Instead of arguments self-declared "wisely" re-writes of advices, which exist already 1001 times. So at the end indeed nothing than repetitions. That's...

Re: Bleachbit

Bleachbit is still actively developed. I recommend getting the latest version from the author, because Linux Mint's, I believe, is outdated. Older versions seemed to have some problems and that may explain in part Cosmo's dislike of the program. I consider Bleachbit a useful program. It is useful fo...

I've not noticed any problem with the voting before, so perhaps it is just a fluke. Thanks Xenopeek for your efforts.

Re: PSA: Google Chrome drops support for 32 bit and Mint 13

Like i said this seems like a really mean spirited move ??? Google WAS paying for the development of a piece of 32-bit software. The powers-that-be at Google have decided to stop spending that money. And they (Google) are making a HUGE amount of money from us: http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/16/techno...

Re: Windows 10 & Linux Mint--- delete recovery partition?

partitions.pdf This is my current partition set up. I want to install Mint in the 58 Gig. section but get a message that I have too many primary partitions after I start to make the Linux ones during Mint set-up. I am limited to four primary partitions apparently. Windows is inaccurate. It says you...

Voting in the Community

I received a note from lib2know suggesting that Community tutorial voting may have a problem. "Hi :) I just voted for your tutorial: How to Change Font Color on the Linux Mint Xfce Desktop Before I voted it had 13 votes and score 12. By _promoting_ it a vote got lost! So votes are 12 instead of 14 ....

Re: PSA: Google Chrome drops support for 32 bit and Mint 13

I just delete Internet Explorer and Chrome whenever I see it on an old machine. Using older versions of browsers is just asking for trouble. Firefox is the only way forward.

Re: PSA: Google Chrome drops support for 32 bit and Mint 13

1. Chrome dropped support for Windows XP already - old news 2. Firefox works great on Windows XP and on all versions of Linux. So, why use Chrome at all? 3. Chromium exists as another alternative to Chrome, and it is in the default Software Manager. What Chrome does or doesn't do never interested me...

Re: Monthly News - February 2016

From my end user perspective, the security threat I evaluate as highest has nothing to do with the Linux Mint web site or the recent hack, because you guys were on top of that and publicly disclosed the relevant details, which is A+ practice, highly professional. My worry is same as before the hack,...

After 20 attempts, finally registered on forum!

 Well, take it as a tribute to how much I like Linux Mint that I hung in there and kept a-trying. You see, first, I tried my old username/pwd from the old forum, because there was nothing that said we couldn't use our old usernames. Instead of telling me my username was invalid, the forum sof...
