Re: Newbie on Linux Mint 17x how to network

How to share out directories (folders) between two linux machines. ... How is that? That is good. I'm making a link to that message and storing it in a text file, but you might want to put that in a tutorial in the Community. It was a long time before I learned how important the hosts file is. This...

Re: Mint fora issue: "Secure Connection Failed"

I've merged your topic here amethyst_igor, as this is about the same issue. To the best of our collective understanding here, this is caused by a change in Firefox 46 and will hopefully be fixed in Firefox 47. Users on other forums have reported the same issue with Firefox 46. It's definitely a Fir...

Re: No audio after installing Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa on my new pc

Hi, Immediately after installing Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa on my brand new pc, I have realised that there was no audio output. After some search on Google, I have tried to update ALSA mixer and Pulseaudio without any positive outcome. Windows 7 audio output on another SSD works perfectly of course! I wa...

Potential SSL issue?

For due diligence, I'm posting information about a recurring long-term problem I have posting messages to this forum. Today, using my Firefox browser, I logged in fresh by clicking log out, then entered my username and password and logged in. I replied to a message in the forum, then encountered thi...

Re: Linux Mint. I want to like it, I really do... (general impressions)

Yep. Like I said the issues aren't all Linux's fault. That said I believe the default driver is open source, and while it can be forgiven for not having the performance of AMD's proprietary drivers, not having easy to access settings is just frustrating. Also weirdly the default driver renders Cinn...

Re: Acer Aspire ES1-521-650T

Everyone in my family loves laptops and tablets and I'm the desktop guy. Already have 6 desktops networked throughout the house. No particular reason other than I have them and I can and I was board one day. I prefer desktops, because I love a big keyboard, big mouse, big monitor, big speakers, et ...

Re: Acer Aspire ES1-521-650T

After seeing this I cleaned the dust off an Acer Aspire 5630 BL50 that I have with vista on it and installed LM 17.1 cinnamon. Install went trouble free found all drivers no problem and runs great. I hate laptops but someone around here will adopt this one. Acer + Linux Mint 17.1 = Success. If what...

Re: Linux Mint Index

First, thank you for your reply. I will definitely consider everything you wrote. As far as 90's design, I think some of that is the case. When dealing with several hundred links into LM's Main and Segfault Blogs, it is hard to come up with something that looks cool while also being useful. I'm cer...

Re: Linux Mint Index

There's a website up now with some cross-references (an index) to LM blog posts and so forth. I hope it will be useful to the LM community. I am hoping to expand it to include a full A-Z index. This is not part of an official LM website. I hope to give back by making information on various aspects ...

Re: Linux Mint. I want to like it, I really do... (general impressions)

That said, some people have gotten their AMD to work okay. I guess that's me - except I didn't have to do anything to my AMD rig to work OK. Just installed LM and it worked out of the box. RAID was a bit tricky but that hardly had anything to with having an AMD CPU. Same deal here. I've had no prob...

Re: Bored with Mint

Hee hee...amusing responses! All in all I was quite happy with Arch...until that last update that broke the system. And, I know about the Mint philosophy...based on Debian, massaged by Ubuntu and stabilized by the Mint team. A fairly winning combination. When I mention I'm on Linux, people usually ...

Re: Linux Mint. I want to like it, I really do... (general impressions)

I chose Linux Mint for a media center PC that I built. The computer isn't super powerful... Socket FM1 motherboard with an AMD a3400 APU and 2 GB of RAM. It was built on a $50 budget, and its purpose is to watch YouTube, play videos, and run a few Old Skool console emulators. (Sega Genesis, N64, Pl...

Re: How I Lost Three Operating Systems in One Night

Gparted does not give a lot of information. It assumes you know what you are doing. ...and therein lies the rub! I think anyone who tinkers with computers doing "digital surgery" on them has shot themselves in the foot at least once. My first foot wound happened 25 years ago when I was using DOS (M...

Re: How I Lost Three Operating Systems in One Night

I've been using systemback on linux. Not sure how good it will be if I need a complete reinstall - but it gives the option of system restore points, or iso creation for a live dvd or sblive for usb stick. This can be used for booting into a live installation of your system from dvd or usb, which is...

Re: How I Lost Three Operating Systems in One Night

"Measure twice and cut once" also goes for formatting hard disks... I've had to fall back to an older backup once and it's a bummer. Did you try using TestDisk at all? That may have been able to recover deleted partitions or at least recover files from it. I've tried the Linux recover utilities in ...

How I Lost Three Operating Systems in One Night

So, I bought a 480GB solid state drive as an upgrade for a WIndows 10 computer that had a 120 GB SSD. Clonezilla worked swimmingly to clone Windows 10 onto the new, bigger SSD. I think of Clonezilla as one of the top "absolutely essential" Linux distributions, whether one is using Windows or Linux, ...
