Re: Catalyst / fglrx going the way of the Dodo Bird

Frankly, I wouldn't cry a single tear if someone leaked all the super sekrit squirrel bits from printers, graphics cards & chip sets, network cards, sound cards, or pretty much anything else, so that the libre community could write their own drivers and basically tell the hardware makers to go scre...

Re: I speed up mint

The link to the page you found is from one of our members here, Pjotr give him thanks next time you see him here on the forum. He puts a lot work into it. Cool, I have used that page often and find it to be well-written and right. It is an excellent reference. Tweaking probably isn't absolutely nec...

Re: Catalyst / fglrx going the way of the Dodo Bird

Ah, the love/hate war rages on. *roasts some marshmallows* Seriously though, isn't it at some point incumbent upon the user to do some research before buying? I mean, would you decide to buy property in bumf**k pick-a-state without being sure, for example, that there was broadband Internet? Cell se...

Re: Dedoimedo's Dis of Xenial Xeru

Still and all, I find dedo amusing at times, to the point and informative. One doesn't haven't to agree with everything one reads. And, it's quite logical for dedo to dislike 17.3 Rosa, and like 17.3 Xfce. Different desktop. I can't tell. He doesn't say which desktop he used when he tried Rosa for ...

Re: Catalyst / fglrx going the way of the Dodo Bird

I got an old intel sitting in the closet collecting dust which I can still use when it comes down the pipeline, so I still got a backup if needed but I'll just keep mint 17 on it until I get a new one. Edit: I noticed you tried and it didn't work, so I just downloaded ubuntu 16 lts which uses the n...

Re: One month with Linux Mint Cinnamon

One thing, since you have "photog" in your username, check out image editor Krita in Software Sources. It's the best I've found in Linux, and beats a lot of Windows programs, too.

Re: Can't post a message on the forum

Clear the cache and try again, if it persists, then maybe send to admin@linuxmint.com ? Seems to be ok now. I'm assuming it was a cache problem. Kind of weirded me out, because I wondered if I had been banned for some as yet unknown misdemeanor or just on general principles. I couldn't even get a p...

Re: Dedoimedo's Dis of Xenial Xeru

It is not necessary to read it's articles. They often changing their mind to 180 degree in few weeks. Today something is very bad, later it became very good. Author is the same. Dedo can be the harshest Linux distro critic I've seen, but I think his passion is borne of love for Linux. When he likes...

Dedoimedo's Dis of Xenial Xerus

Looks like Xenial Xeru gets no love from Dedoimedo . This is relevant to LM'ers, because the next LM will be based on Xeru. Personally, I'm probably going to stick with 17.3 for a while. The thing is, I have to add PPA's anyway to get the latest versions of stuff, even on one of my Xubuntu 16.04 rig...

Re: Pretty Boot loader?

You can embellish your Grub bootloader menu by giving it a holiday picture as background: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/beautifygrub That's an easy, failsafe tweak which can't damage Grub at all. Which is an important advantage for such an important piece of your system. +1 to ...

Re: Is there an approximate date when Mint 18 will be released?

Just wondering since it's not being mentioned in the blog. If it was a rattlesnake, you'd be dead. Linux Mint 18 is estimated to be released around May/June 2016 Today is Friday, so WHEN IT'S READY. Right-o. You can have your cake Cheap, Quick, or Good, but no two at the same time. Which do you pre...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

No, 0.8.6 is not the version of Smplayer I use. I use version 16.4.0. I do not use mplayer 1.1. It is old, and you should delete it. I instead have configured Smplayer to use mpv git-3353923 (C) 2000-2016 mpv/MPlayer/mplayer2 projects, built on Sun Mar 20 13:52:21 UTC 2016. Review again my blog pos...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

Well, yeah, what I said earlier about installing VDPAU. It's weird, I know, but vaapi seems to play ball with vdpau, even though vdpau is technically NVIDIA. I don't really understand it and am not sure I want to, but the bottom line is, I can select vaapi in SMPlayer and it seems to work fine. So ...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

That works OK on my Celeron for some video files, but not all. The poor little Smelleron just doesn't have the horsepower. There are three optimal flavors: xv, Intel Sprite, and Intel Textured, with the latter ones looking better and requiring more cpu. The reason textured causes stuttering is beca...
