Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

RE: vaapi I havent managed to get SMPlayer to run with VAAPI, but I am not sure it will help. I ran MPV on the command line as follows, it was still stuttering... mpv --hwdec=vaapi Detected file format: QuickTime / MOV (libavformat) Clip info: major_brand: mp42 minor_version: 512 compatible_brands:...

Re: your TOP games

I play Minecraft on Linux, too, because I have only 4 GB of RAM and Windows system takes at least 40%-50% of it initially, so I can't play modded Minecraft without latency and freezes. But it does need a dedicated graphics card and my computer is "all-in-one". I don't have a dedicated graphics card....

Re: Linux Mint For Big Screen

Most folks operate their computers from a desk. I operate mine from a recliner viewing a 40" monitor/TV (1 meter). I found it difficult if not impossible to do that using most Linux operating systems. I tried Mate and XFC but I had only minimal success in enlarging the fonts and panel. Then I tried...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

Dang. I forgot the most important thing. If you're running 17.1 or 17.2 with an intel Ironlake gpu, update to 17.3 and make sure you also update the kernel/xorg stack etc stuff. The web point series update doesn't do this automatically. Mine worked fine in 17 but 17.1 and .2 didn't. There was a reg...

LOL @ The Register. I read that every day. It is kind of a guilty pleasure. I do learn about new things, but mainly it's just blurbs with a little bit of info. Fast food.

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

I have a laptop running 17.3 Xfce with the same Ironlake series graphics, but that isn't what I'm typing this on so I'll see what I can find from my bookmarks. The tear free option is for newer INtel gpus and won't work on anything pre Skylake (I think). Turning off as much compositing as possible ...

Re: One more reason to avoid Windows 10

Sounds weird, I know, but I'll guess MS will tune the compression store depending on the amount of available RAM. The hard drive is the #1 or #2 bottleneck on many systems, depending on the amount of network bandwidth, another bottleneck that competes for #1. Putting things in RAM, lightly compress...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

I'm running LM 17.3 Cinnamon on a DELL with Intel graphics. Normal usage, moving windows around etc, is tear-free and seems smooth. But, video playback (mp4 video) stutters and seems to stall every second or so, appears regular. In Video app and also VLC. Very obvious when lots is changing on scree...

Re: One more reason to avoid Windows 10

I've been browsing the Superuser today and found this problem . In short, Microsoft plans to update Win10 with a "compression store", which "compresses unused pages" in RAM instead of writing them to hard drive. They assert that it will allow to maintain more programs in RAM at a time. In practice,...

Re: Site that fingerprints users, how do they do it?

I see what you mean. But even when I was using a vanilla chrome installation and a different IP I still got busted by this Mod in a particular sub-forum. (can post in any of the other parts of the forums, but not that one. 6 years go, he told me "you're f&cking russian psy-ops spy, and he'll ban me...

Re: Dual Boot Full HDD Encryption Methods

Hi All, I am looking to setup a Mint/Kali dual boot installation in the most secure way possible. I know that using LUKS encryption essentially encrypts the whole HDD and does not allow you to re-size partitions or create free space to install any other operating systems afterwards (Kali). Is there...

Xscreensaver and the Night Life

The author of xscreensaver recently requested it be removed from Debian , which is not going to happen, but in one of his flames he dropped a link for the nightclub he owns, so I surfed on over and read the blog for his nightclub, which seems like the kind of place I'd definitely go to. Anyone in Sa...

Re: How do I run Dreamweaver CC or CS6 on Linux

No thanks, I don't like watching videos. Have you tried the workaround listed on the WineHQ page for the CS6 version ? I don't like videos either. Seems everytime I Google something these days, a video pops up. There are some really good answers at the top of this thread. 1. Use Windows in a virtua...

Re: how do I increase Zalman CPU fan speed?

I have a Zalman CNPS9900MAX CPU fan/heatsink. It seems to be spinning awfully slow and when I boot, I even get a "low CPU fan warning" forcing me to enter the BIOS and then exit. It first happened when I upgraded to Windows 10. I fixed it by downloading the "AI Suite" from ASUS for my motherboard (...

Re: Crowdfunding Porting Programs to Linux

I love linux to the point that I don't have any Windoze partitions anymore, but why should the devs of ACDSee particularly care about linux? It's less than 2% of the market. It's not the business model or whatever that's the problem. It's the mongrel nature of Linux distros. Technically, linux is a...
