Re: How to Load Applet on Linux 19.1

Just tried this. 1. Install "git" sudo apt install git (this is why it likely didn't work for you, if you tried their instructions previously) 2. From terminal: cd ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets 3. From terminal: sudo git clone https://github.com/imDeprecated/cryptocoin-applet.git cryptocoin@guanta...

Re: Linux-Windows Samba Share Problem [SOLVED]

atrandum, Glad it worked out for you! For me unfortunately, I have to stick with the WinSCP program, as although "force user = my name" does make it visible on the Windows laptop, I cannot change the domain, (can't switch out of my work domain), therefore can't log in. But it works, and I'm glad you...

Re: Linux-Windows Samba Share Problem

I can try and offer you a work around if you like. To get from Windows-to-Linux: The only MicroSoft I interact with at home is a work laptop, which is fairly locked-down by the business unit. I recently tried the free WinSCP program, (https://winscp.net/eng/download.php) and so far has been working ...

Re: Simple-Scan

Just out of curiosity, try this once. I had an installation (albeit Mint 18) that, for some reason, had something that I never figured out that was timing each time I opened simple-scan. If you open simple-scan, (start a timer when you open it) click on the icon at the top left, and go to preference...

Re: Simple-Scan

It should launch without any sudo invocation. Run ls -la /usr/bin/simple-scan in terminal, and post back the line it returns. Do you have a short-cut made already? Typically, on your desktop, you can right-click your mouse, choose Create a new launcher here , give it a name, and put simple-scan in t...

Re: fan is always running...

moemata, You say the fan does not run full speed all the time, but is running continuously; I'm guessing its not too annoying at the lower speed levels? According to the ASUS website, the Z505ZA has heat pipe cooling under the hand rest area--I would presume this feature is utilizing the fan you hea...

Re: fan is always running...

Did you have a look in BIOS, to see if there were any adjustable settings for Fan Hardware?

Re: fan is always running...

moemata, To add to Mute Ant's comments, also, open a terminal session, and enter top . Look at the top of the list, and check the % CPU column, to see if something is hammering one of your CPU cores continuously. Typically, after a fresh start the top, active processes should only be around 2~6%. If...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 and Stellarium and GLSL1.30

slimbrick87, Just tried this--started stellarium from terminal on Mint 18, and on 18.3 (got to get 19 up and running on my experimental system this week). On 18, the read out in terminal text was just fine as I expected, given the system hardware. On the old Optiplex with 18.3, I got the similar err...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 and Stellarium and GLSL1.30

Can you copy/paste the output ofinxi -Fxzfrom a terminal window, in code brackets? ( the </> button above your text entry box when responding.) We will need to see what your current graphics environment looks like.

Re: Linux Mint Very Slow

bassman59, If you really like Mint/Cinnamon, you could try adding more RAM. Pretty reasonable for that computer. I have the "almost" exact model, with 3 GB of 800mhz RAM--it is my experimenting computer, and currently it also has Fedora 28 on it, which when comparing Fedora's performance to Mint 18....

Re: Access one computer from another in home network

Jerry, I agree with rene—sftp is the way to go. I too fiddled around with getting consistent connections between all my systems, and eventually tried nfs, but never got it to work right. (Could never get smb to work consistently for me either for some reason—operator error? ) I eventually disc...

Re: My system is slowed

grivusag, Your previous posts attachments show the CPU cores are governing back when not heavily tasked (which should be the correct behavior depending upon your governing configuration), and that the temperatures were reasonable (in your inxi output). Logs show repetitive overtemp warnings on all c...

Re: cant identify device

Do you have an Alexa in the house? My wife got one of those things a year ago and put it where she spends the most of her time, and a very similar device has been showing up ever since.

Re: How to use Simple Scan with Canon PIXMA MG3620?

Hi Sue, If your printer is a newer model, you could try the newer driver version. (I "think" it adds to your CUPS program--don't believe its something you'd have to run insmod for) Just keep in mind, if not installing a file from a regular source (Software Center, Synaptic Package Manager), that you...

Re: How to use Simple Scan with Canon PIXMA MG3620?

Hi SueS, The webpage for CUPS has you log in for security, since it's using a browser page, and because if you go to the right page, you can get in to, and edit *.conf files for CUPS. If CUPS had the capability, it seems it would have eventually showed. Using your web-link reference, there is a *.de...

Re: How to use Simple Scan with Canon PIXMA MG3620?

Hi SueS, I have an HPJ6480, and a Canon Pixma MP620. Try this. When you open SImple Scan, click on the small icon in the very left corner of the top bar, and from the drop down, select Preferences. When that box pops up, wait a while, and see if "Scan Source" box eventually populates. I don't know w...

Re: Location of Timeshift snapshot backup files?

In Thunar, click on File System (I believe that's how it calls it). It should be listed in the left sidebar. That should show you the entire file structure of your OS. In that display of folders, you will find a home folder. Doubleclick on it-- it will then show a folder for every user on the system...

Re: Location of Timeshift snapshot backup files?

know222, I think others could respond in with their chosen favorite backup programs--sort of boils down to preference/ease-of-use for the end-user. I like Aptik - I use it to back up my /home to a dedicated partition on a separate hard drive. I like TimeShift for system data backup. I back it up to ...
