Re: Alot miscellaneous questions

1. Not much to do about file length limits. See the Limits section... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems#Limits 2. Partition RAM ??? LOL :) About all you can do for speed is limit services started on boot that you don't need. (Startup Applications) Although having too little RAM...

Re: This Driver is activated but not currently in use.

Just my personal opinion , but I have always had much better performance with Nvidia using the drivers downloaded directly from the Nvidia web site. Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us download the driver and follow the directions here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php...

Re: Existing Operating System Not Detected

You do not really need anything besides a /(root) partition and a Swap partition.

Wish I could be more help but I have Zero experience with Mac.
Hopefully someone with Mac experience will offer some help.

Re: Existing Operating System Not Detected

Just do it manually and when the partitioner comes up right click on the partition you created then "Edit Partition" and choose "Use as Ext4" and mount as / You will need at least 10+ GB of space on the partition for Mint. ( I always make it 20+ GB ) Also you will need to create a small partition fo...

Re: Join the Folding@Home cause. Join Team Linux Mint!(7614

The "Help Conquer Cancer" project may or may not have work right now but there are plenty of other worthy projects to participate in. The "Clean Energy Project" is probably not a good one to start out with unless you have a pretty high end system and fast internet. The upload files for CEP2 can be r...

Re: viewing other HD from Lisa

Linux will let you view and access files on the Windows drive/partition.
But, Windows won't show the Linux drive/partition.
Linux is smart , Windows is not so much....

Re: understanding /proc/cpuinfo (in particular "cpu MHz")

The CPU is operating "On Demand" When there is not much load it will throttle down to reduce power usage and heat. When there is a high load on the CPU it will crank up to 2.66. You can force it to a given frequency with emifreq-applet if you want but usually it's better to just let the OS do it as ...

They pepper spray and beat peaceful protesters while at the same time criticising other nations for human rights violations.... Has anyone heard of the Law Congress passed NDAA ? NDAA , SOPA , Patriot Act , TSA , Guantanamo Bay , etc... etc... etc... The only two nations that have it on paper as Law...

For those who participate in Folding@Home I hope you will also concider participating in World Community Grid. They do research in mostly medical sciences. Also it might be a little easer for novice users to deal with because of the Boinc Manager GUI. All you need to do is go to Package Manager and ...

Sorry to hear that.
You really should give Mint 9 a try.
A Very stable and much more mature and fully debuged version.

Re: installtion stuck at "import Documents and settings"

I am not sure but I think you have to actually check the box to make it happen. (Should be a mostly blank white box listing previous installs or other operating systems like Windows or other Linux.) Usually if you just don't check or uncheck anything and just keep clicking continue and take the defa...

Re: Upgrade Mint 11 to 12

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2 Personally I never upgrade , I just save whatever files I want to keep on a jumpdrive or external drive and install the new Mint over the old one. I my opinion it's better to try the new one for a while in virtualbox before you decide to make any change...

Re: installtion stuck at "import Documents and settings"

Just reboot and start again.
And next time don't check the box to import Docs & Settings. :)

Install hung on me 3 times when I tried to cancel downloading language packs.
It doesn't hurt to just start over from the begining.
Just Ctrl + Alt + Del or turn it off and back on.

Re: Which version of Mint are forum users using, and why?

I use Mint 7 Gnome x64 because of many reasons. Mostly because it is rock solid stable and it runs on even the most modern hardware as well as very old hardware equally as well. The only wish I had was for better WiFi support. I like Grub 1 , no uuid , Gnome 2 , the fact this it is surprisingly ligh...

I tried Google but all I seem to get is a bunch of bizarre references to Coffee ;) Can someone tell me what Caribou is in Mint 12 ? I was going thru the startup programs unchecking stuff I don't need, but I have no clue what it is so I don't know if I need it or not.... Edit: oops , I thought I was ...
