Re: Opinions on Linux Distros i've tested.

I'm not sure if those aliases are set by default in Arch itself as I've never used it. I've certainly never encountered them. Maybe they are present in pure Arch by default? .. I'll have a look next time I start one of the VMs.. Might be useful to add them to this once I've installed & configur...

Whatever the board software allows. I'm not sure what it does allow; this varies across sites I suppose, depending on what features the provider offers on their servers. I'm more familiar with VBulletin and have done my time as a Moderator on a popular Forum for several years so know some of the in...

Re: Opinions on Linux Distros i've tested.

How does pacman compare to apt? Pacman is a great utility but I'm afraid I still don't know the true meanings of all the options .. e.g. ""Syyu" .. what does the second "y" accomplish? ...I'm still trying to research the full descriptions of the options. [TL: DR] There is a...

I'm thinking of it being an opt-in feature along the lines of "Show a selection of recent threads from [select] long ago" maybe with a "rotate" option.

a mechanism in place to bring back to attention such threads automatically ... Ideas? This could be achieved if the user can set how far back the rotation range extends i.e. stuff from the past few days/weeks/whatever. Otherwise it will result in hiding newer posts; in itself creating a sort of &qu...

I'd definitely query System76 about this! Maybe they'll offer a battery upgrade?

Re: Opinions on Linux Distros i've tested.

If you want a full featured DE, KDE is still top dog. Its configurability is unmatched. I wholeheartedly agree. I really love the configurability. Not sure if in Cinnamon you can set preferred dimensions & position etc. of not only main but also child windows, individually? Or Wobbly Windows? :...

Re: Over 600 forum users read the following post, but nobody could be of help. Please try again and help!

The problem is often down to threads getting knocked off the first (few) page(s) before someone who knows the solution sees them. It's so easy to miss stuff even when frequently hitting the "Unread Posts" or whatever. Even moreso when what you post seems like a rather trivial observation i...

Re: Any apps needed in Linux?

A way to combine audio sources in software would be great .. so that, for example, one can mix system audio with the microphone input on video calls, without feeding the incoming signal back in & creating a loop. The latter can probably be avoided using separate sinks (which is the easy bit). It...

Re: WiFi won't connect or reconnect after standby

That's a useful resource, I didn't know what the values meant (never had an issue like this on my systems). Thanks for posting the link. I've put the first entry here for easy reference: NetworkManager WiFi Power Saving NetworkManager supports WiFi powersaving but the function is rather undocumented...

Code: Select all

Power Management:on
This could be the issue. I'm no networking guru but what is the output of this command?:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

Re: Cannot switch to virtual consoles

Do you have more than one monitor output i.e. an onboard one & a discrete one? .. it could be sending the TTY to the other output. If so you might be able to disable the unwanted output in BIOS?

Sometimes I fetch with Dogpile.
I've not used that for years! Still any good? Thought it was heading downhill fast at the time, which is why I switched to DDG as that was really starting to improve back then.

But could it be that they do return, but only without logging in? They could have bookmarked their question on the forum and have checked for replies in that way. I'd thought of that possibility, but without being logged in they won't see their notifications, unfortunately. I know this from the odd...

Re: Does using mbr2gpt in Windows work for Linux?

No worries, it successfully worked, with a cost. Delete all the current Linux installation, then use MBR2GPT. Glad it worked. For the record, mainly for future-proofing and flexibility purposes, I've been setting up all my disks as GPT for some time now and only one of those systems is actually ins...

Re: LMDE main focus?

I'm not sure if it's right time, we need to see if Ubuntu will keep symliking apt to snaps other than Chromium and doing other shady stuff behind our back. IMHO in that respect it's too late as they've done that already. This is at least to some extent why the LMDE version is being maintained. I ha...

Re: Get out of a freeze

If the fan is running full-pelt it means the CPU is doing some serious number-crunching. Likely swapping or possibly indexing ( but the latter usually just results in excessive disk-chattering without degrading performance too much, on modern systems). If you aren't in a major hurry, wait until it s...
