Re: Read Only Error

The smart status of my disk using disks utility says "Disk is OK, 263 bad sectors" I don't know why the Disks utility shows "Disk is OK" when quite evidently it is not. I'd keep checking this & see if the count rises. Whilst it should be possible to force reallocation of bad sectors, it's something...

Re: Tyre garages: don't trust them blindly

Just get it done, and get it done quickly so we can get to the next customer, the next task on the list, or whatever. Move. Move. Move! That's exactly how it became after the first couple of years when I was working as a diagnostic tester, setting up & calibrating battery chargers. I started out on...

Re: Tyre garages: don't trust them blindly

Received profuse excuses etc. Oh well. I'd love to know what those were!  In this country tyre fitters are notorious for over-tightening wheel nuts with pneumatic tools. Yes .. and when I scrapped my last car, I wanted my alloys for a future vehicle or for sale & the scrappies took ...

Re: File System Free Space Full, Home Empty?

It's worth checking (& posting) the results of this Terminal command:

Code: Select all

du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
.. as it's not uncommon for old update packages to accumulate.

I haven't heard of Celluloid before. Neither have I. It'll be interesting to see if it handles DVD menus like VLC does; my player of choice is smplayer but use VLC for DVD (and DVD image) playback for the aforementioned reason. Not sure yet if I'll stick with Xfce on the planned server re-install o...

Welcome! I've been to Belgium several times but AFAIK not further south than Brussel/Bruxelles (sp.?) - particularly love Antwerpen (again, sp.?) :D one of my favourite beers hails from there; DeKoninck Bolleke.

SP = obvoiusly depends where you come from!

Re: New questions--making things work in VirtualBox

And if you are going online with these unsupported Windows OSs make sure you have a working and known malware-free snapshot of the VM first to which you can boot if you do get infected. I agree 100% and should have mentioned this in my initial reply. So easily overlooked (by me) as I disable...

Re: [SOLVED] Disabling the shutdown timer - is it really this hard?

You must have switched that on at some point. it's disabled by default out the box with Cinnamon. Maybe it's a system upgraded from older versions or settings have been transferred from an older installation? This might expain it. In any case, the OP was talking about Plasma5 and this still has a 3...

Re: Cell phone transferrs

It might be possible to transfer these using Bluetooth, avoiding a PC connection altogether. I'm faced with a similar issue as need to copy the stuff from my BlackBerry to a newly-acquired (but a few years old) Nokia. Don't know what the Nokia runs & unfortunately I have no practical experience with...

Re: Web browser Firefox not opening

Although I'm no expert on this,  if that pre-Quantum FF works maybe the latest Waterfox will too. I have at time of posting V56.2.9 (needs updating)  . I find it to be more stable than straight Firefox. *EDIT* I see you are running a 32-Bit OS and IIRC those CPUs are 32-Bit only, so Waterfox is unfo...

Re: MATE 19.2 screen keeps freezing/flashing black

When the monitor blanks, try shining a bright light at the screen & see if you can make out anything on the display as this would indicate a failing backlight. Also try a Live ession; I'd expect the same behaviour there in this case.

Re: New questions--making things work in VirtualBox

If I convert the CD to an .iso, where would the virtual optical drive be found? And where would I store the .iso so VB can find it? You can put the .ISO files wherever is convenient & has enough space for them, maybe create a directory such as /home/yourusername/Optical_Disk_Images & then you attac...

Re: New questions--making things work in VirtualBox

For your first question: Most of the Windows 98 games are on CDs. Will I need to do anything else to get them to work? You can add a physical CD/DVD drive in the Virtual Machine settings but if you have enough storage space it will likely be better to make .ISOs of the disks and mount those in the v...

I’m even thinking of dual booting W10 Pro & LM 19.2 XFCE. The SSD is 1 TB so why the heck not?
I can think of a good reason: Windows updates borking your Linux installation! I've read several threads on here and elsewhere reporting such.

Re: VirtualBox Advice

Regarding coming out Win10 and close Virtual Machine, the default seems to be Send the shutdown signal but is it ok to select Save the machine state? That way I don't have to boot up again. Is that like hibernate? Regarding the option to save the machine state, this is akin to "Suspend to Disk" and...

You're very welcome although Murray and Pjotr are the people who really deserve the credit.
It is a good contribution, I will post my thanks to these good people in the other thread. One thing I forgot to mention is that I'm using the latest GIMP 2.10 & it works fine in that. :D
