Re: How To: Use the "Open as Root" Context Menu in Nautilus

In thinking about the file system as the below the surface region on which Linux, or any OS, is built, both Nemo and Nautilus, as underwater explorers, make for a good metaphor! Yes, indeed! That might well have been the idea behind these names & also in KDE we have Dolphin as the file manager, als...

Re: linux mint name change

In any event, the sort of names I might pick for a distro would mostly be either explicit, profane, or both. Zum Beispiel, Enormous ****e******** ****s Linux would probably, in most circumstances, be considered highly inappropriate.  If I were a betting man, I'd wager that many ...

Re: linux mint name change

I'm not sure if Intel owns a mark for just 'core'. A mark can't be merely descriptive. So, Intel couldn't trademark 'processor'. Core might be cutting it a bit close. I did a quick search and it looks like they own 'Intel Core'. But it doesn't look like they disclaimed the use of 'core'. I agree wi...

I'm pleased it's all working now. Bit of a puzzle what caused it though! If by any chance it happens again it will be interesting to investigate, but I doubt it will.

Re: linux mint name change

Linux users will recognize the name 'Mint' by itself. Yes .. but people not familiar with Linux won't know what it is. Many people who have heard of Linux will know about Mint, though. :) Of course you can get a trademark on "Mint". So long as nobody else is using the mark for the same goods or ser...

Cinnamon's File Manager is called Nemo
This .. and it's really not a good idea to install a second full-blown file manager as this can (and apparently has) lead to serious borkage of your operating system.

Re: Adding arrows to screenshots using GIMP

I have edited that file to change the menu text from Dutch to English for anyone else like me whose Dutch is regrettably limited. That is really appreciated, thank you! I'd been looking for something like this & it works nicely. This is on my Manjaro system by the way so it's also good for most if ...

also can't reproduce in a Mint 19.2 Cinnamon live session Neither can I. I do remember it happening on Mint 17.3 Cinnamon (32-Bit, which is what I used for the first month or so) but as far as I recall, it didn't actually lock the screen? test to confirm/disprove your results I tested LM19.2 Cinnam...

Re: Understanding Linux Mint

From memory, VB does this 'out of the box' with the standard NAT network adapter without you having to do anything. That appears to be the case (my Mint VMs for example have no issues connecting to LAN & WAN); I turned off networking for my "Legacy Windows" VMs but just tested WAN connectivity in m...

Try this: du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/ & post the results.

It's quite common for old packages to accumulate filling up /. I think this one might catch quite a few people out ..

Very interesting = will try to collect old the codes used ages ago = and sure will give it a try = thanks
You're welcome. It's just an idea in case there were threads or posts which might still be relevant, but probably not if they are about older versions of Mint. :)

Re: What is your favorite internet search engine and why?

I installed an extension that allows me to select the text and do research with DDG. .... I saw a similar extension also available for Firefox In my case I just added DDG as a search provider (as far as I can recall, anyway) and this option appeared. Very handy. I don't use Chrome so don't know how...

Re: Wine Security

I have 8gb available so hopefully that will be enough. That should be. I'd give a Win7 VM 2-3GB & it should run OK for basic tasks. Win7 was supplied preinstalled on many machines with only 1GB installed. How big a partition should I select to cover me for VirtualBox? I use VHDs (Virtual Hard Drive...

Adding to what Moem said, you did also ask a question about not being able to run these programs properly, so that definitely deserves your own thread. This is something unique to your setup.

As far as recommendations go, I'll also add a vote for Kdenlive.

Re: My elderly Acer Aspire One

My single-core Toshiba NB250 handles YouTube videos pretty well in Linux, using Waterfox but that does have 2GB RAM & tab count is kept low. My now sadly retired Acer D255E handled YT surprisingly well, to the point I could review them without issues before downloading and adding to my collection. W...

A bit late to the party but (why?) wouldn't adding symlinks to those wanted subdirectories work ..? I haven't actually tried this but have thought about putting together a collection of backgrounds & having them change periodically, so would be interested to know if that does work.

if you keep using Windows7 while it is no longer supported you expose yourself to security risks... Very true, but this is where Virtualbox comes to the rescue .. easy to disable internet connectivity. That way it should be safe to keep using after EOS. As for installation media, these are availabl...
