Re: I want to be a linux guru in months

For long and complicated commands look into aliases; I have about 40 or 50 in my .bash_aliases file which make life a lot easier. Good point and something I was going to mention, but I'd add an echo command in to the alias entry, something like this: alias speedtest='echo "wget -O - https://raw.git...

Re: Birthday gift for me

you have to remove the keyboard to get the bottom cover off! This is quite common with some of the more recent machines I've encountered. Annoying and the risk of dinting/damaging/wrecking the keyboard frame in some cases whilst trying to remove it (plus the hassle disconnecting and reconnecting th...

Re: How to protect against Malware on Linux?

How can I be sure that won't get malware when downloading different scripts and apps for my linux system? You can never be completely 100% sure but if you use well known and trusted sources such as the Mint/Ubuntu repos I believe you are highly unlikely to find anything untoward. Let's take this sc...

Re: I want to be a linux guru in months

This thread may help re this: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=311860 Indeed. Althought the title might be a bit misleading there are certainly some good tips in that thread. Worth noting: I was using cat ~/.bash_history | grep [whatever] until I recently discovered the history command. This works on va...

Re: Live USB asking for Login - mint/blank doesn't work

This is something that caught me out when first trying Linux Mint (LM17.3 Cinnamon). Does simply ignoring the prompt lead to automatic login after a timeout period i.e. don't type anything, just leave it?

Re: [Solved] - Impressions - All Linux household after 3 weeks.

Ubuntu changed the directory where sane dll looks for third party drivers That seems like a less than sane decision to me. I wonder what prompted or supposedly justified that change? :? In any case, this (your post and link) is useful as it would likely have tripped me up when setting up my next Mi...

Re: I want to be a linux guru in months

Being a Linux "guru" in months is probably quite ambitious even for those of us who started out in the 8-bit home computer era. Still, with the ambition/determination and with patience, I'm sure this can be achieved, having myself "jumped ship" literally overnight from Windows 7 to Mint a few years ...

Re: Windows Refugee

Welcome! Many of us, I suspect, are refugees from the land of Redmond. I see you have your printers and scanners working which is great; therre are issues with some models not having proper driver support in Linux (yet). In fact connecting my scanner (which had worked before) was what bric...

Re: Corrupt downloads

A shot in the dark .. it may be worth checking/replacing the CMOS backup cell as failing ones can cause strange issues (i.e. not keeping the BIOS settings correctly). It's usually a CR2032 coin cell, located near the BIOS flash chip. These don't tend to last much more than 10 years.

Re: Site of device drivers

Whilst I can't help with your specific issue, I think you are more likely to attract attention of someone who has experience with those printers if you change the title in your opening post in this thread to something like "Canon LBP6200 installed but no print output".

Re: Corrupt downloads

I think those AMD Athlons are 32-bit only (mine is, and it's a similar one to yours). In my case LM17.3 Xfce ran just fine (ran, because I knocked a cap off the motherboard and haven't replaced it yet). EDIT : I didn't read your INXI report properly; seems your CPU is indeed 64-bit capable. What I'd...

Re: Win10 is an abomination

On the other hand, I wouldn't trust M$ Windows 10 wirh my personal and financial data either. They "own" the rights to everything on their systems. Less "exposed" maybe with regards to the Internet but still not private IMHO.

Re: Just switched from Windows - Multiple questions

Regarding the initial exclamation mark it seems it is ignored ... unless you put three of them and then they do take precedence. Weird. This depends on the file manager. For example, if I recall correctly, those YouTube videos I downloaded some time ago whose filenames are preceded with ▶ (probably...

Re: Incorrect text display

You're welcome. As for Terminal, I use it all the time but it's entirely up to you if/when you want to explore it. I (along with a number of others on here) just find it easier to post Terminal commands for stuff like this plus I'm not sure which desktop environment you are using, hence my guess at ...

Re: When will this forum site get a new modern design?

I quite like this forum. It's easy to read, easy to navigate Exactly. Another thing .. it's not a "load-on-demand" (LOD) site such as the likes of Reddit, the Manjaro Forum etc., I find those LOD sites hard to navigate and also they can not be pre-loaded for offline reading later. This severely inh...

Re: Incorrect text display

Is this reversible in case I screw things up further? It is, if you need to, as long as you make a backup of the file you are replacing before you copy the new one there. I tend to make a backup of such files by copying it to e.g. fonts.conf.old (in the same directory) so if things go awry, you can...

Re: Win10 is an abomination

windows SSD is setup as RAID Makes me wonder why they do this. Seriously, what is the point of setting up a RAID-based system with only one storage unit .. and often, the machines can only accommodate one disk ..? If it isn't a multi-disk system it is not true RAID, same as a single cell isn't a ba...

Re: Incorrect text display

I suppose it's worth a shot copying the fonts.conf file from the new account to the original one & taking ownership of it there with sudo chown $USER:$USER ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf from within the original account, to see if that fixes it.

Re: Win10 is an abomination

I find it's like keeping budgies and the house cat in the same cage.  True enough by many accounts .. although as for your last line I'd say Windows 10 is operated and mis managed from Redmond. The machine I'm using now came with Windows 10 which I only booted to make sure the ...
