Re: I am really trying to back up and upgrade to Mint 18. Nothing works properly
I encountered a similar issue but thanks to slipstick I now know there are other directories I should have excluded (/mnt was obvious! I'm making the backup to the separate data (fileserver) partition .. ntfs formatted, hope this won't screw up the permissions if I use an archive). I'll try again as...

Re: FAT32 worth keeping?
On a similar principle I formatted the data partition on the machine I'm using as a fileserver & media centre in NTFS so that I could ensure accessibility from a Windows OS - not sure if VirtualBox would get round it anyway but it works well for me and my mate's Windows tablet can access the sha...

Re: Command line: Displaying output one screen at a time
Thanks for all the replies. I should have said "a parameter with the same effect as the /p switch when reading a directory in DOS". I've been reading rather a lot about Linux in general over the couple of months I've been using it but had forgotten about more etc.. In time there's a chance...

Re: FAT32 worth keeping?
It's easy enough to write a Linux ISO to a USB stick in Linux Mint so you might as well experiment with them. Maybe make one a persistent install? Or perhaps the .bat file can be re-written as a shell script.

Command line: Displaying output one screen at a time [SOLVED]
I've searched around but haven't been able to find anything, probably my search terms so please excuse me if it's already been covered; being new to Linux I thought it appropriate I ask in this section but mods please feel free to move it. Basically I'm looking for an equivalent to the MS-DOS /p com...

Re: One more reason to avoid Windows 10
The only way to guarantee avoidance of Win10 if you are running Win7 is to block all WAN access on Windows. Just let it see the IPs of other computers on your network (or the range of IPs if you're using DHCP which is often the case) and use Linux for all your Web access, which is what I'm doing now...

Re: UK Date Format for Panel Clock
.. already been set for 'London Europe/London' but this doesn't affect the date format which still shows today as '19:26 Sun May 23' when I would prefer '19:26 Sun 23 May' .. I see what you mean, sorry I didn't quite interpret your first post correctly! Yes, that is rather a nuisance. I think file ...

Re: Don't Leave your Windows Open ...
That's excellent. The threat of this has been the main reason I switched to Mint. I haven't had to swear at the computers since the switch and when the Win7 hard-drives are used I'll be very careful what updates get installed, will probably just use Win7 offline for PC repairs (have paid-for softwar...

Re: UK Date Format for Panel Clock
If it's any help the format I use is:
%A %e %B %Y %H:%M:%S
example:
Saturday 21 May 2016 23:00:16
Easy to set in Cinnamon but afraid I can't help with your version. Does it have an applet with a custom date option?

Re: Hello from another Linux convert!
Thanks for all the replies; unfortunately my idiocy has struck once again and, having changed a setting in Firefox whilst still composting this post, have lost all the text. Again. D'oh The basics of it are that references to the Windows Registry make me cringe these days with how stupidly complex (...

Re: Hello from another Linux convert!
Thanks for all the comments! Hope I'll be able to contribute something useful in due course. I've also found older Toshiba laptops to work great with most Linux distro' I've tried, along with IBM/Lenovo's, and even really old Dells with 256mb's of ram can become useable ... Nice to know the old IBM ...

Hello from another Linux convert!
A month or so ago, whilst battling with a Linx tablet on which I'd deleted the recovery partition and looking to make a custom recovery medium for it I decided to try downloading Linux Mint, putting it on a USB stick and see if I could get it to boot from that. Once I did there was no turning back, ...

Re: Install Mint with 32bit UEFI
The issue with some of these devices is that they appear to require a GPT disk with NTFS partition for the OS. In the case of the tablets (BayTrail) an option for CSM does appear but I've not been successful so far in getting it to boot in this mode. These also refuse to boot from a DVD. Live USB Mi...

Re: Install Mint with 32bit UEFI
I've been researching this for the past week or so (am new to Linux) having been trying to repair a Linx 7 tablet and have found that a GPT-formatted USB with a 64-bit Mint 17.3 distro will boot (via GRUB) on UEFI once you've copied "bootia32.efi" to the EFI/Boot directory. 32-bit will boo...
