Re: Win10 is an abomination

On the other hand, I wouldn't trust M$ Windows 10 wirh my personal and financial data either. They "own" the rights to everything on their systems. Less "exposed" maybe with regards to the Internet but still not private IMHO.

Re: Just switched from Windows - Multiple questions

Regarding the initial exclamation mark it seems it is ignored ... unless you put three of them and then they do take precedence. Weird. This depends on the file manager. For example, if I recall correctly, those YouTube videos I downloaded some time ago whose filenames are preceded with ▶ (probably...

Re: Incorrect text display

You're welcome. As for Terminal, I use it all the time but it's entirely up to you if/when you want to explore it. I (along with a number of others on here) just find it easier to post Terminal commands for stuff like this plus I'm not sure which desktop environment you are using, hence my guess at ...

Re: When will this forum site get a new modern design?

I quite like this forum. It's easy to read, easy to navigate Exactly. Another thing .. it's not a "load-on-demand" (LOD) site such as the likes of Reddit, the Manjaro Forum etc., I find those LOD sites hard to navigate and also they can not be pre-loaded for offline reading later. This severely inh...

Re: Incorrect text display

Is this reversible in case I screw things up further? It is, if you need to, as long as you make a backup of the file you are replacing before you copy the new one there. I tend to make a backup of such files by copying it to e.g. fonts.conf.old (in the same directory) so if things go awry, you can...

Re: Win10 is an abomination

windows SSD is setup as RAID Makes me wonder why they do this. Seriously, what is the point of setting up a RAID-based system with only one storage unit .. and often, the machines can only accommodate one disk ..? If it isn't a multi-disk system it is not true RAID, same as a single cell isn't a ba...

Re: Incorrect text display

I suppose it's worth a shot copying the fonts.conf file from the new account to the original one & taking ownership of it there with sudo chown $USER:$USER ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf from within the original account, to see if that fixes it.

I find it's like keeping budgies and the house cat in the same cage.  True enough by many accounts .. although as for your last line I'd say Windows 10 is operated and mis managed from Redmond. The machine I'm using now came with Windows 10 which I only booted to make sure the ...

Re: Moving GRUB to second Mint install

As a general rule the latest-installed OS will take over control of GRUB. If you install an additional Linux OS on the system you'll need to repeat Flemur's instructions from within the OS you wish to have control, if it's not the last to be installed. Hope this helps!

Re: Unable To Mount Location

I'd also like to add that sudo is not necessary with nano etc. for viewing these system files unless you do intend to edit them. They will open as non-writeable, avoiding the chance of an accidental edit.

Tip: There are easier ways to list such file contents as well e.g. cat /etc/fstab. :D

in case this is of any help.

Re: When will this forum site get a new modern design?

This is why I suggest we don't go one way or the other. Let's do both! If and when there ever is a design revamp, why not just provide options? Either you can stick with the current design or you can choose the new modern design. It's that simple...everyone gets to use what they prefer. I agree wit...

Re: How can I get my display scale below 1 (100%)?

For scaling you could look in to "newrez" which I was using on my D255E to make its 1024x600 display more practically useable. The results were quite good considering the physical limitations. As for xrandr; great tool for managing displays & this is how I've gotten round issues with bad cables etc....

Re: GPS Spoofing at Chinese Ports

This is interesting. Not seen anything to suggest it happens here but when I was driving towards Newcastle some years ago, the satnav lost its bearings for a substantial distance in the vicinity of a power station. This was on the M1 northbound, or possibly the M18 .. it's been a while. "Turn around...

Re: Struggling to install a workable Mint and partition properly - help!

These machines are indeed hobbled at 2GB maximum RAM, apparently at bequest of M$. I've tried a few 4GB modules and no POST let alone boot. This is despite the INXI report showing otherwise. I have a D255E, the one with the N570 CPU @ 2x1.66GHz and this runs Mint 17.3 KDE 32-bit well and Manjaro KDE...

Re: Web hosting and domain registration

So, if you use a UK credit card I believe you would have to pay UK VAT even when buying goods and services outside the UK. I'm unsure about that. I do know that when in e.g. Italy I paid the local taxes not the UK VAT & this seems to be the case if I use a UK card to buy goods or pay for services f...

Re: That's it, I'm done. Need advice.

My company has brought in an outside company to do the jobs my team and I do, and they are slowly gobbling up sections of our company that we operate in. This is very unfortunate news, especially in the lead-up to the festive season - it's bad enough any time but I got laid off just before Christma...
