Re: The Sound on My Computer Keeps Crapping Out Again

After redownloading the video, the sound is working within it as well. This is sometimes the case. I assume you had enough room on the target medium for the conversion to take place? .. I've had a few occasions where there wasn't sufficient space available for the conversion/combination process to ...

Code: Select all

cd /var/cache/apt/archives/ && pwd | sudo du -h
Post the output. Maybe your APT cache is getting full.

Re: Back to Linux after 10 years of macos, happy to start again with Mint

Escaping that "walled garden" experience is definitely a good thing. The other day my mate invited me to explore his Mac system & I wasn't all that impressed .. zsh and all that & none of the familiar commands I tried were recognized. He had to add those.

Re: Long time lurker, new to the boards

There have been a good few people signing up here recently as long-time Mint users with no issues to have to ask things about, the information (if any) needed already being easy enough to find, which is a good sign! I know there are many who do use Mint (or other distros, such as myself) but who the...

Welcome to the Forum! I'm glad your son suggested Linux as a good alternative to the mess of going to LoseDoze™ 10*

Thanks for that info, mshmm. I don't recall LMF being out for any (significant) time when we had the issue with the ISOs a couple of years or so ago.

[SOLVED] Manjaro Forums read-only at present .. is it just me?

I don't visit those Forums very often but did just now to look for a solution for my trackpad issue (not working after resume from suspend). Found a clue pointing me in the right direction, but can't even bookmark the page on-site (my browser bookmark DB is a mess & needs sorting at some point t...

Re: How Tech Addiction Helps Degrade Society

I'll have to fix one of my old bikes. Had a really nice one but it was stolen before I got a chance to ride it. :( I don't see the point of those exercise bikes unless they actually generate useful energy .. don't know if any do or if they just burn it off, creating more CO²? There is a Mens' Shed a...

Re: LM19.3 default behaviour .. SSH: Logout clears entire terminal window?! ☹

clear_console shouldn't do anything in a regular terminal emulator - it's for TTY's Odd. It cleared mine, so I commented those lines out & it didn't do it from then. I wouldn't think it makes any difference but this was from my Manjaro installation. As you can imagine, it was a bit of a surpris...

Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing"

I have 2 GB of ram as recommended by the system requirements page. 2GB is the minimum recommended. But, from your inxi report, you appear to have 4GB: Info: Processes: 160 Uptime: 40m Memory: 3.75 GiB used: 1.12 GiB (30.0%) Init: systemd v: 237 runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 7.5.0 alt: 7 Client: Unkno...

Re: Birthday gift for me [System 76 Darter Pro]

I was discussing this situation wih my mate earlier (a Linux afficionado, like me*) and we basically agreed this was a "manufacturer lock-in" scenario. I think the only hope is compiling from source (assuming they do actually provide the source code) to effectively use another distro e.g. ...

LM19.3 default behaviour .. SSH: Logout clears entire terminal window?! ☹

This is unexpected and quite frankly not good to implement without a tip=off of some sort. When working on a system remotely, one does not expect acquired data in your Terminal window(s) to be immediately and irrevocably removed without warning upon logout, inckuding eveything you were working on pr...

Re: Stuttering Sound

at least with Cinnamon, I've seen issues caused by CPU monitoring desklets or whatever they're called Confirmed. I've seen these things drag the system to a crawl and ramp up the CPU temps. I uninstalled the offending program and now exclusively rely on Terminal command sensors . I can't exactly re...

Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing"

How much RAM do you have? It could be swapping. Or indexing, but I'd expect that to start straight away and ease off over time.

Re: Lost windows 10/mint 19.3

Think you'd need to enable UEFI + CSM for that to work. Your Mint (from the report) is installed on a MBR disk whereas both others are GPT. AFAIK you can't install or run Mint in UEFI mode on an MBR disk.

Re: Can I still use 17.3?

As this has turned out to be a mammoth thread, all I'd suggest is to clone the current disk and then attempt an upgrade to 18, then 19 and maybe 20 on the clone. That way there's nothing to lose. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then save all your configs/settings/whatever you want from your /home...
