Re: My elderly Acer Aspire One

Sadly the trackpad decided to go missing Perhaps the little ribbon isn't seated properly - this and the bigger one for the keyboard are a bit of a PITA to fit .. I should know .. It could be that support was dropped with the later kernels. That was the case with the Toshiba NB305; had to sti...

Re: Help is on the way maybe!

For useful commands, I simply redirect the manpage to a text file. Same for help pages. That way, they can be read with whatever application you choose e.g. Kate in my case, which has an excellent navigation sidebar. No need for an internet connection either. :) man program > /path/to/desired/direct...

Re: Seeking more capable system dialogs.

Kubuntu doesn't receive the latest Plasma5 updates as Neon User Edition but is more like Neon User Edition LTS as they depend on the LTS version of Plasma5 I've read in several places that installing Kubuntu & then adding the Neon repos is the way round this. Might still have a Kubuntu VM around, w...

Re: VirtualBox 6 isn't starting

What happens if you create a new virtual machine? If that starts up, e.g. with the Win10 ISO attached, you could try attaching the Win10 virtual hard disk to this & see what happens ... assuming you haven't already tried this of course. The RAM allocation shouldn't be an issue; 4GB is plenty for a W...

Re: Computer monitor for Linux

Unless I'm mistaken, hot keys won't work on an external monitor. You'll need to use the settings on the monitor itself to do that, unless you wish to use something like Redshift to do that, which I believe is pre-installed on later versions of Linux Mint. This program won't affect the backlight sett...

Re: Forum postings and public domain

As far as I'm concerned, anything I post here may be freely read, linked to, copied/quoted in part or in full etc. (or deleted, for that matter ) otherwise it sort of defeats the object of participating on this (or any) Forum. I wouldn't consider it as giving up any rights; in fact, I regard i...

a few days ago they started using this dark theme
Isn't that optional? I've been using it for quite a while (from when it became available, I think) but sure I had to choose it in settings.

Re: Seeking more capable system dialogs.

I think that's not a distro I would class it as one, but this is what they have to say about it: Is it a distro? 🔗 Not quite, it's a package archive with the latest KDE software on top of a stable base. While we have installable images, unlike full Linux distributions we're only interested in KDE s...

Welcome to the Forum! :D When I first started the transition, I kept a VM around in order to boot into Windows if necessary for those programs, especially the embroidery programs as that's far more niche then even Adobe. Thankfully, for my use case, I was able to switch over full time to Linux. That...

+1, but note it does take a little setting-up a.k.a. allowing "trusted" scripts for the various sites you use, especially at first. It should work, though.

Re: How to stop web page redirecting

I found this on the Mozilla Support forum : This is a feature called "Domain Guessing", described here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/search-web-address-bar#w_domain-guessing You can turn it off by setting browser.fixup.alternate.enabled to false in about:config. Maybe this will help? .. It I...

Have you also checked the interior for accumulated dust? +1. Also, I'd strongly advise replacing the thermal transfer compound between the CPU (and GPU, if discrete) & heatpipe assembly .. or get someone to do it for you if you don't feel confident. It's likely baked hard, especially as it's been t...

Re: Laptop won't enter standby

I've had this happen on a few occasions. Seems there was some process running which prevented the machine from going into standby or hibernating successfully. A couple of times recently, I've had to repeat the "Suspend" request (once) for it to go to sleep. Lid close, BTW, is set to turn off the dis...

Re: Are You Killing Your SSD with Dual Boot ?

Levelling algorithms are a function of the SSD and have nothing to do with the OS or the underlying file system This is reassuring and pretty much my conclusion from what I've read so far. Means not having to alter my current partition schemes when I eventually migrate to SSDs. One question remains...
